Toilet Paper Roll Butterfly

Butterflies are one of our favorite things about spring and summer.  They pair so nicely with lots of April preschool themes or May crafts.

Plus, we all probably have an abundance of toilet paper rolls to discard of so why not turn them into something fun for the kids?

What I love about this fun craft is that the kids can easily start and do this on their own. Like most construction paper crafts, it’s great for their imagination and also teaches how to follow instructions, fine motor skills, and more.

How to make a Toilet Paper Tube Butterfly

This Toilet Paper Tube Butterfly craft is so much fun to make!

Prep Time 10 minutes

Active Time 10 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• 1 clean cardboard tube, like a toilet paper tube (per project)
• 2 wiggly eyes
• 1 black pipe cleaner
• Printable Butterfly template
• Construction Paper

Tools

• Glue
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Clear tape

Instructions

1. Print the butterfly template and use it to trace pieces of construction paper. Let your child cut out each of the pieces.
2. Cut another sheet of paper to fit the cardboard tube, approximately 4 inches by 6 inches. Glue the paper to the cardboard tube.
3. Glue the wings to the back of the paper tube.
4. Let your child decorate the wings.
5. Cut the pipe cleaner in half. Then, bend one half in the middle. Wrap the ends around a pencil to create curls.
6. Attach the center of the pipe cleaner to the inside of the tube with clear tape.
7. Add a couple of wiggly eyes. (if you don't have wiggly eyes, let your child draw on eyes!)
8. Allow the craft to dry completely before playing or displaying.

Paper Butterfly

It never fails… I always have lots of random craft supplies leftover from other projects. These supplies end up lying around the house in little piles.

This is a great way to use some of them up! Whether you have leftover pom-poms or little jewels, these paper butterflies are a great way for your little one to make something beautiful!

Supplies for this butterfly invitation to create station

• Printable Template.
• Construction Paper.
• Scissors.
• Glue Stick.
• White Glue.
• Embellishments. Pipe cleaners, pom-poms, paper punched holes, etc.
• Tray to hold it all.

How to make a construction paper butterfly

These are the step by step instructions for creating a paper butterfly with our template. Then watch the video below to see it all in action.

Remember, this is an invitation to create, which means there really is no wrong way to construct this fun project.

Print off the template on at least 2 different colored pieces of paper.

Cut out all the shapes. Your kids can help with this or you can do it ahead of time.

You can use the scraps to cut paper strips or punch holes.

Place all of these pieces into a tray and place them on the table. Give your child a solid sheet of paper for them to build on and some glue!

Now let them create. They can mix and match the pieces of the butterfly and even stack them.

Decorate the wings and body.

No two butterflies will be the same so they can create these construction paper butterflies over and over and find new ways to decorate each time. They will really enjoy the freedom that this invitation to play gives them.
