How to make DIY Minecraft Bricks out of Cardboard

If you know anything about the game of Minecraft you would know that it all starts with a single brick. The whole game is made of them. Making DIY Minecraft Bricks was a challenge, but I knew we needed them to bring the game to life.

What you need for you DIY Minecraft Bricks:

Cardboard.
Box cutter, with a good blade.
Graph paper.
Cardstock. Any color.
Ruler.
Exacto knife.
Pen or pencil.
Paint roller.
Square edged paintbrush.
Paints. All of the bricks have a few shades of gray. Then depending on the bricks you want you can add in more colors to your list. Diamond you need blues, gold yellows, etc.

Making your DIY Minecraft Bricks:

These can be cobblestone, gold, iron, coal, wood, or any other blocks.

***Disclaimer*** These were a labor of love, but they were great!!
To get this pixelated look I created a template using graph paper.

My blocks (cardboard squares) were 9″ x 9″ a piece. To translate to graph paper each inch square will be a pixel.
This was not a specific pattern, I just chose to do 4 shades of gray (cobblestone). As my base for all blocks.

Tape a piece of cardstock under your graph paper. Using your Xacto knife start cutting out all of your #1 squares.

Then remove the card stock and you have your first template.

Add a new piece of cardstock and cut out all of the #2s. Then your second template is finished.

etc.
You will end up with 4 templates.
Once you are done paint all of your blocks a solid dark gray.
Create a lighter gray by mixing in some white. Then lay down a template and paint.

Alternate templates and change colors of gray until your happy with your results.

I worked with one template for awhile until it was feeling flimsy from all of the paint. Then I would switch to another. Once the paint dried the template was stiff again and I could use for another shade of gray.

Once you have worked your way through all of the templates on each brick you could be done! If you wanted cobblestone.

But for our party needs, I needed specific bricks. For this, using a square edged brush, I added in a few pixels of yellow for gold, blue for diamond, black for coal, tans for iron, etc. Mix in different shades of each color to complete the effect.

These worked perfectly for pulling off our activity. The kids were tucking them under their arms as they walked out the door.

How to make a DIY Minecraft Pickaxe out of Cardboard

I had been very busy creating lots of props for J’s Minecraft party. I had this great idea to bring the game to life and I needed quite a few items to pull it off. I created these DIY Minecraft Pickaxes out of wood. It is one of the first items you can make in the game. They weren’t too hard to pull off and they definitely helped pull it all together!

What you need to make your own DIY Minecraft Pickaxes:

Cardboard.
Pen or marker.
Ruler.
Box cutter, with a fresh blade.
Brown paint. Also either black or white to make a second shade of brown.
Square edged paintbrush and a paint roller. The roller is optional but really speeds up the process.

Making your DIY Minecraft Pickaxes:

I did not have a foam pickaxe to copy so I used a picture from online and my sword edge to create the outline. Just think of pixels when you are making your design. Use a ruler to make all of the edges straight. Then cut out. Use your first pickaxe to trace the rest.

Time to get painting. We only painted these 2-toned. We were making them wooden for the activity. You could always add more detail or make them diamond or iron if you wanted to.

I made J do most of the work on these. We started by doing the whole base in 2 coats of brown. Then with the square edge brush added in a bit more detail. Add these into the mix of party favors and these boys were all in heaven!

Now, these details aren’t exact. I just freehanded on the darker brown. They did their job of pulling together the game.

DiY MINECRAFT Torches

While a lot of the set up for this party was time-consuming. These DIY Minecraft Torches were not! They were my favorite thing that I made. I wish I had made enough that each kid could take home their own Minecraft Torch, but I didn’t have enough candles… I have actually made these a few times since!

In the game of Minecraft, one of the first things you need before it gets dark is to put up a few torches. These torches actually lit up enough to use them in our activity! They make great decorations as well as an excellent prop for a fun activity and another fun item that the kids could take home as a party favor.

What you need to make your own DIY Minecraft Torches:

Cardboard.
Box cutter.
Paint. Brown, Yellow, & White.
Square edged paintbrush.
Fake tealights.
Hot glue gun and glue.
Rubber bands.

Making your DIY Minecraft Torch:

Start with a 6″x 10″ piece of cardboard. A flap off of an Amazon box works great! Score every 1.5″ (cut but not all the way through)

Fold into shape then unfold again to paint.

You can paint these free hand using a square brush. They don’t need too much detail. Just give them a brown base coat. Then a few lighter and darker brown squares. Next, alternate shades of yellow along the tops. Make sure the top is a square shape.

Run a long bead of hot glue along the seam and attach quickly. Hot glue starts to dry fast.

Use a few rubber bands to secure together while they dry.

For the final touch add in a tealight. (a fake one)

They will fit snug, you will not need to attach them. This way you can take them in and out to turn the flame on and off.

I think Little Miss was trying to blow this one out.

If I could go back in time these would have been used to decorate my cake table and posted up on the walls. These kids loved to take them home.

How to make DIY Minecraft Swords from cardboard

Create amazing DIY Minecraft Swords with cardboard boxes. These make amazing Minecraft party decorations or party favors. They are perfect for make-believe play or to add the final touch to a Minecraft Halloween costume.

DIY Minecraft Swords

Do you have a Minecraft fan at home? They keep adding more and more to the game which is constantly sparking J’s interest.

I created these DIY Minecraft Swords for his Minecraft birthday party and they were a hit! I will not lie they were a labor of love. However, the excitement of the boys when I told them they got to keep it made it worth every minute!

Now, these DIY Minecraft swords can be used in so many ways. They could be used as decorations, gifts for the kids, or as part of an activity. We used them for all 3!

What you need to make your own cardboard Minecraft Swords:

Cardboard.
A foam Minecraft Sword.
A box cutter. (Make sure to have a fresh blade)
A marker.
Paints. Colors depend on what kind of swords you are making.
Square edge paintbrush.

How to make Minecraft swords:

Grab your box cutter, a fresh blade, and a marker.
Like most Minecraft lovers J had one of these foam swords that I traced. If you do not have a foam sword to trace you would have to work out a template sword. Since all of the lines are straight and work off of a standard square this is possible, time-consuming, but possible.

Cut out your sword, do it again, and again, and again… I mentioned in the first party post this was a labor of love!!

Time to start painting!! Choose what kind of Minecraft sword you want to make. Diamond, gold, iron, stone, or even wood!! Start with the middle color.

Using another sword as a guide, add your next layer. You are only painting single squares here so you don’t have to go to the edge.

Both sides.

Repeat this process for the outside edge.

Using the scraps and the other swords to help guide your painting will save you loads of time.

Make sure you have a square-edged paintbrush. It will make things a LOT less frustrating! You can pull up images online to help you with doing the handles. There are images everywhere!

Finish up by painting the rest of the handle brown. The kids loved their DIY Minecraft swords and it made a great party favor. I did a variety of sword types because I used them in our Minecraft party activity. You could easily do all diamond or all iron etc.

DiY Minecraft Mini Figure Storage

If you have a Minecraft fan in your house you know about the Endless amount of toys that go along with the game. J’s newest obsession is collecting these little Mini Figures. Of course, I couldn’t stand having them all lying around, so this DIY Minecraft Mini-Figure Storage creation was made!!!

We all know that these Mini Figures are marketing gold. They come in mystery packs for $3 a piece, and the kids don’t even know what they are buying! On top of that, you can buy a case to display them in… for $20-$50. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of these little figurines, my son earns his own money and can spend it ~~as foolishly~~ as he pleases.

After researching the storage cases I realized I would just have to come up with a way to make a some sort of Minecraft mini figure storage myself. I don’t know how long he will be collecting them, but I do know that is too much money to spend on a case.

What you need to make your own DiY Minecraft Mini Figure Storage:

A Lid. Size depends on how many of these suckers you have lying around the house.
Toilet Paper Tubes or Paper Towel Tubes. The more the better!
White Glue.
Hot Glue.
A Piece of Cardboard.
Spray Paint.

How to make your DIY Minecraft Mini-Figure Storage:

First, cut your tubes. A toilet paper tube into 3rds or paper towel tube into 6ths. They do not have to be perfect. Some of the characters are bigger than others so the staggering sizes worked well for the stand… and my sanity.Now, using white glue, start gluing them in! I did a layer of glue on the bottom and sides then slid the tubes into place so it would coat the whole edge.Continue this until the whole lid is full. Then let it sit to dry under a fan or over night.Create a base using a rectangle piece of cardboard that is bigger than the side of your lid. Use hot glue to attach it, this will make it much more stable. Then give it a few coats of paint. Just like J’s Lego mini figure stand, he requested black.

Next he added in all of his little mini figures…Ta-Da! His very own Minecraft mini figure storage…All together my version of Minecraft mini figure storage cost about $5, for glue and spray paint (which I have leftovers of both). He was happy, I was happy, and now all of his little mini figures are happy in their new home.

MINECRAFT Party Activity ~ Bringing the Game to Life

We have prepped for our Minecraft party and served up our Minecraft food, now it was time for the main event… I will admit I have a few hours of MINECRAFT under my belt and from the start, I knew exactly what I wanted the MINECRAFT Party Activity to be. A real life Minecraft game!

After a lot of MINECRAFT Crafting, I had all of the props necessary to pull off this epic Minecraft party activity.

If your kiddos play the game, but you aren’t too familiar with how it works, you have to accomplish W, X, & Y to get to Z…. Makes sense right?

The whole mission is for the kids to get a MINECRAFT Sword to Kill some Spiders to win souvenirs.

Just like in the beginning of the game they start with nothing. They must collect a piece of wood from the decorations.

I had a few of these trees around the house. The tops were green tissue paper.

At the crafting table (which my Man took care of) they received their pickaxe.

Using their Pickaxe they go out in search of some coal. You can place this as decor anywhere in your house. (I had some on the sides of my cupboards)

With their piece of coal, they return to the crafting table to get their torches.

With their torches in hand, they head off into the mine to find some ore.

I set up my mine in the garage, any room that can get nice and dark will work. I used cardboard and extra paint from making my blocks to section off an area right inside the door. I added the different ores randomly along the wall.

I also added an Endermen just for fun.

With their torches in hand, they couldn’t tell which ore they had until they came out of the dark.

They returned to the crafting table with their ores and received their swords.

Now onto the final step to this Minecraft party activity. Getting their prizes!!

The spiders were black balloons with red tape for eyes and crepe paper legs.

Inside each balloon was a MINECRAFT Bracelet. (it was interesting getting them in there, but possible!)

We had the spiders everywhere around the house and the boys went crazy on them!

My house was covered in spider legs within seconds!!

From start to finish the boys loved every second! They all got to keep their Pickaxe, Torch, Sword, and Bracelets. They were even shoving blocks from the walls under their arms on the way out the door! (Less clean up for me)

It was a major success… Worth every minute I spent tracing, cutting, painting… J will always remember this birthday. His friends will too!

MINECRAFT Munchies ~ Snacks, Desserts, a MINECRAFT Cake & More

What’s a Minecraft party without Minecraft party food? And what’s a MINECRAFT party without blocks? Our party was in the late afternoon so I decided on munchies and dessert. I wanted everything to go along with the pixel/block theme.

Everything that the kiddos ate was cut into cute little blocks. I have to credit Grandma K and Aunt Kate for helping out with these… My Man’s prime rib dinner and a few glasses of wine assisted with the persuasion.

Minecraft Party Food – Munchies

Meat & Cheese

Ham & Cheddar

Veggies

Carrots & Cucumbers

Fruit

Pineapple & Cantaloupe

To get all of these foods into these cute little cubes did take some time…

A few quick tips.

I bought cheese sticks from the store and cut them to a cube shape. Everything else we cut to that size.

At the deli she took a cheese stick to match thickness to a slice of ham, this made it easier to cube the correct size.

For the veggies, just peel to square edges and cube.

We did end up with some scraps, I just saved them and used later on top of a few salads.

Minecraft Party Food – Dessert

Keeping with the block theme I decided to make individual desserts and a mini MINECRAFT cake for J to have candles on. You have to have candles to blow out on your birthday!!

I wanted the kiddos to have an option so we went with these two.

Dirt aka Chocolate

These started with a brownie bite at the bottom,

a layer of homemade chocolate pudding (Martha’s instructions here),

and topped with crushed cream-filled organic chocolate cookies, cream removed prior to crushing. (Using a knife… not your tongue.)

Sand aka Vanilla

These started with a yellow cake bite at the bottom

and then a layer of homemade vanilla pudding (Martha’s instructions here),

and topped with crushed cream-filled organic vanilla cookies, cream removed prior to crushing.

(Again, fight the temptation and use a knife… Not Your Tongue!)

***Side note, the homemade pudding was easy to make and sooooo good!!!

MINECRAFT Cake

In MINECRAFT you can make a cake.

In the game, you need milk, wheat, sugar, and an egg. Now that’s my type of cake! Sounds like a pretty clean list of ingredients to me 🙂

Anyways, I did cheat a little (hey I had a lot on my plate) I bought a Trader Joe box cake mix. Made it in a square pan per the instructions.

It puffed up in the middle, but I cut it and placed them opposite so when stacked it made a perfect cube.

I made some homemade vanilla frosting (this is the Best recipe ever)

Then I cut out some red squares. This was necessary to make it look just like the cake on MINECRAFT…

I didn’t let J eat the squares, they were edible, but that’s a matter of opinion…

Minecraft Party food – Beverages

A final touch on the table was a quick and easy addition.

When you buy your cups get the ‘coffee’ cups. This way they are easier to color on faces with a sharpie marker.

Simply cut out a pattern on one cup…

Put it over another cup…

Color it in…

Ta Da!! This one can be done while relaxing on the couch!

Seeing Pixels ~ A MINECRAFT Themed Birthday Party!

Like most kids, J is into Minecraft. I have to admit that I am too. So naturally we had a Minecraft party this year! I can’t wait to share all the details! This Minecraft themed party was by far one of the best I have ever thrown! From the Minecraft cake to the Minecraft party game won’t soon be forgotten!

Well, it happened… My baby boy turned 7!! Seven. How that happened, I have no idea…I remember him eating his 1st birthday cake like it was yesterday. As he has gotten older the parties have become more fun to plan. Now that he has friends from school involved, I try to make sure that it is fun and memorable for them all.

Now planning a perfect Minecraft themed birthday party does not have to break the bank. There are so many things you can easily do to create fun decorations, creative food, and a memorable activity that will have your birthday kiddo and guests wondering how you pulled it off.

I am still seeing Pixels after the prep that went into this party! I mean just think squares… square food, square plates, square invitations… you get it!

Some of the Minecraft party decorations would classify under “labor of love” category but didn’t cost much to do.

However ,when you hear you Birthday Boy or Girl shout

“it was the best party of all time”

it makes it worth every minute… Also, you can pick and choose from what we did based on how much time you have to prep for your party!
