We are nearing our move and I’m finding myself looking for pieces of Florida to bring with us. I have tons of seashells, pictures of palm trees, and air plants, but I still wanted something more. While flipping through my vintage art books I saw a chapter on pressed flowers and I was hooked. So I started right away.

This craft is a great spring activity for kids. They can walk around and pick colorful spring flowers, press them, and then arrange them. It’s a great way to work on those fine motor skills.

Plus, any time I can make a flower craft I’m happy. Something about flowers always brings a smile to my face.

How to dry and press flowers

• Choose several different shapes, sizes, and colors of flowers to press. 
• Some flowers press better than others, check out the best flowers to use for pressing. But a general rule is to look for flowers that lay flat, have thinner petals, and thicker centers.
• Make sure to let the flowers sit for a long time. Some people say a month, but we found a couple weeks to work.

Pressed flowers make a fantastic spring craft. Display them or give them as gifts!

Materials

• Freshly picked flowers
• Paper Towels
• Picture Frames

Tools

• Heavy Books
• Scissors (optional)

Instructions

1. First, gather some flowers. 
2. Layout your flowers on two layers of paper towels.
3. Gently press them into place.
4. Cover with 2 layers of paper towels. Then smash them in a large book.
5. Weigh them down with whatever you have around and put them out of the way for a few weeks. (These are those vintage art books)
6. After you have waited at least 2 weeks gently open the books and pull out the paper towels.
7. Next just play around with your layouts.  I moved mine around quite a bit deciding which flowers I liked etc.  When you have a good idea of what you like, open your frames and place them directly on the glass.
8. Then place paper and layer in extra padding (magazine pages) to make it nice and tight when you close it.

Now J, he will challenge first thing in the morning. Which is always fun. Stealing a minute out of the blue for a quick game is really nice.

What you need to make your own Button Tic Tac Toe magnet game:

• 6 popcycle sticks
• Buttons. At least 2 different colors.
• Magnet strips
• Paint. Optional, but gives it a nice finished look.
• Hot glue gun and glue.

How to make your Button Tic Tac Toe magnet game:

Start by making your grid. Use glue to hold your shape together. Next using the edge of your counter or a table break your last 2 popcycle sticks into pieces. These pieces will be used to fill in the back side of your grid so it will sit flush on your fridge. Use hot glue to secure in place. Next glue the magnet strips along the back. Make sure to line up your magnet as close to the outside edges as possible so that it will stay even on the fridge. There may be areas that your broken popcycle sticks leave space under your magnet. Just fill any open gaps with glue as well.

For game pieces I had these cute little button packs that had a lot of different sizes inside. I chose to make my button magnets 2-toned. Place a dab of hot glue and attach buttons together and then to a piece of magnet. Make sure to press tight when the glue is still wet so that it fills the button holes to create a great bond.

Add a quick coat of paint to your grid if you like and move to the fridge when dry! Please make sure to keep out of reach of small children that still put things into their mouths! Even when it’s not in use this button tic tac toe game looks really cute when you walk by!

How I used the Printable Garage Sale Kit

This year I put the kids’ clothes on the middle table.  I had Little Miss’ clothes on one side and Mr. Monster’s on the other.

I taped a couple of signs from the Printable Garage Sale Kit onto a piece of a cardboard box.  Boys on one side…

and girls on the other.

If you’ve read our garage sale tips, you’ll know that we’re fans of the quarter box.  Some of the signs are ready to go for your quarter boxes.

The Dresser Wall in a Brother and Sister Shared Bedroom

The Dressers.  Previously, they shared an old dresser that belonged to my great grandmother.  The history is fun, but the practicality of it was wrong.  They couldn’t open the drawers, the drawers squeaked obnoxiously loud, and it was too tall for them to get into the top drawer.  We purchased a couple of small dressers from Ikea.  They are inexpensive and not the top of the Ikea quality line, but they will get us through this phase of their lives without taking up valuable real estate.  I plan on replacing all of the knobs, but for now, they work just fine.

The Hexagons.  I found these amazing Hexagon shadow boxes in the craft section of Target.  I gave them a quick coat of acrylic paint along the back panel.  I gave Little Miss a small doll and updated their air freshener with fabric that matched the room.

To match, I grabbed 2 packs of Hexagon canvases.  I cut out shapes that matched their interests and traced them onto the canvas.  Then I just filled in the shape with acrylic paint.

The pirate I drew free hand.  The tracing is a MUCH easier way to go.  (recognize the items in Mr. Monster’s shelf?  It’s the cowboy from his birthday party and a star from their nursery)

Quote Sign.  I used some tips from my last quote sign to create this one.  I did learn a couple of new tricks, which I’ll share soon.

The Corner Beds

Initial Collages.  I added some color over their beds with these Initial wall collages.  I used the coral colors as the base for Little Miss’ wall.

Then I used the Navy Blue for Mr. Monster’s wall.

I even kept the “I” and “S” from their nursery and added them to the collages.

Beds.  Instead of going the traditional twin bed route, I used the Ikea kids beds.  They are perfect!  They are a bit smaller, so they take up a lot less room and they are big enough that they have room to grow into them.

Since I used the smaller beds, I couldn’t go the standard bedding route.  Instead, I purchased a couple of throw blankets.  The kids love them because they are not too hot, yet keep them warm against the chill of an AC.  I was able to find pillowcases in the colors that I need at Target.

I knew that I wanted the beds to go into the corner of the room.  When I searched Pinterest for a brother and sister shared bedroom, it was the one idea that stood out the most.  But I hated the idea of losing all that valuable real estate.

After reading about calm down corners from Views From A Step Stool, I knew that I wanted to make a similar space for Little Miss.  We call it her quiet corner.

Quiet Corner Decorations.  Hanging over the quiet corner are some pictures.  The kids love looking at pictures of our family.  I just strung some yarn and used clothes pins to attach the pictures.

Above the pictures are some more hexagons.  These cork boards will be for their special art projects.  A fun way to display their hard work.  I wasn’t a fan of the sticky strips that came with these, but I just used some 3m strips and that worked perfectly!

A Couple Extras in our Brother and Sister Shared Bedroom

Clothes Hamper and Mirror.  For their dirty clothes, I hung a pillowcase inside of an embroidery hoop.  I love this method because I can quickly grab their laundry and put everything into the washer at once.  Plus, it’s super inexpensive.

Next to it, is a simple white mirror.  Beneath that, I hung the bags that the pillowcases came in.  The kiddos use the bags to put treasures into.  Plus, since they came with the pillowcases, they match the room perfectly.

The kids love their new brother and sister shared bedroom.  I have a couple of ideas for some additions, but you know I’ll share them when they’re done.

Our Grandma was a wealth of knowledge about a lot of things.  She kept boxes full of note cards.  From cooking, cleaning, gardening, canning, sewing.  You name it, she had a card for it.  Like her Spaghetti Seasoning Mix.

I love that her tips are simple to do.  So simple that even me, with my brown thumb, can try them.  Plus, Little Miss loved helping with everything.  From picking out the flowers, at the store, to arranging the flowers into the vases.  She even made this cute little bouquet.  She later put it in her room, “to make her room smell pretty”.

Grandma’s Tips To Keep Fresh Cut Flowers Alive Longer

Put a penny in a vase of tulips to keep their shape.  One of my favorite flowers are tulips. I started with a bent bag of tulips…apparently they had shoved too many bouquets into one pot at the store.  I put a penny in the bottom of the vase and the next day, they were all pointing as far upward as their bent stems would allow.

Smash chrysanthemum stems and add a little sugar to their water.  Since it’s not chrysanthemum season, I wasn’t able to test this one…keep an eye out for a followup post.

Split stems for longer life.  I tested this theory by cutting all the stems in my tulip bouquet, except for 2.

Two days later, and we were already seeing a difference in one of the uncut stems.

No leaves in the water.  The decay will poison the water.  This explains a lot of my past bouquets of flowers.  They never seem to last, and they always had the most disgusting water…I never paid attention to the leaves.  Lesson learned.

Cleansing powder in vase lengthens the life of cut flowers.  I had to do a bit of research on this one.  aka…ask mom what the heck cleansing powder is…According to mom, it’s Comet.  I don’t have Comet…So I used mom’s suggestion; 1/8 tsp bleach and 1 tsp sugar.  The bleach helps to fight off bacteria while the sugar feeds your flowers.

I’m really not sure what the last tip about a strawberry basket and flower “frog” means…so I’m going to let you make your own conclusions.  If you have any ideas, leave them in the comments!

My favorite part of writing this post is getting try all the tricks.  Which means that my house is full of fresh flowers.  Which makes me think of our Grandma.  It’s amazing how much happier a house with fresh flowers feels.  Makes me think that I should keep some all year long.  And with these tips, they will last for a nice long while.

OK to Wake! Children’s Alarm Clock:   It happens to every child.  They get up in the morning, ready to start the day.  Come to find out, it’s only 4:30 AM.  This alarm clock is great for letting your little one know that it’s not quite time to get up.  You set the time, and the light turns green when it’s ok for your little one to get up.  You can set the rules for what suits your family.  We told J that he could get up, but he had to stay in his room until the light turned green.  The only exception was the bathroom.  Worked like a charm!

Tips for setting up Your Garage Sales

1 ~ Be organized!  People are shopping!  Let them see what you have to offer.  I know a lot of people use bins for their clothes.  As a regular shopper, I can tell you that this is not ideal.  The more spread out your clothes are, the better they will sell.  If you have too much to spread out at first, start spreading them out as they sell.  And keep up with the traffic.  After a rush, clean up your shop.  Make sure the holes are filled.  You don’t want empty space.  Use those tables!
2 ~ Advertise!  Don’t just throw up a quick ad on Craigslist and think you’re done.  Make sure your signs are big and easy to read.  You don’t need a novel.  Just “Sale” and an arrow will do the trick.  I love using bright foam boards.  They withstand a little rain and can be seen from far away.  Take advantage of your city’s Facebook groups.  I posted to both swap groups and garage sale groups.  I also watched the groups for any ISO posts.  If someone is looking for 2T clothes, I comment that I’m selling a bunch.3 ~ Hang as much as you can.  This year we strung a chain across our garage to hang clothes on.  It worked great!  I put the hangers inside the links and it kept the clothes from bunching together in the middle.  I kept a piece “on display” for the entire sale.  It was a great way to get traffic looking through the clothes.  Plus it helped that item sell faster!

Tips for pricing your Garage Sales

4 ~ Group your small stuff.  But don’t always put them in bags.  Let your customers decide which small toys they want.  Put a generic price on them, but offer an incentive to buy more.  I had a small box of books for $0.25 each or 5/$1.00.  Nobody bought just one book.  They all searched for the perfect 5 books.5 ~ Don’t forget about the everyday items.  Did you know that people love to buy baby towels or old receiving blankets? I almost didn’t put out the receiving blankets.  They weren’t stained, but they weren’t in “like new” condition anymore.  But I put them out there at $0.25 each or 5/$1.00, and they sold like hotcakes!  Quickest $5.00 of the whole garage sale!  Fill a box with socks, bibs, hats, and bloomers.  They will be gone in a flash!

6 ~ Find the price sweet spot.  Pricing for garage sales is hard.  You want to price it high enough that you make money, but low enough that people will buy it.  This one varies with the area you live in.  It might help to shop some local sales in the weeks leading up to your sale.  I used to always mark my big stuff too high.  You hear 30% of retail floating around and think it’s the best rule.  But I find that it’s too high for a garage sale.  People want cheap.  If you want to make eBay money off of it, you should be selling it on eBay.  If you want $5.00 for a pair of brand name jeans, put it in a consignment sale.  If 5 people have picked up an item, with excitement, and put it back down…then it’s too high.  I’ll lower the price by a dollar or two, and it usually sells!  A little less money is still better than no sale at all!

7 ~ Overprice the attraction piece.  I always have a nice piece that I may or may not want to sell.  Like an old rocking chair or a nice curio cabinet.  Put it towards the front and then put a tag on it that’s slightly too high.  Unlike the rest of your stuff, you don’t want this piece to sell right away.  It’s drawing in customers and getting them “in the door”.  The rest of your prices will get them spending.  Later in the sale, you can drop the price, or just sell it on Craigslist instead.

Tips for customers at your Garage Sales

8 ~ Greet your customers.  Ask them if they are looking for anything in particular.  It’s such a pain to look through a stack of clothes, only to realize there is nothing in your size.  Help your customer out by letting them know what sizes you have.

9 ~ Be approachable.  If you’re not the type to start chatting with your customers, at least put your phone to the side.  You don’t want people to think that they are bothering you.

10 ~ Create a neighborhood sale.  You don’t have to get the whole block involved, but if you have at least one other house you can quickly increase your traffic.  Multi-house sales are a big draw and the more houses the better!  Just put a flyer on everyone’s door and let them decide whether or not they want to join.
