Square Cutting activity for preschoolers

This fun craft works on scissor skills while incorporating primary colors and the square shape!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Materials

• Construction Paper - Red, Yellow, & Blue
• Cardstock - White or Black

Tools

• Pre-Cut Cardboard Square or Ruler
• Glue Stick
• Pencil
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Start by cutting a piece of cardstock in half.
2. On one half, trace your cardboard square or use a ruler to create a square.
3. Lightly bend the paper in half, pinching inside of the square to cut a slit.
4. From that slit cut out to the outer edge of the square.
5. Finish cutting out the square.
6. Use half sheets of construction paper to start cutting paper strips.
7. Start gluing the paper strips onto the second half of cardstock.
8. Glue the cut-out square sheet of paper, pencil mark side down, onto the paper strips.
9. Trim around the outer edge.

Tips for making these Christmas tree crafts.

Learn how to make a paper Christmas tree out of construction paper.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Materials

• 2 Sheets Green Construction Paper
• Colored Paper Scraps
• 1 Sheet White Cardstock

Tools

• Paper Cutter (optional)
• Hole Punches
• Scissors
• Glue Stick

Instructions

1. Start by cutting the green paper in half lengthwise. Leaving you with 4 equal sheets of green paper.
2. Fold the sheets in half and cut into tall triangle shapes. Make sure the fold is in the middle.
3. Use your scissors to create a fringe cut along the cut side of the paper.
4. Pull apart all 4 fringe cut trees. Add a strip of glue on one side of the seem.
5. Then add a folded tree lining up the sides. Continue until all 4 trees are glued together in a folded in half stack.
6. Glue to paper one side at a time.
7. Fluff apart fringe edges of your tree.
8. Next start to decorate. Use a hold punch to make ornaments. Then attach with glue. Make sure to add them all the way out to the edges.

• White Paper
• Red Paper

Instructions

1. Fold the white piece of paper in half lengthwise and then cut into 2 equal pieces.
2. Using a ruler, create a triangle on one of the pieces of paper.
3. Pinch and snip a slit in the center of the triangle shape.
4. Cut the triangle out of the center of the paper.
5. Cut strips of your colored paper. You can mix shades and sizes of strips.
6. Place your cut triangle on top of the second half of paper and trace.
7. Glue strips of red paper to cover your traced triangle.
8. Glue the cut triangle on top, with the pencil side down.
9. Trim off any paper strips sticking out.

How to make these simple paper cross crafts

Use scissors to cut paper strips from the colored paper in sunset colors. 

We picked colors from yellow to pink and different shades of blue. It’s not important to cut strips of the exactly the same width. Once you cut them, place them aside for later.

Fold the white cardstock in half. Press only on the middle part. 

Using a pencil, draw half of a cross. 

Cut the cross out from the middle, making sure the frame remains uncut. 

Take a second piece of white cardstock and place the cross frame on top. Trace the cross on the bottom cardstock.  

Apply glue on the white cardstock and glue paper strips over the cross outline, from lighter to darker. Keep gluing until you cover the cross outline completely.

Apply glue to the cardstock with the cross shape cut out. Make sure to add the glue to the side with the pencil markings. 

Press the cross frame and glue it over the paper with paper strips. Cut out extra paper strips to finish.

How to make this easy Easter craft

Start by outlining a cross shape onto a white paper scrap. Cut it out and put it aside for later. 

Stack papers in sunset colors and cut out paper strips freehand (yellow, red, orange, pink). 

Repeat the same with blue hue papers and cut out several paper strips of each color. 

Place black construction paper on the table and start gluing paper strips to create a sunset background. 

Use the cross template you created earlier to outline and cut out crosses from black construction paper. We need 3 crosses. You can make the cross in the middle a bit larger than the other two.

Cut out a piece of black paper to use as the mountain on the bottom of the sunset scene. Glue it and the 3 crosses on top of the mount.

How to make scissor practice Christmas trees

Start by turning your cardstock landscape. Then fold it in half once and then on the left side fold it in half again. If you can, avoid creasing all the way to the edges only in the middle. 

Cut out half of your Christmas tree. Then set aside.

Next, start cutting paper strips. You will need a lot of green. You can do some strips of your other colors and punch out holes. And create a star for the top of your finished tree.

Now it’s time to glue down some strips. Start at the top of the right half of your cardstock. 

Work your way down until that side of the paper is mostly green.

Now start to add on decorations. You can peek at your tree from time to time by folding over the triangle to see what will show.

When you are happy with your tree, add glue to the left side of the paper.

Fold over and press down.

This adorable Thanksgiving turkey is perfect for preschoolers who need cutting practice.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Materials

• Construction Paper. Red, Yellow, Orange, & Brown.
• White Cardstock.
• Googly Eyes.
• Tape. (optional)

Tools

• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Black Marker

Instructions

1. Start by cutting paper strips. Lots of strips. The width doesn't matter.
   You will also need to make a body out of your brown. Either draw your child a peanut shape for them to cut or you can do this part for them. You also need a beak and a snood, yep that’s what it’s called.
2. Now pull over your white piece of cardstock and have them paste on their strips. They can go any which way they like.
3. They can cut them shorter or even tear them to fit in blank spots. Just have them keep going until they have covered as much of the paper as they can.
4. Give your paper a moment or two to dry. During this time you can put together your turkey’s body.
5. Now flip over your cardstock and plan out your feathers. Place your turkey body in the center as a guide and make a big, upsidedown, teardrop.
6. Then add two more in the opposite direction on each side and cut them out.
7. Use a bit of glue to hold them together.
8. If needed, add a piece of tape to the backside for more support.
9. Turn it back over and attach the body.
10. You can leave him like this or attach the turkey to another piece of white cardstock.

Paper Easter Egg

My daughter loves to work with her scissors, so when we were writing Construction Paper Crafts for Kids we knew we wanted to have a few projects that really let them practice those scissor skills!

A favorite from the book, that can be remade in many different patterns, is our scissor practice heart! Today we are giving it a fun Easter twist and your little one will love it!

This paper Easter egg is a fun and simple craft that requires only a few simple supplies, so it’s perfect for a classroom, Easter party, or afternoon activity.

Supplies for scissor practice Easter eggs:

• Egg Template.
• Construction Paper.
• 2 Pieces Cardstock. White or Colored.
• Scissors.
• Glue Stick.

How to create paper strip eggs

Here are the step by step instructions to create a paper Easter egg. Then you can see them all in action in the video!

Print out an egg template and cut out the egg from the center. We will be using the outside of the egg so start by cutting the middle of the egg and move out to the edge. Your child might need help with this depending on their age. 

Next, start cutting strips!

These can be all different thicknesses. Use as many colors of construction paper as you like. This is a great way to use up scrap pieces of paper you might have lying around. Once you have a good pile of strips start attaching them with glue on the second piece of paper.

Cover as much of the surface as possible.

Add glue to the ink side of your egg cut out.

Then place it on top of your strips and press down. Trim the edges if needed and you’re done! 

If your little one is new to gluing remind them to press down their strips and egg well to make sure they get a good bond. Watch the whole thing created in our video!

Paper Christmas Tree Ornament

If there is one thing my little preschooler will sit around and do, any chance she gets is using her scissors! While developing scissor skills is great, having a bunch of scraps of paper around isn’t always ideal.

This is why in our book Construction Paper Crafts for Kids we have a whole chapter on ideas of what to make with hand cut paper strips! These ornaments are a smaller version of the suggested tree from the book.

• Construction Paper. Green & decoration colors.
• White Cardstock.
• Something Circle. The size you want your ornaments. **Or grab our template here!

How to make a Christmas ornament out of paper:

Here is the step by step instructions for creating paper Christmas tree ornaments.  Stick around to the end and watch a quick video of the whole process.

Using something from around the home, trace circles onto a piece of white cardstock. You will need 2 circles for each ornament. Then carefully cut them out.

You can cut them apart into squares to make getting around the circle easier for their little hands, or you can precut the circles for this craft.

Next, start cutting those strips! You will need mostly green and a few from any other colors you have lying around. This is an excellent way to use up some scraps of paper you might have left over from previous projects.

Draw on a tree, aka triangle, shape on one of your circles. (If you want an easier way to create the trees, or want a different design in the middle, check out our template here!)

Start with a little snip in the middle and cut out your tree.

Now grab one of the whole circles, with the ink side up, and add some glue. Place the strips, one at a time, horizontally onto the glue.

You can do green first, then colors, or just mix and match.

When the circle is covered add glue to the ink side of the triangle circle and place on top.

Trim the edges and add the year on the back!

Punch a hole in the top and tie on some string.

Construction Paper Monster Craft

Having a handy invitation to play ready for one or more kids can be a lifesaver.  These activities are perfect for when you need to cook dinner, fill up time in the afternoon, or host a playdate!

Our ice cream shop is always fun to pull out in the summer and these construction paper monster puppets are an excellent fall craft that encourages cutting skills and independent play!

Setting up your invitation to play.

Whether you are creating these monster puppets for one kid, or a table full of little ones, a little prep can go a long way.

Start by cutting your colored construction paper smaller squares and rectangles for the bodies.

Use your large hole punch to create black circles and then cut them in half for the mouths.

Place a few white strips to cut into teeth. Then add your scissors, googly eyes, and craft sticks to the tray.

Making your Paper Monsters:

I created a couple to show the kids how to assemble them. You can see how to create them here in this quick video.

They can cut out any shape they want. The scissors will give the monsters a fun furry look.

Glue on one, two, or ten eyes! Also, add on a mouth.

Flip over and attach as many arms and legs as you like. Then glue on a craft stick.

Don’t forget those teeth…

The more the merrier! These guys are seriously cute and are sure to spark some silly play!
