Paper Quilling Sun Craft

Print

Learn basic paper quilling with this fun sun craft!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Active Time 10 minutes

Total Time 15 minutes

Difficulty Medium

Materials

• Paper - Yellow, Orange, & Blue.
• White Glue

Tools

• Paper Cutter
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Craft Sticks
• Pallet

Instructions

1. Cut most of the orange and yellow paper into 1" paper strips.
2. Leave about 4" to cut into triangles. You will want at least 6 triangles between the 2 colors.
3. Take one paper strip and glue the ends together to create a circle shape.
4. Place the circle on the background sheet of paper (in this case blue). Mark just inside of the circle with your pencil.
5. Start placing the triangles on the blue paper, covering the pencil marks.
6. Continue placing the triangles all the way around the circle lines.
7. Create a ring of glue then place the circle strip in the glue ring. Give it a little wiggle so that the glue is along the edges.
8. Now we start our quilling! Grab a craft stick and strip of paper. Line one end of the paper strip along the side of the craft stick and pinch. Slowly roll the paper strip over the craft stick holding it tight.
9. Continue wrapping the paper strip around the craft stick until the whole strip is wrapped around.
10. Slide the strip off and pinch the edges flat.
11. Dunk the rolled paper into the white glue and place it within the circle section of your sun.
12. Continue alternating between orange and yellow paper strips.
13. You can add as many quilled strips as you like until you are happy with your finished sun!

Rising Sun Craft

Create the fun paper sun and when you are done you can have it rise and set!

Active Time 10 minutes

Materials

• Yellow and Orange Construction Paper
• Cardboard Circle
• Cardboard Tube
• Yarn
• 2 Pony Beads

Tools

• Glue Stick
• Scissors
• Hole Punch

Instructions

1. Stack the orange and yellow paper. Place your cardboard on top of the paper stack and trace a circle.
2. Fold the paper in half.
3. Cut out the circle. This should give you 4 even circles, 2 of each color.
4. Using the rest of your folded paper cut out 2 triangle shapes. This will give you 8 total triangles, 4 yellow and 4 orange.
5. Add glue to the cardboard circle and attach the triangles around the edge.
6. Add more glue and glue one of the yellow circles onto the cardboard. This should cover the glued edges of the triangles.
7. Fold the rest of the circles in half, like a taco shell.
8. Stack the folded circles orange, yellow, orange with glue in between each layer.
9. Now glue the outer orange edges to the center of the sun.
10. Open to get a 3D center.
11. Cut a paper tube to be shorter than the width of the sun. Punch 4 holes in the cardboard tube. 2 on each side lined up with each other.
12. Tie a bead onto one end of a piece of yarn. Double the knot so it will not come undone.
13. Take the other end of the string and go up through both holes, across the top and back down the other two holes. Add a bead to the second end.
14. Glue the tube to the back of the sun.
15. Tape the center of the yarn to the wall and grab the 2 beads.
16. As they pull apart string, the sun will rise.
17. And Rise!! They can release or bring the hands back together for it to come down.

Materials

• Cardboard
• Yellow Construction Paper
• 6 Pipe Cleaners - I mixed yellow and orange.

Tools

• Hole Punch
• Scissors
• Black Marker
• Glue Stick
• Tape

Instructions

1. Cut a circle out of cardboard.
2. Glue your circle onto a piece of yellow construction paper.
3. Cut around the cardboard. You will now have a yellow paper-covered cardboard circle.
4. Use a hole punch to create 6 holes. To ensure even spacing, punch your first hole. Then punch a hole across from the first hole. Then place 2 punches in between the first and second holes. Repeat on the other side.
5. Draw on a happy sun face or decorate any way you like!
6. Fold each of your pipe cleaners in half. The easiest way to do this is to match up the ends and then pinch in the middle.
7. Put each side of your pipe cleaner into holes that are next to each other on the sun.
8. If you are using 2 colors of pipe cleaners alternate the color of your sun rays.
9. Once you have 2 rays added, flip it over and secure the X they create on the back with tape.
10. Continue your way around the sun adding your rays and securing with tape.
11. When you add your last ray in you should have 2 X on the back to finish up.
12. Flip over and it's complete!

3D Hanging Sun

Print

Using simple shapes create a fun 3D sun to hang!

Active Time 20 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• 3 Sheets Yellow Construction Paper
• 3 Sheets Orange Construction Paper
• Yarn or String

Tools

• A Circle Shape to Trace
• Pencil
• Glue Stick
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Fold each sheet of paper in half. Then trace a circle onto one side of your paper.
2. Draw a triangle on the other side of the paper. Make sure to have the opening at the bottom of the paper.
3. Fold 2 more sheets of construction paper and add underneath. Then cut out the circles and triangles. Repeat with the second set of paper.
4. This should leave you with 12 circles and 12 triangles. Fold one circle in half like a taco shell. Then add glue.
5. Place the opposite color on top and fold to match the taco shape.
6. Continue the pattern until you have used half, 6, of your circles.
7. Then repeat. So you have 2 taco stacks.
8. Place one stack to the side. Open one stack so the inside is facing up. Add in 4 triangles. One in each direction.
9. Then place 4 more triangles, in the opposite color in between each.
10. Place your string using glue.
11. Then, using the matching triangle pieces, cover the string with glue and 2 triangles to secure in place.
12. Now take your second stack of tacos to finish your sun.
13. Fan it out and attach it with glue.
14. Lift and fluff the backside of your sun before hanging.

Supplies for Giant Paper Sunflowers

• Construction Paper, Yellow
• Pipe Cleaners, Green and Brown
• Hole Punch
• Scissors
• Paper Cutter

How to make these construction paper sunflowers for kids

Cut yellow construction paper into strips using a paper cutter. Make the paper strips in different widths. 

We cut few 0.75 inches wide and some 0.5 inches wide. It’s important that the paper strips are wide enough to punch a hole using paper puncher. 

Pick some paper strips that are the same width, stack, and align them. Punch holes on both sides.

Take a brown pipe cleaner, fold 1/3, and flatten a little piece to create a stopper for the paper strips.

Pick one of the wider paper strips, fold to connect the ends, and slide the pipe cleaner through both holes. Repeat with other paper strips. Note: we are adding paper strips on the longer part of the pipe cleaner.

For the center of the sunflower, we want petals to be a bit shorter. If needed, shorten a few strips with scissors and punch holes again. Thread on the pipe cleaner, the same way we did with wide and long yellow strips before. 

When you add all the paper strips, use a brown pipe cleaner to create the center of the sunflower. Coil it into a circle while pressing the center.

Flip your sunflower over to add and secure a green pipe cleaner on the back. This will be the stem. 

Arrange petals a bit if needed. And, you are finished. You have made a lovely giant paper sunflower! Pretty, isn’t it?

Fairy Garden For Kids

Do you have a water table in your back yard? Does it tend to become the disgusting mess of a toy after every rain? Don’t get me wrong… we have some fond water table memories, but ours just ended up looking dirty and disgusting more often than not. So this year we decided to give it a facelift!

This fairy garden is the perfect springtime activity for kids of all ages!

How we created our fairy garden for kids

We started by drilling extra drainage holes all along the bottom of the water table. Next, we filled it with potting soil. I let V pick out a few smaller plants and a couple of packs of seeds to put in her garden. We watered and watched those little seeds for days. The height of the table is perfect for her to work at. The excitement when she saw them pop up was priceless. We continued to add to our garden one thing at a time. We covered some of the edges and plastics with little stones.Later, we found our perfect fairy house with adorable stepping stones.

This table has brought so much joy to my daughter. It just keeps getting better and better! Some of our plants haven’t lasted the test of time, but we have added more. Between watering, checking the growth, pulling weeds, and picking flowers it is the perfect addition to our backyard.

We have had our fine motor butterflies hanging in the window for quite some time now. I took it off to do some cleaning and realized the window side of the spots had faded quite a bit. Which gave me an idea.  Sun Faded Art.

How to make construction paper crafts that have been faded in the sun:

Let your little one have some scissor practice and cut the construction paper into strips and pieces. Any shape will do! Then have them glue the pieces down onto another piece of paper. Next, cut out your letters and as many hearts as you would like from our free printable template. Using painter’s tape, attach the shapes to your construction paper. Make sure to get them as flat as possible. Then take your picture outside and lay it in the sun!  If you need to attach it to something so it doesn’t blow away make sure to use painter’s tape. This way you can remove it without ruining your project.
On a bright and sunny day, it will only take a couple of hours to fade the paper. If it is overcast, it can take a bit longer. Just peek at it from time to time to make sure it’s not lying in the shade. Once it is finished, carefully remove your hearts and letters to reveal your sun-faded art! You can do these over and over with different designs and colors!
