How to make a DIY Cord Wrap for a personalized phone charger

Learn how to make a DIY cord wrap with this video tutorial. Tweens, teens, and adults will love creating this type of custom charging cable using a simple friendship bracelet knot and some embroidery thread. Make them to give as handmade gifts, label family chargers, or just for fun!

DIY Cord Wrap

This charging cord wrap pattern is a unique craft that older kids can make on their own. Watch the video or follow the step-by-step instructions to learn how to make one.

We have been making a ton of friendship bracelets lately. This wrapped cord takes the concepts of thread bracelets and takes them to another level.

The spiral design uses a forward knot to create a string of twists that look kind of like spiral staircases. This is why the technique is sometimes called the Chinese staircase pattern.

You can use this embroidery craft in several ways.

Give them to your best friend.
Use different colors to label all the tablet and phone cords in your home.
Make them at a sleepover.
Create them during long car rides.
Wrap extension cords when they are visible.

How many colors can be used?

You can use 1 color to decorate this phone cord. In our example, we used a color-shifting type of embroidery thread to give it a gradual color change.

Ways to secure cords while you’re making them.

To get really good results, you want to make sure that everything is secure while you’re creating the knots. Here are a few ideas for securing your thread.

Use a binder clip to secure it to a flat surface.
Clip the string onto a clipboard.
Use masking tape to secure it to your work surface.

Knots used in this braided cord charger

To create this look you should be familiar with the forward knot.

If you are not comfortable with this technique, head over to our basic friendship bracelet knots tutorials. There you will learn 5 of the basic string knots including the backward knot and square knots.

Personalized Phone Charger

Personalize your phone charger with this fun forward knot tutorial! Just like a Chinese ladder design you get a fun spiral decoration on your charging cord!

Active Time 1 hour

Difficulty Easy

Materials

Phone Cord
Embroidery Thread. I used 2 for my 3' phone cord. I also chose an ombre style strings so that the color shifts through the design.

Tools

Tape
Scissors

Instructions

Attach a phone cord to your work surface.
Tie one end of the embroidery string to your charger. Keep the string in the packaging so it doesn't get too messy.
Slide the knot as far up the cord as you can.
Create a forward knot with the short end of the knot held tight against the charger cord.
To create your forward knot take the long string and go over the phone cord, creating a number 4, then go under the phone cord and up through the loop created by the 4.
Pull tight (make sure you have that tail from step 4 in there).
Then slide the knot up.
Trim the extra end a bit shorter and then complete a few more forward knots, carefully so the end stays inside the design.
Now just repeat!
As you work down the cord, the knotting string will naturally work its way under the center string (cord). Just pass it back under to the left side and continue making forward knots.
If the phone charger is long, you may need to thread in more embroidery thread. To do this add a new thread along the phone cord.
Create a few forward knots with the new string inside the knot with the phone cord. Be careful not to pull down until you have a few knots in place.
Then swap strings. Putting the old string into the center with the phone cord and using your new string to create the knots.
Just like in the beginning you can trim off this end.
Carefully do the next few knots so that you hide that end inside completely.
Then just keep knotting! Work your way all the way to the other end of your charging cord.
Tie off at the end and then trim off any remaining string.

The flower bracelet is a more advanced technique. If you are a beginner, you may want to try an easier pattern first. Try this classic candy stripe bracelet!

You can use this bracelet craft in several ways.

Flower Bracelet Tutorial

Use basic knots to make a flower-patterned friendship bracelet!

Active Time 30 minutes

Total Time 30 minutes

Difficulty Medium

Materials

2 strands - Yellow Embroidery Thread - A few inches longer than around your wrist
2 strands - Green Embroidery Thread - Double the length of your yellow
4 strands - Pink Embroidery Thread - Same length as the green

Tools

Scissors
Binder Clip

Instructions

Gather all the strands of thread and tie a knot at one end. Clip the knotted end to a flat surface. Begin with creating a square knot with the green string around the pink and yellow strings.
Add multiple green square knots before starting the first flower. How many you make is up to you!
To start the flower pull the green strings into the middle, with the yellow. Start a square knot with the pink. You will be holding 2 pink strings at a time. Make sure to get it nice and snug under the green square knot.
Create the second half of the square knot. This is the top of your flower.
Next, pull the right green string off to the side. Using 2 of the pink strings together create a 1/2 backward knot. Pull tight and slide up the green.
Follow this with a 1/2 forward knot on the same string. This completes a backward forward knot and the flower petal should be off to the right hand side.
Create a second petal by repeating another backward forward knot.
Next, move to the left hand side. You will create 2 forward backward knots to make 2 petals on the left. This is the same process as before. Except you will create a 1/2 forward knot followed by a 1/2 backward knot twice.
Using the yellow strands create the center by completing a forward knot.
To complete the flower create one final square knot with the pink strings. Around the green and yellow strings.
Bring the green strings back around to the outside and start on your next section of green square knots.
You can tighten the green square knots up under the flowers by pulling the rest of the strings side to side once you have a few knots down.
You can also use your fingers to pinch and shape the flowers a bit if you need!
Keep creating flowers and green until you are happy with the size of your bracelet. Tie off the end and you're done!

Notes

We are using two pink strands at a time. This makes the flower bigger.

From amazing heart crafts to creative flower crafts and some unique art projects. You’ll find a project for preschoolers and for the older kids.

8 popsicle sticks
Rocks
Glue

Instructions

Build the frame by attaching two popsicle sticks to each side and two popsicle sticks to the top and bottom. Glue the corners to secure the sticks in place.
When the glue on the frame is dry, glue rocks all around the frame.
Print the printable insert on heavy cardstock. Cut it out around the outer border and glue it to the back of the frame.

Give your rock a quick white base coat.
Once the white coat has dried. Paint the rock red using acrylic paint. You may need more than one coat to get good coverage.

Once dry, use the black paint pen to touch up any lines.

Supplies for your rock game:

Get all the supplies you need from our Amazon shop!

Mini Rocks.
Mini Canvas Bag.
Paint Pens. I used 3M colored Posca for the shapes.
Liner Paint Pen. I used a 1M Posca.
Brush on Sealer.
Brush.

How to make a travel game from painted rocks

You can make these memory games in minutes. It is definitely something that the little ones can help you create!

If you do not have paint pens you can create this game with regular acrylic paints and a brush. However, if you have it in your budget to get these awesome paint pens I highly recommend it. It really helps little ones create and the clean up is a breeze!

First, decide how many rocks you want in your memory game. I chose 12 because I wanted to do a picture for each color of the rainbow.

Try to find stones that are similar in shape and size so they aren’t recognizable when flipped over.

Then start adding your designs! Do 2 of each.

Depending on your child’s age you can make them really simple. Just 2 yellow circles, 2 blue circles, etc. Or, if older or you are creating them for your older kids you can paint on pictures. Suns, swirls, etc.

Once the paint dries you can add an outline to help them pop and give them a more finished look. This is totally optional, but can really pull your designs together.

The last touch is a brush-on sealer. This will help protect the paint from getting dinged up in the bag.

Then you’re done! Lay them out and start playing!

How to easily make kindness rocks with your kids.

Make kindness rocks with your kids using this quick base coating technique. These colorful stones are perfect for lots of rock painting ideas for kids!

Kindness Rocks

Whether you have painted 1, 10, or 100 rocks you are going to love this fun way to create kindness rocks to hide around town.

A simple painting technique that even the youngest of kiddos can help out with. The perfect way to spread around a little joy this rock hunting and hiding season!

I first saw this method on a rock painting website. It’s such an inexpensive method for adding a base coat to rocks.

Supplies to quickly add a base coat to rocks:

Rocks.
Acrylic Paints. 2 Colors that can blend well.
2 Plastic Tubs.
2 Smaller Cups or Containers.
Water.
Craft Sticks.
Parchment Paper.
Wooden Skewers.
Hole Punch.
Scissors.
White Paint Pen.

How to make a pour painting station

A big part of this process is creating the dripping stands. You will need 2.

Upcycle old food containers to make these! Punch 2 holes on each side, then cut out to the top using scissors. Place the skewers across the top to hold the rock up!

How to base coat your rocks

Mix your acrylic paint with a little bit of water, just enough to get it a bit more fluid. You can play around a bit with the consistency and always add a second coat if you end up a bit too thin.

Place your first rock on your stand and pour the paint over. Let the extra drip over the edges. You can blow on the rock to pop any bubbles.

Then remove the rock and place it on parchment paper.

Next, pour your second rock, on the same stand, using your second color.

The 3rd rock you can place on your second stand and pour your overflow from the first 2 rocks. Both colors will mix on top to create an awesome marbled look!

Continue this process back and forth until you use up all of the paint. You can use a craft stick to help get all the surface.

You will end up with some single colored rocks and some marbled rocks, and some when the colors blend completely together.

Allow your rocks to dry completely before adding on your words. A white paint pen works great for this!

Add on cute little words or phrases that would brighten someone’s day.

How to make a fun 3D Valentine’s Day card

This 3D Valentine’s Day Card will wow, with very little effort. And since we use construction paper, they cost next to nothing. They’re perfect for passing out to friends or giving to loved ones.

3D Valentine’s Day Card

Everyone loves the feeling of getting something in the mail! To get something special mixed in with all the blah we usually receive can really brighten our day! We wanted to create a template to help your kiddos create a fun and unique card to send out to those they love. They can pick from different backgrounds and create them so many different ways.

Supplies for A Construction Paper Heart Valentine

Template.
Paper. White Cardstock, Colored Cardstock, Construction Paper, or Plain Printer Paper!
Scissors.
Glue Stick.
Markers, Crayons, or Colored Pencils.

How to make these homemade Valentines:

To create your card first pick from one of the 4 background template choices. Some would work for Valentines Day cards. Others you can use through the year for Mother’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, or just to send out something special! You have a lot of different options on how you can create your hearts. Take a peek at the video below to see them all! Once you decide on your hearts, you can choose from a colored template or a blank one that your child can decorate, cut all 4 out.

Then glue your largest heart over the dotted heart on the template.

Fold each of the smaller hearts in half, the design or color on the inside.

Starting with the smallest heart add glue to the seem. Press lightly so the glue goes up the sides a bit.

Place that heart inside the fold of the next size up.

Next, add the glue to the seem of that heart and add to your last folded heart.

Fold and crease your card template in half.

Then add all of your hearts inside the big heart, using glue on the seem again.

Fold and press the seam for at least 10 seconds. Open, fluff your hearts, and allow to dry completely.

These cards are so sweet to pass out and are sure to brighten anyone’s day! Grab your template here!
