Paper Unicorn

My daughter is obsessed with unicorns. They decorate her room, she dresses up as a unicorn, and any time she sees something unicorn at the store, she wants it.

Unicorn crafts can be a bit challenging because creating a unicorn isn’t always easy. So we came up with this fun and easy printable paper unicorn craft.

My daughter loves it because she can create a fun unicorn and have it look “realistic”. Plus, the 3D effect always wows the kiddos.

Tips for making this printable unicorn craft

• For younger children, you can cut strips ahead of time.
• Make sure that the strip is secured before curling and attaching the second end. We like to press and count to ten.
• One printable pack will have enough strips to create all 3 unicorns.
• They can draw around the unicorn to complete their project.
• The unicorn template also comes in black and white. So kids can color the unicorns however they want!

Instructions

1. Print out your unicorn printable pack.
2. Cut the rainbow strips.
3. Place a dab of glue where the tail would come off of the unicorn and attach paper strip, color side up.
4. Curl the strip a few times and then attach to the paper.
5. Continue with as many strips as you like!

Paper Poinsettia Craft

We love to make paper flowers with our little ones! With Christmas right around the corner, I realized we have never made a classic Christmas poinsettia before!

I really wanted to make something the little ones could make to add to the decor for the holidays and these flowers would look great on any mantle or used as a centerpiece for your holiday feast.

Not only is this paper poinsettia craft cute, but it’s also easy to create. This means it would be fun for a classroom of kids or a simple afternoon craft at your house.

Supplies for this poinsettia decoration:

• Construction Paper. Red and Green.
• Yellow Pipe Cleaners.
• Scissors.
• Hole Punch.
• Styrofoam Balls. (I used 2″)
• Steak Knife. USE CAUTION

How to make Christmas poinsettias out of construction paper

Start by cutting the styrofoam ball in half using the steak knife. The serrated edges make this pretty simple, but I highly suggest this being done by an adult. 

Cutting something curved can be tricky and dangerous.  

Take the green paper and fan fold it 3 times. This will divide the paper into wide 4ths.

Now, using your scissors, cut out a bunch of leaves. Try to fit 3 leaf shapes on the strip. 

This will give you a total of 12 leaves. They do not have to be the same shape or size. 

Now fold your red paper the same way. The poinsettia pedals have the same leaf shape, however, you want your pedals to get smaller. So start large and make each pedal smaller. Try to get 4 cut out of the strip, which will give you 16 pedals. 

Using a hole punch, create holes in the ends of all of your pedals and leaves.

Next, cut your pipe cleaner into 3rds. 

Bend a little kink in the pipe cleaner to catch your leaves and pedals. 

Then start adding them on. 3-4 green then 4-5 red. 

Pinch the pipe cleaner to make it tight then wrap the top in a spiral for the center of your flower. 

Poke the back end right into the round side of your foam ball. 

Place it off to one side as you will need to put at least 3 flowers in each ball. You do not have to push it all the way in. 

When all 3 are on you can place it right on the table!

No watering required!

Climbing Construction Paper Spiders

We love creating crafts that you can play with after! We have quite a few of these climbing spiders hanging on our windows in our home.

It is always the first thing my daughter shows her friends when they come over.  It’s a fun and cute Halloween craft that is perfect for fall!

Supplies for your spider craft:

• Black Construction Paper.
• A Cardboard Tube.
• Yarn or String.
• Hole Punch.
• 2 Beads. You want ones with bigger holes for threading and ones that are bigger than the hole punch.
• Googly Eyes.
• Black Marker.
• Glue Stick.
• Tape.

How to make a Halloween spider

See the whole process in under 2 mins in the video at the end of the post!

Start with creating an oval and 8 legs from your black construction paper.  The oval needs to be large enough to cover your paper tube.

Glue the legs on either side of the body.

Flip the construction paper spider over and add on some googly eyes and a little smile.  Look how cute he is!

Punch 4 holes in the paper tube.  2 holes, across from each other, on both sides.

Cut a long piece of string/yarn.  You can make your string as long as you want, however, the spider will only climb as far as your child can pull the strings apart.

Use a small piece of tape to create a “needle” on one end of the string.  (check out the video below to see how we did it.)

String on one bead and pull all it all the way to one end. Then tie a knot around the bead.

Thread the string through both holes on one end of the tube and then back through the other side.

Finally, add the second bead and tie off that end.

Glue your spider to the front side of the paper tube.

Hang him from the top of the string. Make sure it’s low enough for your kiddo to reach it.

To play, take one bead in each hand and pull out to the sides (not down).

You are sure to have loads of these climbing construction paper spiders all-around your house by Halloween!

Fall Construction Paper Tree

If you have been following along you know we have created this fun 3D tree a few times!

The best part about this craft is it can be recreated so many ways! Green leaves, apples, blossoms, and even bare for winter!

How to make your fall paper tree:

Here is the step by step instructions for a fall construction paper tree. Then watch it all in action in the video below.

Start by cutting your brown paper into a bunch of long strips. You do not need to measure their thickness, just as long as you have one the width you would like to use for your trunk.

Take the trunk strip and cut or tear it in half.

Use your glue stick to attach one-half of the truck to the blue sheet of paper. Set aside the other half of your trunk for later. Now, glue the rest of your strips to the top of your trunk.

Once all of the strips are attached glue on the other side of the trunk to hide and secure all of your branch ends.

Next, start to work your way around the tree branches to attach them to the blue background. Pick up the branch and loop it around twice then attach to the blue paper with glue. Teach your little one to count to 10 while holding the strip down. This way they are nice and secure.

Now it’s time for some leaves. Just grab some paper scraps of your favorite fall colors and cut out a bunch of simple leaves.

Time to start gluing.

It won’t take long until you have a fun fall 3D construction paper tree!

3D Apple Tree Craft

We had a video go bonkers on our Construction Paper Crafts for Kids Facebook page. It is this fun little 3D construction paper tree that is full of possibilities.

You can dress it up for any season or occasion. We did simple green leaves before and on today’s post we are turning it into a fun 3D apple tree craft!

Like many of our projects, this is an easy craft that we’ve snuck some fine motor skill-building into. You will also see your child working on their scissor skills.

You can use these construction paper trees for a variety of reasons. We hung our apple trees on the refrigerator. Here are some other fun ideas.

This tree craft is very simple. But here are some tips to help you along the way.

• If you are making a lot of trees, cut the strips and circles ahead of time.
• You don’t need to measure the thickness of the paper strips. Let your child experiment with thin and thick strips.
• If you do not have a paper cutter or circle punch, you can cut the pieces by hand.
• Making this 3d construction paper tree for autumn instead?  Cut out orange, yellow, and red leaves.  Is it a spring tree you’re looking for?  Create some small construction paper flowers.  Winter is the easiest.  Just leave the branches empty!

How to make 3D construction paper apple trees

This fun 3D apple tree is perfect for back-to-school or apple season.

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• Construction Paper. One sheet of each blue, brown, green, red.
• Glue Stick.

Tools

• Paper Cutter
• 1" Circle Punch
• 1/2" Circle Punch
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Start by cutting your brown paper into a bunch of long strips. You do not need to measure their thickness, just as long as you have one the width you would like to use for your trunk. Take the trunk strip and cut/tear it in half.

7. Using a glue stick, assemble the apples!
8. Trim all of the stems.
9. Glue them to your construction paper tree!

My kids have loved creating fun 3D flowers… Ever since we made rainbow flowers we have done them every possible way you can imagine… except Giant! Until now.

Supplies for giant construction paper flowers:

• Construction Paper. 2 sheets each of Red, Blue, & White.
• Something Circular to Trace. A plate works well.
• Scissors.

• 1.5″ Circle Punch. Or something smaller to trace and cut out.

How to create red, white, and blue paper flowers

These are really quite easy to make. We made ours using colors for the 4th of July, but you can make these any way you like! Watch this quick 2-minute video to see just how easy they are to create!

Step by step patriotic flower tutorial

Start by tracing something to create six large circles. I used a plate. Then cut out the circles and fold each one in half like a taco shell. Use the 1.5-inch circle punch to create a center circle. Line up 2 of the same color pedals across from each other.

Next, start adding in your other pedals. Try to space them as evenly as you can. Glue down your center circle, this will help hold them in place to glue the backside. Flip over your construction paper flower and lift up the back petals and glue them to each other. Once you have worked your way around the whole flower you’re done!

Whether you are decorating for the 4th of July or you want some beautiful flowers for spring decorations these are sure to be a winner. Even younger children can help with a lot of the prep and construction of these!

Paper Quilling Turtle

Paper quilling is one of those crafts that I always see and am amazed by. The beautiful things that can be created from strips of paper leave me in awe.

Did you know that you can use construction paper for quilling? I won’t pretend that this paper quilling technique is going to turn you into an amazing quiller, but your little ones can create some pretty fun pieces of art!

How to create your construction paper turtle

Check out these step by step instructions for creating a quilling turtle out of construction paper. Then watch the video below to see it all in action!

Start by cutting your “turtle colors” into strips.  The size of the turtle you create will determine how many strips you will need. I started with a sheet of each color. Grab a scrap of paper and cut out 4 legs, 1 head, and 1 tail.

Now you need to decide how big of a turtle you want to make. For the smaller turtles, create a circle using one strip of paper. For a larger turtle connect two paper strips together before gluing them into a circle. Trace the circle onto your blue piece of construction paper.

Glue the head, legs, and tail around the circle. Then glue the circle on top of them.
Now for the quilling. Take a strip of paper and wrap it around a craft stick. Hold it tight and slide it off the end.

Dunk it into some white glue and then place it inside your turtle shell. Watching them uncoil a bit is part of the fun. Continue with your quills until your turtle shell is full.

Use a marker to draw on a face. Once the turtles have dried a bit you can trim the edges of your blue paper to look like a pond!

3D Rainbow Art

We have had a new ongoing obsession with rainbow art in our house…

We are constantly singing the colors of the rainbow song over and over… and over.

We’ve made everything from Flowers to Spheres with rainbow construction paper.

When I saw this cute post from Teach Preschool I knew I needed to do something like it with V. She has an amazing tip for gluing with your little ones.

The only problem was V wanted to make a “real rainbow” she wanted that perfect arch.

Since creating a 3d paper rainbow can be challenging for a preschool craft,  we tweaked it a bit.  This 3D rainbow art project is designed to make it easier for her to accomplish the “perfect rainbow”.

• Let your child play around with how they want to apply the glue stick. Some kids like to add the glue to the base, some kids prefer to add it to the paper strip. Both ways work!
• If you are crafting with a large group, you may want to cut all the paper first. Or you can grab our rainbow template to make it super easy!
• The key to making the paper stick is to hold it down for the appropriate amount of time. Have your kids sing a quick song or count to 10.

How to make a rainbow with construction paper

Materials

• Construction Paper. ( A sheet for each color of the rainbow and white)
• Glue Stick

Tools

• Paper Cutter (optional)
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Start by cutting a 1″ strip of each color the long length of the paper. Then line them up; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, starting with red on the bottom leaving about a 1″ gap between each color of the rainbow.
2. Next, flip up the back end and trim off along the red edge. You should be cutting off the most purple, then blue, etc. You will not cut off any red.
3. Now fold the whole end over to create a tab.
4. Even out the other end and fold a tab there as well.
5. Starting building your 3D rainbow art with purple, add glue to your tabs so they fold out from under your arch.
6. Use Teach Preschool’s tip here to make sure to get a good bond! Continue this with each color.
7. V switched halfway through to adding the glue to the paper then pressing her strips into the glue. Whichever way works best for your kiddo!
8. Once you glue on your red strip you’re finished with your 3D rainbow craft!

• To speed up the cutting process, we recommend grabbing a circle punch.
• If you’re not making a rainbow flower, just cut 6 circles from any color you like.  You will need 6 circles to make your construction paper flower.
• Another way to speed up the cutting process, try stacking a few sheets together and cut them at once.
• Try making these paper flowers in all different sizes!  To easily create the smaller flowers, I used a 1″ hole punch. 
• Experiment with different shapes! Try heart-shaped petals or adding a small circle to the middle.

Rainbow Paper Flowers

Print

One of our most popular paper flower crafts. It's simple yet looks super cool! Your kids will be very proud of their creation.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• Construction Paper
• Glue Stick
• Something to trace. (cup, bowl, stencil, or circle punch)
• Template (optional)

Tools

• Scissors
• Pen or marker

Instructions

1. Trace and cut out 6 circles from your construction paper. One circle for each color of the rainbow. (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). Or use our printable template.
2. Take and fold each circle in half and crease well.  They will look like little tacos.
3. Place some glue on one side of your folded circle (aka taco). Then place the half circle onto a piece of paper. Next, take the opposite color, from the color wheel, and place it across from your first pedal.  Be sure that the open sides of your half circles are pointing away from each other. So red across from green, blue across from orange, and yellow across from purple. This will help you space out your pedals.
4. Fill in with the rest of the colors in ‘rainbow order’. Red, orange,  yellow, green, blue, purple, and you’re done!
5. You can add a stem with a green marker to add a fun touch. Try making these paper flowers in all different sizes!
