How to decorate a pumpkin with fabric

Check out these step by step instruction for our fabric pumpkin craft, then watch it all in action in the video below!

You can mix and match your fabric however you want to create this fun fabric pumpkin. To create our larger pumpkin we went with 2 fun teal patterns and smaller solid teal squares.

Start by applying a coat of Modge Podge to your pumpkin. Add one of your fabric squares and then cover with more Modge Podge. Use vertical strokes to get out any air bubbles and to remove any excess Modge Podge.

Layer your squares to create whatever pattern or design you like!

You might find you have a few frayed edges. I pulled mine straight up and down.

I liked the way it looked. You could easily trim these off if you don’t care for them. To see this process in action watch this short video!

The past few years we have had one out, and this year is no exception! In fact, we will have a few because they have been a lot of fun to create!

Today I’m sharing a fun and simple technique the kids can help out on. You could make these tissue paper pumpkins in any color you like to match your holiday decor too!

Supplies for your teal pumpkin craft

White Pumpkin. I used a few different pumpkins and they all worked well.
Teal Tissue Paper.
Hole Punches. I used a few different sizes.
Modge Podge.
Foam Brush.

How to make a tissue paper teal pumpkin

Check out these step by step instructions and then watch it all in action in the video below!

Start by punching holes out of the tissue paper.

This might not be as simple as punching out regular paper…maybe I used too many pieces of tissue paper, but a few times I would have to pull the paper to get the last bit out.

Since we will be layering our circles it doesn’t hurt the end result if a few aren’t perfect.

Once you have a handful of dots it’s time to start applying some Modge Podge to your pumpkin. Lay a dot down and add a bit more Modge Podge to the top.

Space your dots apart first then go in with your next set and layer them. It will give a darker tone the more layers of dots you lay.

I worked from larger dots at the top to smaller ones at the bottom on my large pumpkin.

When you are happy with the look set it to the side to dry!

You can mix up the tissue paper pumpkin and make a pattern around the center, dots from the bottom up, or even cover your whole pumpkin!

White Pumpkin. As you can see I have one large one and 2 smaller pumpkins. They all had completely different textures and all worked great!
Teal Acrylic Paint.
Foam Brush.
Cheap Cloth. Paper towels can work too.
Little Dish of Water.

How To Create Your Painted Pumpkin Idea

This teal painted plastic pumpkin is one of those projects you have to see in motion. I will give you the quick step-by-step instructions, but the make sure to watch the video below!

Start off by painting a section of your pumpkin using your foam brush. Make sure to get down in the grooves!

Next, get your cloth damp, not soaked, and wipe off your pumpkin in a vertical motion.

Continue your way around the pumpkin, don’t forget the bottom!

This pumpkin themed fine motor activity is great because not only do you get some super cute pumpkins that you can hang in the window, but your child is working on their fine motor skills too!

How to make your Fine Motor Pumpkins

Check out the fun video after the step by step instructions!

Have your little one draw a small green oval on the clear side of your contact paper. Then they can draw their pumpkin outline (you can help them with this if they are younger.)

Next, punch a bunch of holes out of orange and green construction paper.

Then peel off the backing from your contact paper and place it on your surface, sticky side up. Use tape to secure it. Place the dots inside the shapes. They don’t have to touch and it’s ok for them to go over the edge! Let them enjoy this process.

Then place the second sheet of contact paper on top. Sandwiching the dots in the middle. Cut out your pumpkin and create a stem from your green oval. Attach the stem to the pumpkin with a bit of glue and you’re done!

These look great in the window, the sun shines right through! This pumpkin-themed fine motor activity makes a great suncatcher you can leave up the whole season!

How to make a fun pumpkin totem pole perfect for Halloween

Create an amazing plastic pumpkin totem pole for your front porch. Turn inexpensive plastic pumpkins into Halloween decorations that wow!

You know those bright and cheap plastic pumpkins you always see at the store? The pumpkin pails that are only about $1 apiece?

What if I told you that you can turn those fake pumpkins into an amazing plastic pumpkin totem Pole?!

I am a huge fan of quick and easy decorations. The idea of having to store large decorations for an entire year is not appealing. While this one isn’t quite as cheap as the Spiderweb Wreath, it won’t hurt your wallet and can be created in an afternoon.

You can leave it up all season, and then toss it when the snow starts falling.

How to weather fake pumpkins.

You don’t need much ink to weather your pumpkins. Usually, one dip of the brush can cover the whole thing.
Paint in vertical strokes and make sure to add the ink all the way up the rim of the plastic pumpkin.
Don’t forget to place something heavy in the bottom pumpkin.
Add lights to the pumpkins so people can see them all day and all night!

Assembling your DIY stacked pumpkins

Below is our step by step tutorial for creating these stacked pumpkins. Feel free to print it for easy reference.

How to make a fun pumpkin totem pole perfect for Halloween

This is such a great activity for Halloween!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Active Time 20 minutes

Total Time 25 minutes

Difficulty Medium

Materials

Cheap plastic pumpkins handle removed.
Black ink.
Damp paper towels.
Some sort of weight. (I used a refilled water bottle)

Tools

Foam Brush
Hot glue gun and glue.
Craft Knife

Instructions

How to weather fake pumpkins:

If you don't want your pumpkin pails to be weathered, you can skip this and go straight to building your pumpkin totem pole. However, I love the way they look weathered...

Pour yourself a little bit of the black ink, have your foam brush handy, and a few dampened paper towels. You want the paper towels wet, but not dripping.
Start by painting with your ink down the creases of the pumpkin. Then add a light coat over the whole thing.
Once your pumpkin pail is covered, immediately take your damp paper towel and wipe off most of the ink. Use a downward swipe from the top to bottom. Work your way around the entire pumpkin.
Then start the next pumpkin!

Assembling your DIY stacked pumpkins

Play around with the color order of your pumpkins until you like your stack.

Place something heavy in the bottom pumpkin. We refilled a used water bottle and threw it in there. If you are placing yours somewhere that might get a lot of the wind you could add a few bricks.
As you stack your pumpkins add a few beads of hot glue around the seam where the two pumpkins meet. Again, depending on the location of the decoration is how much glue you will want to use.
Finally, find a good spot for your weathered plastic pumpkin totem pole! Since my kiddos are still pretty young we don't do too many scary Halloween decorations so this works out perfect for our family.

This thing is seriously cute!

How to add lights to your pumpkin totem pole

This was My Man’s idea so I have to give him credit…

Using an Exacto knife, I cut an X in the bottom 5 of the 6 pumpkins. Then one whole out the back of the one at the base.
Add in some white lights and bingo… It glows at night!

Halloween is fast approaching. We love a simple activity that has loads of ways to play. This printable Jack O Lantern template was one of our first printables, but it’s still a favorite.

It started as just a felt pattern. But our kids showed us that there was more than one way to play.

If you’re just prepping for Halloween, don’t worry! You can pin it to your favorite Pinterest board and come back when you’re ready!

Pumpkin template for preschoolers

There are at least 3 ways to play with this free jack-o-lantern template.

1. Create a felt jack-o-lantern

You can create an interactive felt Jack-o-lantern. All you will need are 4 Pieces of felt (1 orange, 1 yellow, 1 black, & 1 background color), fabric glue, tape, & scissors.

Use your Jack-O-Lantern Printable as a template to cut out your shapes, attach with a tape roll to your felt, and cut out. Attach the shapes together with some fabric glue so they are reversible. Let dry overnight. Mama K created this fun felt background for our kiddos. Just take the glass out of a frame and replace it with a piece of felt!

2. Create a construction paper jack o lantern

While the felt pieces were drying I realized that J had been playing with the paper pieces for a while. So for quicker play, you can print the jack-o-lantern template onto colored cardstock or construction paper. Cut out pieces and play!

3. Design your own Jack-0-Lantern

Last J decided to use the pumpkin outline as a jack-o-lantern design sheet. Instruct your little one to either trace the shapes through the paper or draw on anything their imagination desires!!

The best part is you can print it as many times as you want! Ready to get your printable?
