We love an easy craft that sneaks important skill-building. Create this simple sun craft with your classroom or at your kitchen table.

Suns are a fun craft theme that can be created all year round, though they tend to pop up in the summer.

This quilling technique was developed to make a beautiful art style more accessable for kids.

Children can use a craft stick to wrap their paper strips, which gives them more control.

Some other quilling crafts we’ve done are:

Another great thing about this simple craft is that it sneaks in cutting practice and fine motor skills.

Plus, these ant activities use simple craft supplies, like construction paper and craft sticks.

Paper Quilling Sun Craft

Print

Learn basic paper quilling with this fun sun craft!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Active Time 10 minutes

Total Time 15 minutes

Materials

• Paper - Yellow, Orange, & Blue.
• White Glue

Tools

• Paper Cutter
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Craft Sticks
• Pallet

Instructions

1. Cut most of the orange and yellow paper into 1" paper strips.
2. Leave about 4" to cut into triangles. You will want at least 6 triangles between the 2 colors.
3. Take one paper strip and glue the ends together to create a circle shape.
4. Place the circle on the background sheet of paper (in this case blue). Mark just inside of the circle with your pencil.
5. Start placing the triangles on the blue paper, covering the pencil marks.
6. Continue placing the triangles all the way around the circle lines.
7. Create a ring of glue then place the circle strip in the glue ring. Give it a little wiggle so that the glue is along the edges.
8. Now we start our quilling! Grab a craft stick and strip of paper. Line one end of the paper strip along the side of the craft stick and pinch. Slowly roll the paper strip over the craft stick holding it tight.
9. Continue wrapping the paper strip around the craft stick until the whole strip is wrapped around.
10. Slide the strip off and pinch the edges flat.
11. Dunk the rolled paper into the white glue and place it within the circle section of your sun.
12. Continue alternating between orange and yellow paper strips.
13. You can add as many quilled strips as you like until you are happy with your finished sun!

Penguin Craft

We love an easy craft that sneaks important skill-building. Create this simple penguin craft in your classroom or at your kitchen table.

Quilling is a fun paper craft technique. We wanted to create a method that was kid-friendly.

Kids wrap their construction paper strips around craft sticks before gluing them into place. This helps to give kids better control of each piece while building those important fine motor skills.

We’ve done this technique before with our paper turtles and quilled spiders.

Penguins are perfect for creating during your January lesson plans, or any other winter month. Or you can wait until World Penguin Day in April.

You can use these easy winter crafts in several ways.

• Hang your paper penguins in your playroom or classroom.
• Display several cute penguins on your classroom bulletin board.
• Put them on the front of a winter card.
• Decorate your front window.
• Add them to your fridge.
• Create them at your local library to go with some fun penguin books.

Quilled Paper Penguin

Get a beginners lesson on quilling while making this cute paper penguin craft!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Materials

• Paper- Sheet of Black and White. Scrap of orange.
• White Glue

Tools

• 2 Craft Sticks
• Pallet or Plate for Glue
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Paper Cutter

Instructions

1. Cut the black paper into 1" strips. Cut the white paper in half.
2. Take one black strip and glue the ends together to create a circle. This will be the penguin's belly.
3. Squeeze the circle a bit to create more of an oval shape. Use one of the craft sticks to add glue to the body and place it on one-half of the paper.
4. On a scrap of orange, draw and cut out 2 ovals and one small triangle. This will create the feet and a little orange beak.
5. Glue the ovals along the bottom of the penguin tucking them in slightly.
6. For the arms, trim curved edges on a paper strip and pick how long you want them to be.
7. Add glue and tuck them under the body.
8. Now we start quilling! Using a clean craft stick, pinch the end of a black strip and fold it around the craft stick.
9. Roll the stick while pinching the paper tightly until the whole strip is on the stick.
10. Slide the paper off and even out the edges.
11. Dip one end into white glue.
12. Then place in the penguin's body.
13. Continue this process, strip after strip, while you fill in the shape.
14. If any of the spirals unfold too far you can place another one inside.
15. On the second half of the white paper, trace an oval for the belly and two small ovals for the eyes. Cut them out.
16. Using a small scrap of black paper, attach the eyes and the beak with glue.
17. Add them both to your penguin and you're done!

Quilling Christmas Tree

Perhaps one of the most adaptable crafts from our book Construction Paper Crafts for Kids is our quilling for kids. You could do this craft to go with any theme! The results are adorable and it can spark a love for quilling in your kids, which can lead to endless projects in the future.

Supplies for this construction paper Christmas tree:

• Construction Paper. Green and brown for the tree. A few colors for decorations. We used red and yellow.
• White Cardstock. Any color will do but a thicker sheet for the base will help to keep it from curling or getting soggy.
• Craft Stick.
• White Glue.
• Glue Stick (optional).
• Paper Cutter.

Beginners guide to quilling

These step by step instructions for a quilling Christmas tree are perfect for anyone just starting out with quilling.  Then watch the video at the end to see it all in action.

Start by cutting your green and decoration pieces into 1″ strips.

Take 2 of your green strips and glue them end to end to create a circle.

Pinch the top and then 2 sides to create a tree-shaped triangle.

Secure to your paper using white glue. 

Now it’s time to start quilling. Use your craft stick as a guide to wrap your paper around.

This works great for little hands because the shape fo the craft stick helps to keep the paper from slipping. Slide the paper off your craft stick and dip it in glue.

Place inside your tree, don’t worry, it will unwind a bit.

Fill the tree with green quills.

Now you can add your decorations. Trim your colored strips in half, this way the quills are smaller. Add them to your tree until you like the look.

You can add them between or inside of the quills like we did at the top.

There is no “right” way to create this quilling Christmas tree. Trim a piece of brown paper to the size you would like for your trunk and let it dry!

Quilled Turkey

Are you looking for a fun turkey craft for your kids? We love creating cute turkeys from paper.  Add in a couple of googly eyes and you have a cute Thanksgiving craft that your kids will love creating!

How to make a Thanksgiving day papercraft:

Check out these step by step instructions to create a quilled paper turkey.  Then you can see it all in action in the video below!

Begin by cutting 3 brown strips that are one inch wide. Next, cut some red, orange, and yellow paper into 1-inch strips.

Create 3 tail feathers by gluing the inside edges of the brown strips together making a tear shape.

Glue all three tailfeather pieces together.

Glue them down to your backdrop using the white glue.

Now for the quilling! Grab a strip of the yellow, red, or orange paper and hold your craft stick at one end.

Use the stick to roll the paper. Slide the paper off of the stick and dip the end in glue.

Place the glue side of the paper into one of your feathers.

Continue doing this in whichever pattern you want.

To create the body of your turkey, cut out a peanut type shape with the brown paper.

Use leftover paper to create a beak and snood. Add a couple of googly eyes and you’re good to go.

Use your craft stick to add a touch more glue and attach the body to the feathers.

Quilling is a beautiful technique that adults use to create amazing pieces of art. Letting your little ones learn this process can spark endless creative opportunities for them! Not to mention it is an excellent fine motor activity too.

Black Construction Paper Quilling Spiders

We are having fun with all of our friendly construction paper spiders! Whether they are bouncing or climbing they have been a hit in our home.

We decided that we wanted to use one of our favorite techniques from Construction Paper Crafts for Kids. It’s perfect for little hands to take the first steps towards quilling!

Supplies for quilled construction paper spiders:

• Construction Paper. Black, white, and green.
• Paper Cutter.
• Craft Stick.
• Googly Eyes.
• White Glue.

Create your Quilled Halloween Craft

Check out these simple step by step instructions, to create your quilling spiders, and then watch the quick video at the end to see it all in action!

Start by cutting your black construction paper into strips. A paper cutter makes it easier to keep them all even. If you want the legs to be thinner, you can cut a few skinny strips too. Just set the legs to the side for later.

Take one strip and use a dab of glue, at one end, to create a circle and glue it to your green paper.

Use your craft stick to roll up a strip of your paper.

Holding the paper tight, dab one end into the glue and then place inside your circle. It will pop open a bit, and that’s ok!  (in fact my daughter loves watching this process!) Repeat this step until the circle is full.

Next, add legs on the outside edge. Glue them so they are sticking straight up from the side.

Use your craft stick to fold them over towards the paper.

Don’t forget to glue on a couple googly eyes! Last, add a little strip of white to create your web.

Trim and you’re done!

Paper Quilling Turtle

Paper quilling is one of those crafts that I always see and am amazed by. The beautiful things that can be created from strips of paper leave me in awe.

Did you know that you can use construction paper for quilling? I won’t pretend that this paper quilling technique is going to turn you into an amazing quiller, but your little ones can create some pretty fun pieces of art!

You can make this craft any time of the year, but World Turtle Day is in May!

• Construction Paper. We used blue, green, and yellow. You can use any colors you like!
• Paper Cutter. (Not necessary, but makes prep so much faster.)
• White Glue.
• Scissors.
• Craft Stick.
• Marker.

How to create your construction paper turtle

Check out these step by step instructions for creating a quilling turtle out of construction paper. Then watch the video below to see it all in action!

Start by cutting your “turtle colors” into strips.  The size of the turtle you create will determine how many strips you will need. I started with a sheet of each color. Grab a scrap of paper and cut out 4 legs, 1 head, and 1 tail.

Now you need to decide how big of a turtle you want to make. For the smaller turtles, create a circle using one strip of paper. For a larger turtle connect two paper strips together before gluing them into a circle. Trace the circle onto your blue piece of construction paper.

Glue the head, legs, and tail around the circle. Then glue the circle on top of them.
Now for the quilling. Take a strip of paper and wrap it around a craft stick. Hold it tight and slide it off the end.

Dunk it into some white glue and then place it inside your turtle shell. Watching them uncoil a bit is part of the fun. Continue with your quills until your turtle shell is full.

Use a marker to draw on a face. Once the turtles have dried a bit you can trim the edges of your blue paper to look like a pond!
