How to Make Giant 3D Rainbow Paper Flowers

Cut 1″ (or wider) paper strips in rainbow colors and an additional green paper strip for a flower stem. 

Using a giant hole punch, cut a circle from black construction paper. We used a 1.25″ circle puncher. It’s important for the circle to be wider than the paper strips. 

 Align the paper strips and punch holes on both sides. On 2nd the green paper strip punch only one hole for the top part where it connects with the petals. Punch a hole in the middle of the black circle as well.

Place the black circle on top of the stacked rainbow strips and thread a pipe cleaner through. Flip the flower over and thread through the second hole to form the flower petals.

Add the green paper strip for a stem. Coil the pipe cleaner on top of the black circle. Flip and secure the pipe cleaner on the back of the flower. Cut any extra pipe cleaner using scissors. 

Place a piece of white construction paper on the table. Apply glue to the back of the stem. Glue it onto the white paper.

Fold the bottom of the green paper strip, apply glue, and glue to the paper. This will form a leaf. Separate and arrange rainbow paper strips to form a flower head.

How To Make Easy Rainbow Paper Flowers

Start by cutting construction paper into 0.5-inch strips. Make at least one strip from each color of the rainbow. 

Stack all the paper strips and align them. Cut them in half. You can make 2 flowers from one paper strip length. 

Stack and align paper strips again. Punch holes on each end of the strips. 

Fold a pipe cleaner in half. Make a little piece in the middle flat. This will help us to stop paper strips from sliding off paper cleaner. 

Push the pipe cleaner through one of the holes of each of the paper strips. Follow the order of the colors on the rainbow. 

Now thread the pipe cleaner through the second hole. Reverse the order and start with last paper strip you added. Repeat with all paper strips. 

Fold the pipe cleaner into a circle to form a center of the flower. This will also help keep paper strips in place.

To finish these rainbow paper daisies, spread the petals and arrange them with approximately similar space inbetween.

Tips for making these circle flowers

• If you are crunched for time, you could cut the circles ahead of time and let your child cut the petals, and glue the layers together.
• Instead of making rainbow flowers, let your kids pick out different colors or alternate between two colors.
• Try using different shapes. How does this project look with square flowers or triangles? Let your kids experiment.
• When bending the flowers, it helps to hold the center of the circle. If little fingers can’t make this work, you might try holding it for your child as they bend the paper.

How to make beautiful Kandinsky Inspired Rainbow Flowers

These rainbow flowers are inspired by the painter Wassily Kandinsky, this construction paper craft is perfect for young children.

Materials

• Construction Paper (One sheet for each color of the rainbow)
• White Cardstock
• White Glue
• Buttons

Tools

• Scissors

Instructions

1. Start with the purple paper and cut the first circle freehand. Then cut little slits to form the petals.
2. Glue the purple circle on top of the blue paper using a glue stick. Cut the blue paper into a circle, leaving enough space to cut petals in the blue paper.  Repeat this step of gluing and cutting the remaining papers in order to form a rainbow: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
3. After you’re finished, make a second flower in the same way, only with reversed colors. This time, make the smallest circle red and the largest purple.
4. Fold petals a little bit to add dimension. Hold the center of the flower to make folding easier.
5. Pick a button and, using white glue, glue it in the center of the flower. 
6. Cut green paper strips for stems. Glue the stems onto white paper along with the rainbow paper flowers to finish this simple paper flower craft for kids.

How to make paper flowers and build fine motor skills for preschoolers

Using a paper cutter, cut 0.5-inch wide paper strips. You will need at least one paper strip from each of the colors of the rainbow to make a single flower.

Pick all the paper strips and align them. Punch a hole on each end through all the stacked paper strips making sure holes are aligned on individual paper strips. 

Take a pipe cleaner, fold it in half. Flatten a little piece in the middle of the pipe cleaner to form an end of the stem. It will help stop the paper strips from sliding to the end of the pipe cleaner. 

Slide the pipe cleaner through both holes of each paper strip. Start with orange and follow the order of the colors on the rainbow until you finish threading all paper strips.

Use one half of the pipe cleaner to form a flower’s receptacle. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the bottom of the flower and flatten as you go. 

Using paper strips in different length, you can create differently sized rainbow flowers. For smaller flowers, use shorter paper strips. For bigger paper flowers, use longer paper strips.

Fidget Spinner Rainbows

Have your kids collected a few fidget spinners? They seem to sell them everywhere and unless your child needs one they are probably collecting dust or stuck in your couch cushions. I, however, refuse to just let them go to waste. We have used them to make fireworks and some fun watercolor art and today we are creating fun fidget spinner rainbows!

Supplies for your Fidget Spinner Art:

• A Fidget Spinner. One with a hole on the ends.
• One Pipe Cleaner.
• Paint.
• Pallete.
• Paper.

Creating your Hand Spinner Art

Thread your pipe cleaner through one of the ends of your fidget spinner. Pinch it off and twist it tight. Then twist loosely the rest of the way. Fold the end up to give yourself a handle. On your palette place a dab of each color right next to each other. Place your pipe cleaner in the paint.

Hold down your spinner securely with one finger and with the other swing the pipe cleaner back and forth to create your rainbow! The more times you do it the looser your pipe cleaner might become. We found after a few we had to press it down with our hands or adjust the pipe cleaner.

There is no perfect way to do it. You don’t even have to use rainbow colors… You can do half circles or full circles. Just Create!

If there is one thing I can always fall back on with my little one it’s coloring. Since we have been loving all things rainbow lately why not create a fun rainbow booklet! Just print, fold, & cut. You can assemble them quickly then pass them off to your little one to fill in the pages! We have made about 5 of our Dad books for Father’s Day this year… and we are catching up quickly with these fun rainbow booklets.

• Free Printable.
• Rainbow Colors. Markers, pencils, or crayons.

How to fold your paper booklet:

You can watch the video to see how to assemble the book, or head here for picture directions.

Once you have your book assembled hand it over! Your little one can start by coloring the front rainbow or wait and leave that for the finishing touch. Each page inside is a prompt to draw something of each color of the rainbow.

When they are finished be ready to have them read you their color story. I know I have heard V’s quite a few times. It’s fun to see what they think of for each color. From yellow lollipops, blue blueberries, and really curly snakes, they will have fun creating this rainbow booklet all on their own.

You could also take this booklet outside and find things in nature to tape to each page!

Splatter Paint

When we finished our rainbow painted rocks we found that the drippings left under the rocks were the beginning of a fantastic process art project! We had some leftover paint so we took to the grass and had some fun!

Supplies for your splatter paint process art:

• Paints. Any color you like!
• Water.
• Pipettes.
• Paper. The bigger the better!
• Paint Dishes.

Creating rainbow pipette art

As with most process art projects, there are no rules here… I do have a few tips to get you started and then let your little one take the lead. First, make sure to water down your paints until you can easily suck it in and squeeze it out of your pipette.  I start with a 2:1 ratio of paint to water.Also, start with each color having their own pipette. Head to somewhere that you don’t mind getting messy… and wear paint approved clothes.Now let them go! They can squirt large amounts of paint… or even just tiny sprays. They can fling the paint leaving large streaks and even play around with how many pipettes they can squeeze at once! The best part is they get to experiment and see all the different patterns that can be created. When they are nearing the end they may even dump the paint, and that’s OK. Since the paints are watered down you don’t need to use much to get them started. You can always add more to extend the play.

Rock painting, hiding, hunting…. it is getting bigger all across the country! I love to paint rocks, but my daughter wasn’t “loving” hers as much as mine. When we got out all the paints, her rocks would end up looking muddy because she wanted to use all of the colors of the rainbow. If you have a younger child that that enjoys stone painting, you need to check out this fun drip technique!

Supplies for your stone painting:

• Rocks. (rinsed and dried)
• Paints. Every color of the rainbow.
• Pipettes. One per color.
• Water.
• Paint Dishes. We used an egg carton which was perfect for holding all the different colors.
• A Drying Rack. Not 100% necessary, but helps the rocks from sticking to the paper.
• Scrap Paper. To catch the drips!
• Clear Acrylic Spray.

Rainbow painted rocks instructions:

Start by setting up all your supplies! Squirt a bit of paint into your container and water it down. About a 2:1 ratio of paint to water. Mix it well and squeeze it in and out of your pipette a few times to make sure it is thin enough to squirt back out. I only mixed one color at a time. So start with red. Once there is red on each rock mix up your orange with a new pipette! Work your way through the rainbow until each stone has a bit of every color. Using these pipettes is great fine motor practice and they can really control where the paint goes once they get the hang of it! When the painted rocks are “perfect” let them dry completely in the shade. If you want to hide them or keep them long term, spray the painted rocks with a clear coat. She loved her rainbow rocks and was very excited to hide them!

Spinning Heart Mobile

Do your little ones ever get stuck on something… a favorite shirt or show? Well, right now my youngest is loving all things rainbow! We have been creating a lot of rainbow crafts for kids lately to keep up with this newfound favorite and this craft isn’t a bad one to have to hang around.

Supplies for your Rainbow Mobile:

• Construction Paper. Every color of the rainbow.
• Paper Cutter.
• String.
• Glue. White glue or a glue stick, both would work.
• String.
• Stapler.
• Clothes Pins or Paper Clips.

Rainbow art step by step instructions

The process we use for this heart mobile has been used in the past. Check out our shamrocks, turkeys, and even something for mom. It’s a fun little craft that can be simple once you get the hang of it!

Start by cutting yourself paper strips. You need two strips of two different lengths for two different sized hearts.

Secure with clothespins or paper clips until dry. You can place multiple hearts on the same string. Once they are dry remove clothespins and hang your heart mobile!
