Instructions

1. Start by cutting your cardboard into a heart shape.
2. Using the back end of the paintbrush poke holes in the heart.
3. Using your brush, pry off the top layer of the cardboard.Once you get it started it can be removed by pulling it off with your fingers.
4. You can also remove some of the top layers near the edges.
5. Once you are happy with the design it is time to start painting!
6. Start with the flat surfaces of your heart.
7. Next, paint all of the lines exposed from removing the top layer.

• Acrylic Paint
• 2 Sheets of White Cardstock
• Bubble Wrap

Tools

• Paper Cutter
• Pencil

• Paint Pen or Markers (optional)

Instructions

1. Start by cutting both sheets of your paper into 1/4ths. Then draw hearts onto 4 of your pieces. You will not see your pencil lines in the end so there is no need to erase any mistakes.
2. Then pinch the center of your heart to snip a starting point. Continue to cut out the center of the heart. Again, you will not see your lines so don't worry if any of them show. Place your hearts off to the side, with your 4 plain sheets of cardstock.
3. Next, on a sheet of wax paper, squirt out a few stripes of your acrylic paint colors. You will want at least 2. Make sure they are colors that will blend well.
4. Use a pallet knife to spread out the paint into an even layer at least the size of your quarter sheet of paper.
5. Cut a piece of bubble wrap slightly smaller than your paper. Place it bubble side down on the paint and press down.
6. Now move the bubble wrap paint side down to a plain sheet of your cardstock.
7. Peel the bubble wrap back off to reveal your print!Continue this on each sheet of plain cardstock. You should easily get 4 with the same paint and bubble wrap.
8. Once your pattern has dried attach the cut hearts on top using glue. Be sure to add the glue to the side of the heart where any pencil marks have been made.
9. Trim off any uneven edges on your design.
10. Last, you can add names or messages onto your hearts.

Instructions

1. Start by getting your rock wet. You want to wet the top and the sides so it is nice and saturated.
2. Using a toothpick start adding your first color onto your rock. The color will run a bit. This is what you want.
3. Next, add on your second color. Swirl the color on and around your first. They will begin to blend together a bit.
4. At this point, you can be done or add a third color. we wanted to add a bit of pink!
5. Allow the paint to dry, about 10 minutes. Then, use your brush to create hearts onto your rocks. For this, you can choose any color you like! If needed add a second solid coat.
6. If you would like to protect your work make sure to use a clear coat sealer. Make sure your rock is completely dry before seeling.

Instructions

1. Roll out a piece of contact paper and draw your hearts on the clear side of the paper. You can do one large heart, a few small hearts, or a combination of both!
2. Peel off the backing of your contact paper and lay it sticky side up on your work surface. Use tape to secure it down.
3. Using the eraser side of your pencils dab from the ink pad onto the contact paper. Use a different eraser with each color if possible to keep your colors from mixing on the pad.
4. Encourage them to fill up the hearts as much as they can even going over the edges a bit with the dots.
5. Once the hearts are filled place the second sheet of contact paper on top of your design, sticky sides together.
6. Press out any bubbles and cut out your hearts.

Mended Paper Hearts

There is something special when receiving handmade Valentine’s Day cards, you have to agree!

This mended paper hearts craft project is perfect to make with kids at home, to give to their favorite people. You can also use it as a quick and easy way to make classroom Valentines during art class!

We created 3 different versions using the same process:

• mended heart bookmark
• mended heart folded Valentine’s Day card
• “Love You to Pieces” Valentine

Turn Mended Hearts into Bookmarks in a Kindness Project

Reminder: National Random Acts of Kindness Day is on February 17th and World Kindness Day is on November 13th each year.

Bookmarks can be gifted either to people in their lives who are avid readers or to their friends. Children can also turn this craft into a kindness project for Valentine’s day!

They can make many of mended heart bookmarks, write encouraging messages on the back (or their favorite quotes) and leave all those bookmarks inside books when they return them to the school library! Spread love!

How to Make Mended Paper Hearts Valentine’s Day Cards and Bookmarks

Prepare in advance blank bookmark and cards cut from white construction paper.

Start by stacking 3 different colors of construction paper one on top of another. Use bookmark as a guide and draw freehand a heart small enough to fit inside. 

Repeat drawing process with a piece of white cardstock cut in card size. 

Cut the hearts, holding all three construction papers firmly. Our goal is to have 3 smaller and 3 bigger hearts, each in 3 different colors and exactly the same size. 

Hold bigger hearts together and cut them in 4 pieces. Cut smaller hearts in 3 pieces, making sure to hold all 3 pieces together firmly. 

Flip hearts on the other side to hide pencil (or marker) when gluing on white cardstock.

Arrange the broken hearts in such a way to have 3 different color pieces for each heart bookmark (smaller hearts).

When using bigger hearts, since we have cut 4 pieces, some of the pieces will be repeated so just try to make them as colorful as possible. These will be used for Valentine’s Day cards. 

Glue each of the mended hearts using a glue stick. Make sure to leave a bit of white cardstock visible between pieces. All three mended hearts should fit inside a bookmark.

Glue pieces to form a larger mended heart on the folded piece of white cardstock to create a Valentine’s Day card. Again, make sure to leave a bit of space between heart pieces.

And also make sure pieces align in such a way to form a heart. It’s easy to glue them a bit crooked.

Another option for Valentine’s Day card: instead of folded Valentine’s Day card where you write a message to a receiver inside the card, you can make a Valentine’s Day card with a message right on the front, like this “Love You to Pieces!” card.

How to Make Cute Heart Shaped Wands

Gather your supplies! Set aside everything, we start with a paper cutter and construction paper. 

Start by cutting paper strips from construction paper using a paper cutter or scissors, making sure they are all in the same width. 

Fold one of the paper strips in half and punch a hole on each of the folded sides. 

Hold the bottom of the folded paper strip, pick a top part and join with the bottom. Repeat with the other side, forming a heart shape. Holes should be aligned.

 Take a pipe cleaner and pull it through the holes. Fold the pipe cleaner in half. Twist it under the paper heart to secure it and keep twisting until you reach the end of the pipe cleaner. 

Add some beads to decorate your heart wand by pulling them through the bottom of a pipe cleaner holder. Your Valentine’s Day heart wand is ready! Spread some love magic around!

Paper Heart Wands – Variations to Basic Valentine’s Day Craft

 We also made a few variations. First is with 2 paper strips in different sizes, creating a double heart.

To make the double heart, pick construction paper strips in two different colors. Cut one a bit shorter. Fold both in half and punch holes on both sides. Place paper strips together, longer being on inside. 

Join tops to bottom, first shorter strip and then longer paper strips to form a double heart and making sure holes are aligned. Pull pipe cleaner through the holes, fold in half and twist to form a wand holder.

The next heart wand variation includes 3 paper strips in different colors.

You will leave 2 of them in full length and cut one shorter. Start by folding all 3 paper strips in half, stack them together and punch a hole on the bottom (folded) part. Punch a hole on the other side of one long and one shorter paper strip. The third shouldn’t be punched.

Fold the paper strips to form a double heart then add 3rd paper strip from outside.

Pull the pipe cleaner through the bottom hole to secure paper strips and twist. Using a pencil, curl the edges of the long paper strip to finish this paper heart wand.

 The last variation, for a paper heart wands, we created is with 4 paper strips cut in 4 different lengths. Make sure to stack them when punching a hole to have the holinon each paper in the same spot. 

After that, stack folded paper strips in such a way that longest is inside and shortest outside. Fold tops to bottom. Tie using pipecleaner, like we did in previous variations.

Heart resist painting

The technique we use to create our heart art project is easy and fun for kids of all ages. The twist we mentioned entails using 2 different colors of oil pastels to draw hearts. Using white and black oil pastels create a completely different final result.

A heart art project created using black oil pastel looks amazingly similar to stain glass artwork!

Another change from standard watercolor resist painting where you use watercolors to paint directly on paper, we used washable markers and transfer the paint on paper.

You can use your finished heart art to create other Valentine’s Day crafts like Valentine’s Day cards, add them to a journal, turn them into a banner to hang around your home or classroom, or even frame them as an artwork!

How to Make a Heart Resist Painting with a Fun Twist

Start by drawing or doodling your heart design with black oil pastel on white construction paper (or watercolor paper). Use another piece of white paper to doodle and draw a different heart design with white oil pastel.

Cut out a piece of an aluminum foil, a bit larger than the prepared piece of white paper you used for drawing your heart design. Use washable markers to scribble directly on the foil. Pick a color combination you like the most, we decided to use pastel colors for our heart resist paintings.

After you are satisfied with watercolor marker scribbles, take a spray bottle filled with water and lightly spray water all over the foil.

Next step is pressing the paper with your heart design facing down on foil. Go over the white paper with your fingers and palm, making sure the complete surface is pressed onto the foil.

Lift the white paper and admire your heart artwork! Here you can see how lovely the heart resist painting looks with black oil markers, giving a stain glass effect. Leave aside to dry. And move onto a second heart design!

This time, change the design of your watercolor scribbles, we used a circular drawing. Repeat the process – apply water spray and press the white paper facing down, make sure to press it firmly.

It’s amazing and magical how the white heart pops once the color is applied! 

We have to warn you: this heart resist painting process is addictive and kids could end up making tons of different heart designs! Prepare enough white paper and foil pieces in advance!

We have made quite a few 3D trees, but I have to say this Valentine’s Day paper tree might just be my favorite so far!

How to make a paper heart tree

Begin by cutting the brown construction paper into strips. Use the short side of the paper to cut 1 strip that is about an inch wide. 

The rest of the strips can vary in thickness.

The 1″ strip will be the trunk of the paper three. Cut this strip in half lengthwise.

Glue one half of the 1″ strip to your blue paper and start adding all of your branches. It’s OK to have them hanging over the edges a bit. 

Once all the branches are glued down, add the second half of the trunk to the top to help hold it all together. 

Cut the green paper to add a grassy hill. 

Grab the end of each branch and twist it a couple of times. Then glue the end onto the blue paper. This will give your tree it’s fun 3D look. 

Next, cut out hearts and add the names of family members and friends. 

Glue the paper hearts onto the branches. 

Add as many as you like!

We wanted to create a template to help your kiddos create a fun and unique card to send out to those they love. They can pick from different backgrounds and create them so many different ways.

Supplies for A Construction Paper Heart Valentine

• Template.
• Paper. White Cardstock, Colored Cardstock, Construction Paper, or Plain Printer Paper!
• Scissors.
• Glue Stick.
• Markers, Crayons, or Colored Pencils.

How to make these homemade Valentines:

To create your card first pick from one of the 4 background template choices. Some would work for Valentines Day cards. Others you can use through the year for Mother’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, or just to send out something special! You have a lot of different options on how you can create your hearts. Take a peek at the video below to see them all! Once you decide on your hearts, you can choose from a colored template or a blank one that your child can decorate, cut all 4 out.

Then glue your largest heart over the dotted heart on the template.

Fold each of the smaller hearts in half, the design or color on the inside.

Starting with the smallest heart add glue to the seem. Press lightly so the glue goes up the sides a bit.

Place that heart inside the fold of the next size up.

Next, add the glue to the seem of that heart and add to your last folded heart.

Fold and crease your card template in half.

Then add all of your hearts inside the big heart, using glue on the seem again.

Fold and press the seam for at least 10 seconds. Open, fluff your hearts, and allow to dry completely.
