This design uses the square knot the whole way. The knots wrap around strategically placed beads.

The jewelry in this tutorial has a medium skill level. Once you have mastered it, try this flower bracelet for more of a challenge.

Ways to secure hemp jewelry while you’re making them

To get really good results, you want to make sure that the bracelet is secure while you’re creating the knots. Here are a few ideas for securing your string.

  • Use a binder clip to secure it to a flat surface.
  • Place a pillow on your lap and safety pin the floss to the pillow.
  • Clip the hemp onto a clipboard.
  • Use masking tape to secure it to your work surface.

Square Knot Hemp Bracelet with Beads

Hemp square knot bracelet

Create a hemp bracelet with beads using a simple square knot design. We breifly go over the a square knot in the tutorial, but if you aren't familiar and need more instruction head to the full square knot tutorial.

Active Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Difficulty Easy

Materials

  • Thin Hemp - 12" for center string
  • Knotting Hemp - 8x of wrist + a few inches. (8x+)
  • Beads
  • Button

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Clipboard or Safety Pin to hold your project while working.

Instructions

  1. Take the knotting hemp and fold it in half leaving a loop at the top. Tie off with the center string. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  2. Make sure the loop is big enough for the button to slide through. Adjust now if needed. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  3. Put all of the beads onto the center string. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  4. Tie off the center string so they don't fall off while you're working. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  5. Using the knotting hemp, start creating square knots. Take the left string under the center and over the string on the right. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  6. Take the string on the right, up and through the loop created on the left. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  7. Pull the side strings while holding the center string in place. work the knot to the top of the center string. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  8. To complete the square knot, take the string on the right under the center then over the string on the left.
    Then pull the left string through the loop on the right.

  9. Once you have created a few square knots, slide up the first bead. When making the first knot after the bead, make sure to pull the side strings tight to help hold the bead in place. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  10. Continue making square knots and beads, make sure to keep the number of knots between each bead even if you want to create a center for your design. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  11. Check the length of your bracelet, and make sure to leave space for the button. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  12. When you are happy with the length, slide the button on the center string and pull all 3 strings together. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet
  13. Tie off the 3 strings and pull the knot as close to your button as needed. Pull the knot nice and tight. In process image of a Hemp square knot bracelet

Notes

You will have extra hemp when you are finished. I like to have enough to manuver my knots. Once you get your bracelet size down you can adjust the length of hemp you use to your preference.

It uses simple supplies, so you can let your child buy them with chore money or you can let them raid your stash.

You can use as many colors as you want in this art project! Our tutorial uses 4 colors plus the white yarn. Try mixing funky colors, like hot pinks with dark blues, for a unique look.

Tips for creating this wall hanging

These tips will help you create a masterpiece!

  • Make sure to work while your glue is still wet to get your pieces of yarn as snug as possible!
  • When pulling your needles out of your dry design, twist slightly and hold your yarn in place.
  • Always cut your yarn with a bit extra at the ends. It’s easier to trip later than add more.
  • Keep a damp paper towel close by to wipe glue off your fingers.

Create this fun DIY yarn wall art to display or give as a gift!

Materials

  • Yarn - Multiple Colors. I used cream, blue, purple, pink, and yellow.
  • Canvas. I worked on an 8x10.

Tools

  • White School Glue
  • Sewing Pins
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Start by laying out the first piece of yarn. Create a wavy line going diagonally corner to corner. Pin down the yarn while working on your shape. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  2. Slowly glue the yarn into place by gluing a small portion at a time. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  3. Add a line of glue along the edge of the first piece of yarn. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  4. Start laying the second row of yarn. Use pins anywhere you need to hold the yarn into place. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  5. Next, lay the first color. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  6. Go back with your pins and nudge the yarn as close as you can to the yarn placed before it. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  7. Pin in the arches to hold it in place. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  8. Repeat the process with multiple colors. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  9. When the yarn can no longer follow the original curve lay it down across the whole design. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  10. Then go back and adjust so you can get it as tight as possible. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  11. If you can't get 2 pieces of yarn into the space, cut a single strand. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  12. Use the back end of the pin to press it down. Then pin the arch to the end of the single string. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  13. To replicate this design, work towards a center color and then back to the first color. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  14. Then fill in the extra space with the cream (base color) yarn. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  15. Repeat the same pattern on the opposite side of the original first curve. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  16. Fill in all remaining canvas with your base color string. SET ASIDE TO DRY. In process image of yarn canvas art.
  17. ONCE DRY. Remove all of your pins. Then start working one side at a time, lift the yarn that is over the edge, and glue it to the edges In process image of yarn canvas art.

We have been making a ton of friendship bracelets lately. This wrapped cord takes the concepts of thread bracelets and takes them to another level.

The spiral design uses a forward knot to create a string of twists that look kind of like spiral staircases. This is why the technique is sometimes called the Chinese staircase pattern.

You can use this embroidery craft in several ways.

  • Give them to your best friend.
  • Use different colors to label all the tablet and phone cords in your home.
  • Make them at a sleepover.

  • Wrap extension cords when they are visible.

You can use 1 color to decorate this phone cord. In our example, we used a color-shifting type of embroidery thread to give it a gradual color change.

Ways to secure cords while you’re making them.

To get really good results, you want to make sure that everything is secure while you’re creating the knots. Here are a few ideas for securing your thread.

  • Use a binder clip to secure it to a flat surface.
  • Clip the string onto a clipboard.
  • Use masking tape to secure it to your work surface.

To create this look you should be familiar with the forward knot.

If you are not comfortable with this technique, head over to our basic friendship bracelet knots tutorials. There you will learn 5 of the basic string knots including the backward knot and square knots.

Phone Cord Wrap

Personalize your phone charger with this fun forward knot tutorial! Just like a Chinese ladder design you get a fun spiral decoration on your charging cord!

Materials

  • Phone Cord
  • Embroidery Thread. I used 2 for my 3' phone cord. I also chose an ombre style strings so that the color shifts through the design.

Tools

  • Tape
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Attach a phone cord to your work surface. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  2. Tie one end of the embroidery string to your charger. Keep the string in the packaging so it doesn't get too messy. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  3. Slide the knot as far up the cord as you can. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  4. Create a forward knot with the short end of the knot held tight against the charger cord. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  5. To create your forward knot take the long string and go over the phone cord, creating a number 4, then go under the phone cord and up through the loop created by the 4. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  6. Pull tight (make sure you have that tail from step 4 in there). In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  7. Then slide the knot up. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  8. Trim the extra end a bit shorter and then complete a few more forward knots, carefully so the end stays inside the design. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  9. Now just repeat! In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  10. As you work down the cord, the knotting string will naturally work its way under the center string (cord). Just pass it back under to the left side and continue making forward knots. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  11. If the phone charger is long, you may need to thread in more embroidery thread. To do this add a new thread along the phone cord. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  12. Create a few forward knots with the new string inside the knot with the phone cord. Be careful not to pull down until you have a few knots in place. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  13. Then swap strings. Putting the old string into the center with the phone cord and using your new string to create the knots. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  14. Just like in the beginning you can trim off this end. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  15. Carefully do the next few knots so that you hide that end inside completely. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap
  16. Then just keep knotting! Work your way all the way to the other end of your charging cord. In process image of a diy phone cord wrap

  • Cardstock - White and Blues
  • Contact Paper
  • Picture or Drawing (see step 1)
  • Tape

Tools

  • Hole Punch
  • Scissors
  • Circle Template (lid, glass, anything circle!)
  • Paint Pen or Marker
  • Pen
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. You will need to have a photograph or a drawing to place "in" your snow globe. Tilting their head back and arms out looks great! Just like they are going to catch the falling snow. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.
  2. Roll out some contact paper and cut a piece that is wide enough to fit the circle template. Make sure the circle template is big enough to cover the picture with space around it. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.
  3. Fold the contact paper in half and then trace a circle. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.
  4. Cut out the circle. This should leave you with 2 identical contact paper circles. Set aside until later. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.

  6. Start punching holes out of the blue papers. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.
  7. Peel the backing off one of the contact paper circles. Attach the circle, sticky side up, to your work surface with tape. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.

  11. When you have as much snow as you want carefully remove the tape. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.
  12. Peel the backing off the second contact paper circle and carefully place it sticky side down over the first circle. In process image of a paper snow globe craft.

This necklace design uses the square knot the whole way, which wrap around strategically placed beads.

The jewelry in this tutorial has a medium skill level. Once you have mastered it, try this flower bracelet for more of a challenge.

Ways to secure hemp jewelry while you’re making them

To get really good results, you want to make sure that the bracelet is secure while you’re creating the knots. Here are a few ideas for securing your string.

  • Use a binder clip to secure it to a flat surface.
  • Place a pillow on your lap and safety pin the floss to the pillow.
  • Clip the hemp onto a clipboard.
  • Use masking tape to secure it to your work surface.

Hemp Necklace with Beads

Using hemp and square knots you can make cool hemp choker or necklace!

Active Time 45 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Materials

  • Hemp 8 times the length of your neck plus a few inches for ends. (8x+)
  • Thin hemp the length of your neck plus 6 inches for ends. (1x+)
  • Beads - As many as you like.
  • Button

Tools

  • Something to secure your hemp while working. Clip board, safety pin, etc
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Measure out your hemp. You will have knotting hemp (8x+ the size of your neck) and your center hemp. (1x+ the size of your neck). Fold your knotting hemp in half. Leave an open loop then tie off with the center string. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  2. Make sure the button fits through the open loop. Adjust now if necessary. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  3. Before clipping down, hold the hemp up to your neck. Place the loop in the nape of your neck and pinch where the center (front) of your design will be. Secure the hemp down to your work surface and take note of where the front center of your design will land. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  4. Place your beads on the center string now. Then tie off the end so they don't slip off. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  5. Play around with what your spacing will look like so you know how much space you need to fill with knots before your first bead. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  6. Now start a square knot. Take the left string under the center and over the string on the right. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  7. Take the right string up across the center and through the loop created on the left. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  8. Pull both knotting strings slowly to close the knot. Keep the center string tight while sliding the knot up. In process image of a hemp choker necklace

  14. When adding the knot after the bead, make sure to pull and tug the knot so that the hemp on either side of the bead is as tight as possible. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  15. Do at least one full square knot before adding the second bead. In process image of a hemp choker necklace

  17. Then 2 more square knots and then the center bead. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  18. Repeat the spacing you decided upon to work your way past the center of your hemp necklace so the sides match. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  19. Keep adding on square knots folding in half occasionally until the necklace is symmetrical (or close). You could count knots to be exact, but I find that unnecessary. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
  20. Slide the button on the center string. Give it a quick fitting to see how loose or tight to make the button on the back. This is important if you want that choker-style necklace. In process image of a hemp choker necklace
