Picnic Craft

Use paper strips and squares to create this fun picnic check ant craft!

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• Paper- White, Red, & Pink.
• Black Paint.
• Glue Stick

Tools

• Paper Cutter
• Scissors
• Black Marker or Pen

Instructions

1. Cut the pink paper into 1" strips and then cut 1, 1" strip of the red paper.
2. Use the glue stick to place 3 strips of pink horizontally on the white paper. Try to space them evenly apart.
3. Next, glue the pink strips to make vertical stripes. This should create white squares on your paper.
4. Cut the red strip of paper into 1" squares.
5. Then glue the red squares at any place that the pink lines intersect.
6. Trim off the edges anywhere the pink goes off the page.
7. Using a black pen or marker, create ant legs on your picnic check.
8. Then, using black paint, place fingerprint dots of paint on each set of legs. Then place one fingerprint above and one fingerprint below the first dot to create your ant's body.
9. Place as many ants as you like!

Snowflake Shaped Flowers

While we were crafting snowflakes, last winter, some inspiration hit. These would make amazing paper flowers!

Snowflake Flowers

Using the classic snowflake cut out design we are creating a fun flower art project!

Materials

• White or Blue Paper for Background
• Flower Color Construction Paper

Tools

• Pencil (optional for younger kids)
• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Green Marker

Instructions

1. Fold your construction paper into 4ths. Then make a triangle corner so you can create squares.
2. Cut off the excess paper.
3. Unfold and cut into 4 squares.
4. Fold back into a triangle and lightly fold up the right tip.
5. Then fold up the left tip. This should create a tulip shape. Adjust so that all 3 triangles are the same size.
6. Round off the uneven edges. This will leave you with a teardrop shape.
7. If your child is able to cut the edges of the shape let them go to town. If not let them use a pencil to draw some shapes for you to cut out.
8. Unfold your flowers and arrange them on your paper.
9. Glue down flowers in a few places to secure them.
10. Using your green marker add stems, leaves, and/or vines. Then place grass along the bottom of the paper.

How to make a Toilet Paper Tube Butterfly

This Toilet Paper Tube Butterfly craft is so much fun to make!

Materials

• 1 clean cardboard tube, like a toilet paper tube (per project)
• 2 wiggly eyes
• 1 black pipe cleaner
• Printable Butterfly template
• Construction Paper

Tools

• Glue
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Clear tape

Instructions

1. Print the butterfly template and use it to trace pieces of construction paper. Let your child cut out each of the pieces.
2. Cut another sheet of paper to fit the cardboard tube, approximately 4 inches by 6 inches. Glue the paper to the cardboard tube.
3. Glue the wings to the back of the paper tube.
4. Let your child decorate the wings.
5. Cut the pipe cleaner in half. Then, bend one half in the middle. Wrap the ends around a pencil to create curls.
6. Attach the center of the pipe cleaner to the inside of the tube with clear tape.
7. Add a couple of wiggly eyes. (if you don't have wiggly eyes, let your child draw on eyes!)
8. Allow the craft to dry completely before playing or displaying.

How to Make a Paper Tulip Scene

Grab some construction paper and make a beautiful tulip scene that pops off the paper!

Materials

• Construction Paper - Blue, Green, and Flower Color of Choice

Tools

• Scissors
• Pencil
• Glue Stick

Instructions

1. Start by folding your flower color so that you have 4 layers. Draw on a teardrop shape.
2. Cut out the teardrops and start to layer them. Place the first row to create a wide V and glue.
3. Take a third petal and place right in the center. Glue down.
4. Flip the flower over and place the fourth petal slightly to the side so that the tip shows.
5. With your green sheet of paper, cut two strips the short length of the paper for stems. Then fold the paper in half so it is long and skinny. Cut out two leaves.
6. Next, use a zig-zag cut down the rest of the green sheet.
7. Cut the seem on your grass. You will have 4 pieces of grass when done.
8. Start layering two pieces of your grass on the bottom of the blue sheet. Alternate where the points go.
9. Add on your flower stems.
10. Then place another layer of grass. You can roll the layers forward a bit so it pops off the page.
11. Flip over the blue paper and trim off any grass that hangs over the edge.
12. Now add on your flowers!
13. And last your leaves.
14. You can fluff your flower petals too to help them pop off the page!

Best way to press flowers

We are nearing our move and I’m finding myself looking for pieces of Florida to bring with us. I have tons of seashells, pictures of palm trees, and air plants, but I still wanted something more. While flipping through my vintage art books I saw a chapter on pressed flowers and I was hooked. So I started right away.

This craft is a great spring activity for kids. They can walk around and pick colorful spring flowers, press them, and then arrange them. It’s a great way to work on those fine motor skills.

Plus, any time I can make a flower craft I’m happy. Something about flowers always brings a smile to my face.

Pressed flowers make a fantastic spring craft. Display them or give them as gifts!

• Freshly picked flowers
• Paper Towels
• Picture Frames

Tools

• Heavy Books
• Scissors (optional)

Instructions

1. First, gather some flowers. 
2. Layout your flowers on two layers of paper towels.
3. Gently press them into place.
4. Cover with 2 layers of paper towels. Then smash them in a large book.
5. Weigh them down with whatever you have around and put them out of the way for a few weeks. (These are those vintage art books)
6. After you have waited at least 2 weeks gently open the books and pull out the paper towels.
7. Next just play around with your layouts.  I moved mine around quite a bit deciding which flowers I liked etc.  When you have a good idea of what you like, open your frames and place them directly on the glass.
8. Then place paper and layer in extra padding (magazine pages) to make it nice and tight when you close it.

White Chocolate Spring Treats

These sweet treats are super easy and your kids will love making them!

Ingredients

Ingredients

• White Melting Chocolates
• Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
• Sprinkles

Supplies

• Parchment Paper.
• Fork and Butter Knife.

Instructions

1. Melt your chocolates on a double boiler, or in short increments in the microwave.
2. Drop a few cracker sandwiches into the melted chocolate.
3. Using your fork, flip each cracker and press them down into the chocolate.
4. When they are completely covered lift them out with your fork. Make sure to let as much extra chocolate drip off as possible.
5. Then, using your butter knife, slide the cracker onto a piece of parchment paper.
6. Use sprinkles, dots, or colored white chocolate drizzles to decorate your treats!
7. Place them in the fridge to speed up the setting time of the chocolate.

Supplies for Giant Paper Sunflowers

• Construction Paper, Yellow
• Pipe Cleaners, Green and Brown
• Hole Punch
• Scissors
• Paper Cutter

How to make these construction paper sunflowers for kids

Cut yellow construction paper into strips using a paper cutter. Make the paper strips in different widths. 

We cut few 0.75 inches wide and some 0.5 inches wide. It’s important that the paper strips are wide enough to punch a hole using paper puncher. 

Pick some paper strips that are the same width, stack, and align them. Punch holes on both sides.

Take a brown pipe cleaner, fold 1/3, and flatten a little piece to create a stopper for the paper strips.

Pick one of the wider paper strips, fold to connect the ends, and slide the pipe cleaner through both holes. Repeat with other paper strips. Note: we are adding paper strips on the longer part of the pipe cleaner.

For the center of the sunflower, we want petals to be a bit shorter. If needed, shorten a few strips with scissors and punch holes again. Thread on the pipe cleaner, the same way we did with wide and long yellow strips before. 

When you add all the paper strips, use a brown pipe cleaner to create the center of the sunflower. Coil it into a circle while pressing the center.

Flip your sunflower over to add and secure a green pipe cleaner on the back. This will be the stem. 

Arrange petals a bit if needed. And, you are finished. You have made a lovely giant paper sunflower! Pretty, isn’t it?

How to make paper flowers and build fine motor skills for preschoolers

Using a paper cutter, cut 0.5-inch wide paper strips. You will need at least one paper strip from each of the colors of the rainbow to make a single flower.

Pick all the paper strips and align them. Punch a hole on each end through all the stacked paper strips making sure holes are aligned on individual paper strips. 

Take a pipe cleaner, fold it in half. Flatten a little piece in the middle of the pipe cleaner to form an end of the stem. It will help stop the paper strips from sliding to the end of the pipe cleaner. 

Slide the pipe cleaner through both holes of each paper strip. Start with orange and follow the order of the colors on the rainbow until you finish threading all paper strips.

Use one half of the pipe cleaner to form a flower’s receptacle. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the bottom of the flower and flatten as you go. 

Using paper strips in different length, you can create differently sized rainbow flowers. For smaller flowers, use shorter paper strips. For bigger paper flowers, use longer paper strips.
