How to create toilet paper rolls for your guests.

So here’s how you do it.  Grab a sheet of tissue paper.  Place your roll slightly off-center and at the end of your tissue paper. Roll your toilet paper in the tissue paper. Tuck the shorter end completely into the toilet paper tube. For the longer end, gently twist the tissue paper while gently pushing it into the tube. Done!

What you need to make your own Button Tic Tac Toe magnet game:

• 6 popcycle sticks
• Buttons. At least 2 different colors.
• Magnet strips
• Paint. Optional, but gives it a nice finished look.
• Hot glue gun and glue.

How to make your Button Tic Tac Toe magnet game:

Start by making your grid. Use glue to hold your shape together. Next using the edge of your counter or a table break your last 2 popcycle sticks into pieces. These pieces will be used to fill in the back side of your grid so it will sit flush on your fridge. Use hot glue to secure in place. Next glue the magnet strips along the back. Make sure to line up your magnet as close to the outside edges as possible so that it will stay even on the fridge. There may be areas that your broken popcycle sticks leave space under your magnet. Just fill any open gaps with glue as well.

For game pieces I had these cute little button packs that had a lot of different sizes inside. I chose to make my button magnets 2-toned. Place a dab of hot glue and attach buttons together and then to a piece of magnet. Make sure to press tight when the glue is still wet so that it fills the button holes to create a great bond.

Add a quick coat of paint to your grid if you like and move to the fridge when dry! Please make sure to keep out of reach of small children that still put things into their mouths! Even when it’s not in use this button tic tac toe game looks really cute when you walk by!

How I used the Printable Garage Sale Kit

This year I put the kids’ clothes on the middle table.  I had Little Miss’ clothes on one side and Mr. Monster’s on the other.

I taped a couple of signs from the Printable Garage Sale Kit onto a piece of a cardboard box.  Boys on one side…

and girls on the other.

If you’ve read our garage sale tips, you’ll know that we’re fans of the quarter box.  Some of the signs are ready to go for your quarter boxes.

I searched all over Google, Pinterest, and Etsy for ideas for inspirational quote wall art for the kids’ room.  Nothing felt right.  Either it was too cheesy.  Done a million times.  Too long (cause I’m making this sign by hand…I didn’t want it to take forever to create)  Finally, we were having a fun song session and we started singing “Jesus Loves the Little Children”.  Perfect!

Tips for creating inspirational quote wall art

This isn’t the first time I’ve done an inspirational quote wall art.  The first time was for our living room gallery wall.  You can check out how I did that wooden sign here.

I headed over to Canva to type out my sign.  I used 3 different fonts and arranged the page so I could print the whole thing on as little paper as possible.

I printed the words out and cut each word out.  This way I could control the spacing of the quote.

I purchased a wooden sign from a craft store.  The pieces were spaced out farther than I wanted, but it was cheaper than buying the wood pieces separately.  I also liked how soft the wood was.  It made it easy to trace the words into it.

I took the sign apart, gave it a quick coat of white paint and then reassembled it the way I wanted it.

Then I got to work painting the sign.  I took into consideration the things I learned the first time and also picked up one new great tip.

Use a paint marker to create inspirational quote wall art.

This thing saved me so much time!  When I paint, I’m in crafty mode…not artist mode.  9 times out of 10, I squirt the paint directly onto what I’m painting and spread it out.  That’s not how you paint a wall sign.  And it’s the hardest part of this project.

Using the paint pen gave me a ton of control and I felt less nervous about the project looking right.

I used a thin tipped paint pen for this project.  Next time I will use both a thick and a thin tip.  That way I can better fill in some of the thicker letters.

When I finished the project I had a lovely addition to the kids’ new bedroom.

The Dresser Wall in a Brother and Sister Shared Bedroom

The Dressers.  Previously, they shared an old dresser that belonged to my great grandmother.  The history is fun, but the practicality of it was wrong.  They couldn’t open the drawers, the drawers squeaked obnoxiously loud, and it was too tall for them to get into the top drawer.  We purchased a couple of small dressers from Ikea.  They are inexpensive and not the top of the Ikea quality line, but they will get us through this phase of their lives without taking up valuable real estate.  I plan on replacing all of the knobs, but for now, they work just fine.

The Hexagons.  I found these amazing Hexagon shadow boxes in the craft section of Target.  I gave them a quick coat of acrylic paint along the back panel.  I gave Little Miss a small doll and updated their air freshener with fabric that matched the room.

To match, I grabbed 2 packs of Hexagon canvases.  I cut out shapes that matched their interests and traced them onto the canvas.  Then I just filled in the shape with acrylic paint.

The pirate I drew free hand.  The tracing is a MUCH easier way to go.  (recognize the items in Mr. Monster’s shelf?  It’s the cowboy from his birthday party and a star from their nursery)

Quote Sign.  I used some tips from my last quote sign to create this one.  I did learn a couple of new tricks, which I’ll share soon.

The Corner Beds

Initial Collages.  I added some color over their beds with these Initial wall collages.  I used the coral colors as the base for Little Miss’ wall.

Then I used the Navy Blue for Mr. Monster’s wall.

I even kept the “I” and “S” from their nursery and added them to the collages.

Beds.  Instead of going the traditional twin bed route, I used the Ikea kids beds.  They are perfect!  They are a bit smaller, so they take up a lot less room and they are big enough that they have room to grow into them.

Since I used the smaller beds, I couldn’t go the standard bedding route.  Instead, I purchased a couple of throw blankets.  The kids love them because they are not too hot, yet keep them warm against the chill of an AC.  I was able to find pillowcases in the colors that I need at Target.

I knew that I wanted the beds to go into the corner of the room.  When I searched Pinterest for a brother and sister shared bedroom, it was the one idea that stood out the most.  But I hated the idea of losing all that valuable real estate.

After reading about calm down corners from Views From A Step Stool, I knew that I wanted to make a similar space for Little Miss.  We call it her quiet corner.

Quiet Corner Decorations.  Hanging over the quiet corner are some pictures.  The kids love looking at pictures of our family.  I just strung some yarn and used clothes pins to attach the pictures.

Above the pictures are some more hexagons.  These cork boards will be for their special art projects.  A fun way to display their hard work.  I wasn’t a fan of the sticky strips that came with these, but I just used some 3m strips and that worked perfectly!

A Couple Extras in our Brother and Sister Shared Bedroom

Clothes Hamper and Mirror.  For their dirty clothes, I hung a pillowcase inside of an embroidery hoop.  I love this method because I can quickly grab their laundry and put everything into the washer at once.  Plus, it’s super inexpensive.

Next to it, is a simple white mirror.  Beneath that, I hung the bags that the pillowcases came in.  The kiddos use the bags to put treasures into.  Plus, since they came with the pillowcases, they match the room perfectly.

The kids love their new brother and sister shared bedroom.  I have a couple of ideas for some additions, but you know I’ll share them when they’re done.

Transitioning from a nursery to a big kid’s room is emotional for more than just the child.  I had a hard time holding back tears as I delicately took down each letter.  It’s amazing how such simple decor can become so sentimental.   When Little Miss asked why I was taking them down, I told her that I was going to put up big kid decorations.  That didn’t really appease her either.  So the idea of the initial wall collage was born and I’ve been slowly collecting letters “I” and “S” ever since.

The Different Crafts In Our Initial Wall Collage

Simple Painted Letters.  Just as it sounds, I just took a couple of small letters and gave them a quick coat of acrylic paint.  Done.  (I like easy crafts…don’t you?)

Paper Covered Letters.  These are my favorite.  They’re quick and easy but provide a lot of color and design.

String Wrapped Letters.  I picked this craft because it sounded easy…lesson learned.  Start by gluing the beginning of the string or yarn to the back of the top of the letter.  Then slowly and carefully, wrap the string around the letter.  You may find that the curves and edges are more difficult.  Try a couple of methods to get the look you’re going for.  And don’t be afraid to add glue along the way, to keep your corners looking nice.  Finish by using a dab of glue at the end.

Reverse Fabric Letter.  Take a piece of fabric and wrap it around a piece of cardboard that has been cut to fit your frame.  Then glue a white letter to the fabric.  I kept the glass out of the frame and just inserted the fabric wrapped piece back into the frame.

Rolled Paper Letters.  This one could be done two ways.  Either way, start by rolling up several pieces of paper.  I chose some fun paper that came out of a book of craft paper.  Now, you can either cut the paper as you glue it to your letter; or you can glue them all and carefully cut at the end.  I chose the latter.  It was faster, but the edges may have been cleaner had I cut first.  Plus, you’ll want to make sure that you have quality scissors and Exacto knives to cut after it’s glued.

Kid’s Art Letters.  I wanted to include the kids in this process.  I used the Toddler Art as a guide and let the kids paint however they chose.  Then I pulled the tape to reveal their letter.

I did purchase several pre-done letters, to give the wall some extra variety.  And since the rest of the room has a very clean look, I left a couple undecorated.

Inexpensive Nursery Wall Decor – Stars!

I completely underestimated how emotional turning the nursery into a kid’s room would be.  I remember when I was pregnant with Little Miss and wanting to find inexpensive nursery wall decor that I wasn’t afraid of hanging over her crib.  I decided that the lightest thing that could possibly fall on her head, and not suffocate her, was paper.  And since we didn’t find out the sex of either of our babies, we wanted to make sure that the theme was more gender neutral.  We went with stars.

I bought a book of paper and started folding and cutting stars.  I found a quick tutorial from Little Birdie Secrets.

I hung them over the crib with a piece of sticky tacky.

When Mr. Monster arrived, we moved the nursery into a bigger room and moved the stars to a little space on the wall next to the closet.  They led up to the moon night light.

Inexpensive Nursery Wall Decor – Alphabet Collage!

One of the first ideas I loved on Pinterest was an alphabet wall.  When I headed to the craft store I got sticker shock.  Each letter was going to cost almost $2, which made this seemingly inexpensive project almost $50.

Instead, I purchased two packs of die-cut letters.  They were smaller than my original idea, but really, they fit the wall perfectly.

To make the letters thicker, I glued two of them together.  (hence buying 2 packs)

I painted the sides and attached paper from the same book of paper I bought for the stars.

Poof, an alphabet wall that cost less than $10!  That’s what I call inexpensive nursery wall decor.

Now that the nursery decor is down, we have begun putting together the new “Big Kids” room.  Stay tuned!  I’ll be sharing this new room soon!

Our Grandma was a wealth of knowledge about a lot of things.  She kept boxes full of note cards.  From cooking, cleaning, gardening, canning, sewing.  You name it, she had a card for it.  Like her Spaghetti Seasoning Mix.

I love that her tips are simple to do.  So simple that even me, with my brown thumb, can try them.  Plus, Little Miss loved helping with everything.  From picking out the flowers, at the store, to arranging the flowers into the vases.  She even made this cute little bouquet.  She later put it in her room, “to make her room smell pretty”.

Grandma’s Tips To Keep Fresh Cut Flowers Alive Longer

Put a penny in a vase of tulips to keep their shape.  One of my favorite flowers are tulips. I started with a bent bag of tulips…apparently they had shoved too many bouquets into one pot at the store.  I put a penny in the bottom of the vase and the next day, they were all pointing as far upward as their bent stems would allow.

Smash chrysanthemum stems and add a little sugar to their water.  Since it’s not chrysanthemum season, I wasn’t able to test this one…keep an eye out for a followup post.

Split stems for longer life.  I tested this theory by cutting all the stems in my tulip bouquet, except for 2.

Two days later, and we were already seeing a difference in one of the uncut stems.

No leaves in the water.  The decay will poison the water.  This explains a lot of my past bouquets of flowers.  They never seem to last, and they always had the most disgusting water…I never paid attention to the leaves.  Lesson learned.

Cleansing powder in vase lengthens the life of cut flowers.  I had to do a bit of research on this one.  aka…ask mom what the heck cleansing powder is…According to mom, it’s Comet.  I don’t have Comet…So I used mom’s suggestion; 1/8 tsp bleach and 1 tsp sugar.  The bleach helps to fight off bacteria while the sugar feeds your flowers.

I’m really not sure what the last tip about a strawberry basket and flower “frog” means…so I’m going to let you make your own conclusions.  If you have any ideas, leave them in the comments!

My favorite part of writing this post is getting try all the tricks.  Which means that my house is full of fresh flowers.  Which makes me think of our Grandma.  It’s amazing how much happier a house with fresh flowers feels.  Makes me think that I should keep some all year long.  And with these tips, they will last for a nice long while.
