These flowers are very simple. But here are some tips to help you along the way.

We chose yellow for the circle, but you can choose whichever color you want!
If you are trying to create this craft quickly, pre-paint your circles.
Or you can glue construction paper to the cardboard, instead of painting.
Try creating them using different cardboard shapes.
Let them play with the different sizes too!
Younger children may need help cutting the cardboard. You can cut the centers ahead of time
Use a piece of painter’s tape to create a loop on the backside of your cardboard. This holds it in place and is really helpful to younger painters.

5 Pipe Cleaners per flower
Tape

Tools

Scissors
Hole Punch
Foam Brush
Black Marker

Instructions

Start by cutting your cardboard into circles.
Then use a hole punch to create 5 holes.
Paint your cardboard yellow using a foam brush.
Once dry, draw on a smile (optional)
Start adding your pipe cleaners by sticking the 2 ends in holes next to each other.
Continue adding pipe cleaners until you have worked your way all the way around your flower, ending in your first hole.
Flip your flower over and tape to secure pipe cleaners in the back.

Instructions

Cut your cardboard into triangle shapes. This may need to be done ahead depending on the age of the crafter.
Using the back end of the paintbrush, puncture the cardboard and slip the brush under the top layer.
Pinch and peel off the top layer of the cardboard exposing the inner binding.
You can also pull off along the edges.
Repeat on 3 separate cardboard triangles leaving some of the top layer in place.
Start painting in the solid spaces with one of your secondary colors.
Then, using a smaller brush, paint the lines left behind where the top layer was removed.
Paint a second coat on the solid areas if needed.
These completed projects can be used to talk about shape and color!
BONUS IDEA: Give your green triangles a Christmas twist by decorating them with anything you have lying around. Paper, glitter glue, rhinestones, etc.

Materials

Cardboard
Yellow Construction Paper
6 Pipe Cleaners - I mixed yellow and orange.

Tools

Hole Punch
Scissors
Black Marker
Glue Stick
Tape

Instructions

Cut a circle out of cardboard.
Glue your circle onto a piece of yellow construction paper.
Cut around the cardboard. You will now have a yellow paper-covered cardboard circle.
Use a hole punch to create 6 holes. To ensure even spacing, punch your first hole. Then punch a hole across from the first hole. Then place 2 punches in between the first and second holes. Repeat on the other side.
Draw on a happy sun face or decorate any way you like!
Fold each of your pipe cleaners in half. The easiest way to do this is to match up the ends and then pinch in the middle.
Put each side of your pipe cleaner into holes that are next to each other on the sun.
If you are using 2 colors of pipe cleaners alternate the color of your sun rays.
Once you have 2 rays added, flip it over and secure the X they create on the back with tape.
Continue your way around the sun adding your rays and securing with tape.
When you add your last ray in you should have 2 X on the back to finish up.
Flip over and it's complete!

How to Make a Cardboard Castle: an easy step by step tutorial

This tutorial will teach you how to make a cardboard castle using boxes you may have around your house. This cardboard project is perfect for a birthday party, a playroom, or an afternoon activity!

Building this cardboard play castle reminded me of my mom. Our ability to create with cardboard is completely hereditary.

Do you think Susie would be able to create Minecraft swords without training from a cardboard master?

Our mom created puppet show stages, giant trees, castles, and an old west town with refrigerator boxes and paint.

When I popped open that bottle of pink tempera paint, I was flooded with memories of watching my mom create backdrops for our school plays.

For all those who don’t have paint fume flashbacks to help you out…here is a step-by-step guide for how I made the cardboard play castle for Little Miss’ princess birthday party.

Tips for making a cardboard castle

Make the majority of your project before the event. Then assemble the pieces in their final resting place.
Determine what you want to happen inside the castle. We added mirrors and jewelry so that the kids could play princess.
You can make your castle any color you want! We chose pink because it is my little girl’s favorite color.

Cardboard Play Castle Tutorial

This castle was much easier to create than it looks. It all started with three large boxes

Active Time 1 hour

Materials

Large cardboard boxes
Tempera Paint
Shims or paint sticks
Inexpensive Plastic Table Clothes
String
Packing Tape (or other strong tape)
Glitter (optional)
Hot Glue

Optional Items for playing in your castle

Fake Flowers
Costume Jewelry
Small Mirrors
Foam stickers

Tools

Box Cutter
Paint Brushes
Something sharp to poke holes into the cardboard

Instructions

Take apart all of your boxes along the seams
Play around with arranging the boxes until you find a shape that you like that will stand on its own.
Paint the outside of the boxes at least 2 coats of tempera paint. You may need a third coat if the print on the boxes is extra dark.
To keep the box flaps upright, use hot glue to attach shims (or paint stir sticks) across the folds.
Once the paint is dry, reassemble the boxes into your castle shape. If you are transporting your castle later, hold the pieces together using binder clips and or clothespins.
With a sharp box cutter, cut out a door, windows, and whatever else you want to make your cardboard castle.
I left the bottoms of the windows attached so that the kids could close the windows.
Begin to paint the details. I used purple paint to paint the window detail and bricks around the doorway.
Glue 2 pieces of the inexpensive table cloth to the inside of the doorway.
Move your castle to its final destination to assemble it. Poke holes in the corners and attach the boxes together using string.
Line the floor with another unfolded box. Then cover it with an inexpensive table cloth. Make sure to tape the doorway down really well.
We added some glitter to parts of the castle. This is optional.
"Plant" some flowers around the doorway.
Decorate the inside with things that you already have. I used some foam stickers that I had from Hobby Lobby.
Hang some mirrors and add some dress-up items to encourage interactive play.

Since we have been pour painting on everything in sight, we were not going to pass up a fun chance to do something for St. Patrick’s Day! We decided to create a fun shamrock mobile to hang around for the holiday!

Supplies for these fun shamrock decorations

Cardboard or Wooden Shamrocks.
Acrylic Paints. Green, Gold, & White.
Pouring Cups.
Medicine Cup.
Craft Sticks.
Pouring Medium. Or create your own DIY medium using 2 parts white glue 1 part water.
Parchment Paper.
Hole Punch.
Hemp.
A Stick.

How to make a fun St Patrick’s Day Mobile

Check out these step by step instructions for creating a pour painted shamrock. Then see it all in action in the video below!

Start by cutting out a few shamrocks from a thick piece of cardboard.

You will want this from a packing box, not a cereal box. Or you can just buy wooden shamrocks too! Prep your paints by mixing in at a 1:1 ratio of paint and pouring medium. Now start stacking your paints in your medicine cup. Go back and forth between the colors.

Then pour the stacked paint over your shamrocks!

Tilt them from side to side to get that paint moving.

You can drip them from one to another, give them a little nudge using a craft stick, or even do a second pour if you need!

When you are happy with your shamrocks place them on a piece of parchment paper to dry. Once they are dry, punch holes in the top of your shamrocks and secure to a stick with hemp.
