• Delicious Snacks. Every party needs some munchies!

Your party doesn’t have to break the bank to achieve all of these things! The best parties we have thrown over the years were very budget-friendly. We have lots of low-budget yet big impact ideas to share with you!

Tips to Throw a Kid’s Birthday Party at Home

The first thing you need when planning any kids’ birthday party is to pick a theme. It can be anything! We have all of our parties listed below to get you inspired! Then you need to get planning… there is nothing worse than everything landing on your plate at the last minute. If you are going to make your at-home party budget-friendly that is going to come with a bit of DIY. So planning ahead to is a must!

Birthday Party Activities

Take it up a Notch. To make a party successful you want to do things they love, but find a way to make it epic. If your kid’s favorite thing right now is bubbles then get everyone around blowing bubbles! Take dressing up like a princess to the next level by creating a giant princess castle to play in. Maybe some quick no-sew costumes for them to play their favorite characters. Bring that theme to life!

Party Food Ideas

Feed the Kids. Start with what your kid would want to eat and then grow your menu around that. If their favorite food right now is box Mac and Cheese it’s OK to serve that! Maybe you can find a fun shape that goes with your theme.

Drink Stations. You can work a theme into your drink station by letting your kid pick flavors. Pick your pink lemonade or mix your moo. You can also add DIY-themed cups. We made ours for Minecraft with a template. Putting stickers on paper cups is fast and cheaper than buying themed cups.

Quick Printables Ideas. Find your characters online to create signs, decorated skewers, or even cupcake toppers for your food table. Print on thick cardstock at home or order online at a local Staples/Office Max.

We are always our own worst critics! Fancy cakes are expensive! If you aren’t the best cake decorator that doesn’t matter. Adding a theme to a cake can be as simple as a couple of figurines or printables on cake-pop sticks. Your child will be happy to keep those decorations to play with later!

Working in your Party Theme

Favors can be used during the party! Have the party favors be props for your main activity or part of your decorations! This gives them 2 uses and helps the party’s memory live on long after it’s over.

Easy Themed Food. With access to the internet, you can print off (or order prints) of just about anything for your party. Adding characters to the ends of toothpicks or cake pop sticks is a fast, and affordable, way to add your party theme in another place for next to nothing.

Stuff balloons with little toys. It’s a 2-man job, but you can add candy, toys, bracelets, and more themed prizes into balloons before blowing them up. It’s the excitement of a piñata for each kid! They can pop a balloon at the end of a Justin Time adventure. Use a sword to pop the balloon spider in a real-life game of Minecraft. We even had balloons at the end of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle training! Keep a few baggies with the toys to the side for any child who is too scared to pop a balloon.

Buy plastic tablecloths. They can be used for so many things!! The floor or doors to a castle. Dragon wings, curtains, giant arrows, obviously tables… They are cheap and big which is a win-win!

Birthday Party Flow

Move things around. When throwing a birthday party at home you may need to do a bit of rearranging. Weather permitting you can work with inside and out, but that isn’t always the case.

Think about how you want people to flow through your house and if you want to block anything off. We put post-it notes with giant Xs on the bedroom doors and any other “off-limit” spaces. A strategically placed table can block off a whole section of your house or at least keep the kids from running in circles… You may want to move your table up against a wall to allow people to walk around more freely. Get those extra chairs placed where people can relax (out of the way) and see what’s going on.

Create a Timeline. Have something for guests to do when they arrive. You don’t want everyone waiting around for the last person to show up. This can be something simple or part of your main activity later. Like coloring jerseys for a scoreboard. Or having a photo-op in a summer selfie booth.

Plan Ahead. The biggest tip I have for having a successful party is to get organized, plan ahead, & break things apart. On the day of the party no one knows what you didn’t do… so give yourself some grace and enjoy the day!

Paper Doily Flowers

If you follow along you know that I am a self-proclaimed craft hoarder. I tend to hold onto craft supplies for way too long in the hopes that I might find a good use for them down the road.

I bought a pack of doilies for V’s first birthday party. I used them to decorate her giant V.

These doilies worked perfectly for creating this paper rose craft.

Like many of our projects, this is an easy craft that we’ve snuck some fine motor skill-building into.

This roses are very simple. But here are some tips to help you along the way.

• If you are making a lot, cut the centers out of multiple doilies at once.
• Don’t have twist ties? That’s ok, use small hair ties, rubber bands, or even string to tie the ends together.
• When fluffing the petals, start on the outside and work your toward the middle of the doily
• Use a light touch with the watercolors. You can always go back and add more paint later.

Lego Chore Chart

It seems like we are constantly updating the way that we have J help around the house. As he gets older he is getting more responsibilities and we are trying to teach him good values with his money.

We have created a Lego chore chart to help us keep track of it all. Since it is interactive and Lego he is all about getting to his chores.

Each type of Lego has its own monetary value. As an example, here is how we labeled each type of brick. You can adjust based on your family’s needs and budget.

How to pay out your chore tracker

Keep in mind, while writing out your bricks, some of this money will go to savings… at least that is our setup.

I created enough bricks that my son could do them all in one week. However, that has yet to happen. These are the guidelines that we set up. Make what works for Your family! Then be consistent.

1. If we ask him to do something on a brick he must do it right away, or he will still need to do it, and won’t get a brick.
2. He doesn’t get paid until he has completed his whole jar of bricks. This would equal $13.
3. He has to deposit $5 into a savings account.

Tips for making a dotted suncatcher

• If you’re creating with a large group of kids, you can roll the contact paper across the workspace. Then cut smaller top pieces and put each child’s name on them before cutting them out.
• Use the grid on the back of the contact paper to help you draw the cross shape.
• When choosing ink colors, make sure to use colors that work well together. This will help any overlapping colors from looking brown.
• Punch a hole in the top of the cross and use them for bookmarks too!

1. Start by drawing a cross onto the clear side of your contact paper.

4. Press the pencil eraser onto the ink pad and then onto the cross. Have the kids aim for the inside of the cross shape.
5. Change between colors until your cross is full. Make sure that they go all the way out to the edges.
6. Place a second piece of contact paper on top. Sticky side to sticky side.
7. Press the pieces together to remove any air bubbles.
8. Finish up by cutting out your cross suncatcher craft!

White Chocolate Spring Treats

These sweet treats are super easy and your kids will love making them!

Ingredients

Ingredients

• White Melting Chocolates
• Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
• Sprinkles

Supplies

• Parchment Paper.
• Fork and Butter Knife.

Instructions

1. Melt your chocolates on a double boiler, or in short increments in the microwave.
2. Drop a few cracker sandwiches into the melted chocolate.
3. Using your fork, flip each cracker and press them down into the chocolate.
4. When they are completely covered lift them out with your fork. Make sure to let as much extra chocolate drip off as possible.
5. Then, using your butter knife, slide the cracker onto a piece of parchment paper.
6. Use sprinkles, dots, or colored white chocolate drizzles to decorate your treats!
7. Place them in the fridge to speed up the setting time of the chocolate.

Valentine’s Day Paper Tree

How to make a paper heart tree

Begin by cutting the brown construction paper into strips. Use the short side of the paper to cut 1 strip that is about an inch wide. 

The rest of the strips can vary in thickness.

The 1″ strip will be the trunk of the paper three. Cut this strip in half lengthwise.

Glue one half of the 1″ strip to your blue paper and start adding all of your branches. It’s OK to have them hanging over the edges a bit. 

Once all the branches are glued down, add the second half of the trunk to the top to help hold it all together. 

Cut the green paper to add a grassy hill. 

Grab the end of each branch and twist it a couple of times. Then glue the end onto the blue paper. This will give your tree it’s fun 3D look. 

Next, cut out hearts and add the names of family members and friends. 

Glue the paper hearts onto the branches. 

Add as many as you like!

Easy Winter Puzzle

We love to make snowflakes to hang around the house each winter season. It is nice to have a decoration you can keep up even when you take the tree down.

Since we inked the edges of our snowflakes this year we went into overdrive with how many snowflakes we ended up making.

I had to find something else to do with them. Since they each had different colored edges they were perfect for making this fun winter puzzle!

Supplies for a paper puzzle

• Paper Snowflakes. The inked edges from this tutorial really help pick the different puzzles apart.
• Jumbo Paint Sticks.
• Mod Podge.
• Craft Knife. Parents use only.
• Tape. Scotch or masking.
• A Foam Brush.

How to make this winter toddler activity

Start by lining up your sticks for your puzzle. I used 6 for each puzzle. 

Use tape to secure your sticks together. 

Flip your stick over, tape side down, and use your foam brush to put on a light layer of Mod Podge.

Then line up your snowflake and press down. I like to tilt snowflake a bit to help the pieces look a bit different. 

Go over the top of the snowflake with Mod Podge. Try to get out any bubbles.

Some of the ink might bleed, but it gives the snowflake a light tint of the color which doesn’t look bad. 

Let them dry completely and then use your Exacto knife to cut between each stick. Be very careful. 

Remove the tape from the back and then add a bit more Mod Podge to the cut edges of the puzzle pieces. 

Allow to dry completely and then play!  

With the inked edges, you can mix all your winter puzzles together. These make a fun little busy bag to keep with you for quick boredom buster anytime you need it!

Six-Sided Snowflake Paper Craft

I have always loved making snowflakes! There something about the awe of unfolding and seeing what all of your random cuts and shapes have created.

I actually created these snowflakes a few years back, but we were in the middle of moving so I never wrote about it. This year was the first time we have made them since and they are just as pretty as I remembered!

The inked edges give this six-sided snowflake paper craft a finished look. Which makes them perfect for any winter projects you might have.

How to cut a snowflake

First, we need to make our snowflakes. These instructions will help you to make a six-sided snowflake.

Start by cutting your paper into a square. Then fold it into a triangle. Then fold that triangle in half. 

Now to get the six sides you have to fold this triangle into thirds. Start by folding one side towards the middle leaving about the same sized piece next to it. Then fold the other side over the top. Sometimes it takes a little wiggling to get it just right. Once you fold a few it gets pretty easy. 

Cut off the points along the straight line. 

Let your little one draw with a pencil what they want you to cut out. 

Use nice sharp scissors to cut out their shapes. 

On a piece of scratch paper take your marker and trace along the cut lines of your snowflake. Flip over and do the same thing on the back side. 

Then unfold to see your beautiful creation! 

Cutting a six-sided snowflake is always so much fun to do as a family and adding colors really make them pop!

Snowflake Art Project

I have always been a fan of resist art. Little kids are always in awe when the paint just won’t go where the waxy surface is.

I love this fun little twist for this resist snowflake art project for a few reasons.

First, they don’t make as much of a mess as getting out the watercolors.

Second, they are learning about color mixing.

And third, I love the look of surprise when they peel up their designs to see what they created!

Classroom art project supplies:

• Washable Markers.
• Foil.
• Cardstock.
• White Oil Pastel. You could use a good white crayon as well. The lines will just be a bit thinner.
• Spray Bottle filled with Water.

How to make these winter art projects

Start by designing your snowflakes on your white cardstock. It can be tricky to see what you have on there. Sit next to a good light source and hold the paper at an angle if you need to from time to time. You can do one big giant snowflake with dots all around or a few small ones. 

Next, on your foil start swirling around your markers. 

Add in different shades of blues.

Then sprits lightly with water. 

Place your paper onto the foil. You want the snowflake side of the paper touching the marker side of the foil.

Press the paper down to get as much of the marker on as you can. 

Then peel up and see your creation! 

The more water you use the more the colors will blend together. 

Place off to the side and allow them to dry. They will curl a bit so once they are dry you can place them under a few heavy books to flatten out.

Break out the pink construction paper to make this adorable farm animal.

Materials

• Construction Paper - Pink, Blue, and Brown
• Glue Stick

Tools

• Scissors
• Grey or Black Marker
• Pencil

Instructions

1. Start by cutting a curved edge on the brown paper. This is to make the mud your pig will be playing in. Glue the brown paper to the bottom of your blue sheet.
2. On the pink paper, draw and cut out an oval for the body, another oval for the head, two triangle ears, a small oval for the nose, four small ovals for the hooves, and a paper strip for the tail.
3. Glue the body about halfway up the brown paper. Then glue the head to the top of the body.
4. Next, attach the pig's ears.
5. Wrap the tail around a pencil to give it a curl and then set it aside.
6. Draw a couple of dots to the nose for his nostrils.
7. Using the leftover pink paper, cut a few strips of paper and accordion fold them. Glue one side of the accordion down to the head. Then add glue to the other side to his snout. 
8. Repeat this with each of his four hooves.
9. Glue on the curly tail.
10. Finally, draw on the eyes.
