Square Cutting activity for preschoolers

Print

This fun craft works on scissor skills while incorporating primary colors and the square shape!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Additional Time 10 minutes

Total Time 15 minutes

Materials

• Construction Paper - Red, Yellow, & Blue
• Cardstock - White or Black

Tools

• Pre-Cut Cardboard Square or Ruler
• Glue Stick
• Pencil
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Start by cutting a piece of cardstock in half.
2. On one half, trace your cardboard square or use a ruler to create a square.
3. Lightly bend the paper in half, pinching inside of the square to cut a slit.
4. From that slit cut out to the outer edge of the square.
5. Finish cutting out the square.
6. Use half sheets of construction paper to start cutting paper strips.
7. Start gluing the paper strips onto the second half of cardstock.
8. Glue the cut-out square sheet of paper, pencil mark side down, onto the paper strips.
9. Trim around the outer edge.

• You need to use at least 2 cuts creating 3 sections to your circles. However, you can make the project more challenging with more slices.
• You can play around with the size of your circles!

Using primary colors, create these fun mini broken circles. Mix and match your puzzle-like pieces to find a good balance between all 3 colors.

Materials

• Construction Paper. Red, Blue & Yellow
• Sheet of White Paper

Tools

• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Circle Shape

Instructions

1. Stack the 3 colors of paper, trace a circle onto the top sheet. Then cut them out together.

2. While holding your circle stack cut the circles into at least 3 pieces.

3. Pick one part of the circle, in each color, to glue down to your white paper. Making sure to leave space for completed circles.

4. Play around with your remaining circle pieces to create all 3 circles.

5. You can leave a small amount of white paper showing through as you glue all of your pieces down.

6. When finished you will have 3 fun broken circles created out of your primary colors.

Use construction paper to create this primary color spinner craft! Mix 2 colors at a time to introduce the idea of secondary colors.

Materials

• Construction Paper - Sheet of Red, Blue, and Yellow
• Yarn

Tools

• Circle Shape to Trace.
• Pencil
• Glue Stick
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Trace circles onto the construction paper. You will need 6 circles of each color to make all 3 spinners.
2. Cut out all of your primary color circles.
3. Separate the circles. For one spinner you will need 2 colors and 3 circles for each color.
4. Fold all of your circles in half. Like tacos!
5. Glue all of your half circles together into a stack. Alternating between colors.
6. Add more glue on the flat side of your color stack and center the yarn on the glue.
7. Add glue to the outer half circles and pinch them all together.
8. Fan out your circle to create a sphere.
9. Grab both ends of yarn and twist to see the colors start to blend together.
10. Repeat with the rest of your color combinations to create 3 fun primary color spinners.

These fun paper snakes wiggle just like the real thing! This craft combines working on fine motor skills with the fun of working with primary colors.

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• Construction Paper - We are using a sheet of all 3 primary colors; red, yellow, and blue. You can do it in any color you like. Cut into 1 inch strips. 2 of each color.
• 2 Pipe Cleaners
• Tape

Tools

• Scissors
• Paper Cutter (optional for cutting paper strips)
• Hole Punch
• Black Marker
• Glue Stick

Instructions

1. Take each strip of paper and fold it accordion style.
2. Pick one strip to leave the last part unfolded. Later this will be your snake's head.
3. Punch a hole in the center of each folded strip. Make sure that you do not punch a hole through the one unfolded end (the head)
4. Add a small red paper strip for a tongue and eyes using a marker to your snake's head.
5. Twist the ends of your 2 pipe cleaners together to create an extra-long pipe cleaner.
6. Starting with the head, begin adding the paper strips to the pipe cleaner. Secure the end of the pipe cleaner to the underside of the head using a piece of tape.
7. Continue adding your paper strips securing them together with a glue stick.
8. When you get to the last paper strip use the pipe cleaner to pinch the end.
9. Now you can bend and twist your snake to play or attach to anything!

Yellow Foods List

1. Pineapple Rings.

Grab a can of pineapple rings. Blot off the extra juice and dust with some cinnamon sugar. Serve them whole or in smaller slices

2. Yellow Veggies and Ranch

I used yellow carrots, tomatoes, and peppers. Tip for picking out bell peppers: female peppers are sweeter. Look for 4 bumps on the bottom. These are better for eating raw.

3. Cornbread and Honey

Head to the bakery and find a loaf or giant muffins to cut up for the kiddos.

4. Lemon Jell-O Jigglers

These fun little treats are sure to be a favorite. Just mix one standard box of Jello into 1 cup boiling water. Pour into a small glass container and chill for at least 4 hours. To keep the portions small use a small cookie cutter, or raid the playdoh toys for small shapes! You use a lot less water to make them jigglers so keep that in mind when picking how much to make.

5. Tortilla chips with melted cheese

Yellow corn chips topped with some delicious melted cheddar or American cheese.

6. Bananas

Just cut up a banana for a quick yellow snack.

7. Banana pudding

Whip up a batch of banana pudding. Yum!

8. Lemons

This tart snack will test your preschooler’s tastebuds. Don’t forget to grab a picture of the pucker.

9. Lemonade

Wash down the yellow snacks with some lemonade.

10. Sweet Corn

Cut it off the cob, or let the kids nibble it as is!

11. Hard-Boiled Eggs

The yellow yolk may not be their favorite part of the hard-boiled egg. But at least it’s teaching them about the color!

12. Lemon Bars

Find a delicious lemon bar recipe or pick some up from your local bakery.

13. Yellow Raisins

These golden yellow raisins are a fun preschool snack.

Grab a bag of blue corn chips and pair it with queso. You can whip up some non-spicey queso by combining 1 slice of white American cheese to every 2oz of heavy cream. Warm slowly adding the cheese one slice at a time.
