Tiger Craft

We love an easy craft that sneaks important skill-building. Create this simple tiger craft with your classroom or at your kitchen table.

We love to create bookmark crafts. Kids can use them while reading their favorite books or give them as gifts they can be proud of.

This tutorial will teach your children how to draw tiger stripes. They really are not very difficult. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below.

With 2022 being the year of the tiger, this craft is a perfect late January, early February classroom activity.

You can use this easy tiger activity in several ways.

• Instead of bookmarks, create borders for your classroom bulletin board.
• Have kids finish a tiger stripe for each book that they read, making it a unique book log.
• Hang them in your classroom!
• Give them as gifts
• Create them at your local library to go with some fun tiger books.
• Make them during a Chinese New Year party

Tiger Craft Bookmark

This fun tiger craft is perfect for crafters of all ages! Work on colored pencil pressure and create a craft you can use when you're done!

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• White Card Stock
• Scratch Paper

Tools

• Black Marker
• Orange Colored Pencil

Instructions

1. Cut off an 8.5"x 1.5" strip from the end of the white card stock.
2. Use the lightest pressure possible color down the center of the paper strip with the orange colored pencil. Leave a bit of white along the edge.
3. Go back down the center of the bookmark with a little heavier pressure, leaving a bit of the lightest orange on the edge.
4. Repeat a third time with even more pressure in the middle of the orange. Stacking the layers will build up the value of the orange making it brighter and brighter towards the center.
5. Go along the edges of the center playing with the pressure until you like the different values of orange on your bookmark.
6. To draw tiger stripes, create black lines from the center of your bookmark out to the edge of the paper. Use scratch paper so you can go all the way off the edges. These lines can be about an inch apart (no need to measure).
7. Go down the opposite side of the paper adding black lines to that edge in between each of your first stripes.
8. Turn the paper so you are working towards the edge of the paper. Create a wavy line starting on the center tip and ending to the left of your straight line.
9. Then, starting at the tip again, repeat, but draw to the right of the straight line.
10. This will create a wavy-edged triangle. Fill in with the black marker.
11. Repeat this all the way up one side of your bookmark.
12. Last, go up the opposite side creating the rest of your stripes.
13. You will be able to make multiple bookmarks from one sheet of paper.

Mended Paper Hearts

There is something special when receiving handmade Valentine’s Day cards, you have to agree!

This mended paper hearts craft project is perfect to make with kids at home, to give to their favorite people. You can also use it as a quick and easy way to make classroom Valentines during art class!

We created 3 different versions using the same process:

• mended heart bookmark
• mended heart folded Valentine’s Day card
• “Love You to Pieces” Valentine

Turn Mended Hearts into Bookmarks in a Kindness Project

Reminder: National Random Acts of Kindness Day is on February 17th and World Kindness Day is on November 13th each year.

Bookmarks can be gifted either to people in their lives who are avid readers or to their friends. Children can also turn this craft into a kindness project for Valentine’s day!

They can make many of mended heart bookmarks, write encouraging messages on the back (or their favorite quotes) and leave all those bookmarks inside books when they return them to the school library! Spread love!

How to Make Mended Paper Hearts Valentine’s Day Cards and Bookmarks

Prepare in advance blank bookmark and cards cut from white construction paper.

Start by stacking 3 different colors of construction paper one on top of another. Use bookmark as a guide and draw freehand a heart small enough to fit inside. 

Repeat drawing process with a piece of white cardstock cut in card size. 

Cut the hearts, holding all three construction papers firmly. Our goal is to have 3 smaller and 3 bigger hearts, each in 3 different colors and exactly the same size. 

Hold bigger hearts together and cut them in 4 pieces. Cut smaller hearts in 3 pieces, making sure to hold all 3 pieces together firmly. 

Flip hearts on the other side to hide pencil (or marker) when gluing on white cardstock.

Arrange the broken hearts in such a way to have 3 different color pieces for each heart bookmark (smaller hearts).

When using bigger hearts, since we have cut 4 pieces, some of the pieces will be repeated so just try to make them as colorful as possible. These will be used for Valentine’s Day cards. 

Glue each of the mended hearts using a glue stick. Make sure to leave a bit of white cardstock visible between pieces. All three mended hearts should fit inside a bookmark.

Glue pieces to form a larger mended heart on the folded piece of white cardstock to create a Valentine’s Day card. Again, make sure to leave a bit of space between heart pieces.

And also make sure pieces align in such a way to form a heart. It’s easy to glue them a bit crooked.

Another option for Valentine’s Day card: instead of folded Valentine’s Day card where you write a message to a receiver inside the card, you can make a Valentine’s Day card with a message right on the front, like this “Love You to Pieces!” card.

Painted Heart Bookmarks

We have been pour painting fanatics lately in our home… and while sometimes we catch our paint onto a canvas, that isn’t always possible.

We decided we needed a creative painting idea to solve the problem of using the extra paint. Whether you are starting from scratch or cleaning up some unused paint you will be amazed at how beautiful and unique these press paint bookmarks are.

It’s a fun way to paint that even the youngest artists can enjoy!

Plus it’s a really fun Valentine’s Day art project.

How to create these fun non-candy Valentine’s Day gifts

Check out these simple step by step instructions for creating our painted heart bookmarks.  Then watch it all in action in the video below.

In our pictures, we are cleaning up after a fun pour painted love sign project. But, as I mentioned above you can easily start from scratch with this project like we did with our press painted snowflakes that you can see here!

We use the same DIY thickening agent in our paints to help stretch the paint a bit farther and to help keep the colors blending together too much. Make your thickening agent with 2 parts glue to 1 part water, then mix the glue mixture with your paint in a 1 to 1 ratio.

Using a craft stick drizzle, drip, or smear some paint down on a piece of parchment paper.

Use all the different colors and try to spread them close together.

If you are working with a very young child you might want to trace a box a bit larger than your bookmark to give them a place to aim. Then take your heart bookmarks and press them into the paint!

Use a toothpick to help pick it back up.

You can press the bookmark as many times as you want until you love the finished look.

Place them on a fresh piece of parchment paper to dry. Do not let them dry in the paint. They will stick! Once dry you can add a card with some ribbon or tape. These painted heart bookmarks make a great non-candy Valentines to pass out to friends & family!

Rainbow Bookmarks

As I have stated before, I am a self-proclaimed craft hoarder. So after finishing up our Rainbow Shamrocks, I had some paper scraps I just couldn’t throw out. Using a technique that I enjoy, V & I created these beautiful rainbow bookmarks.

This craft is not only toddler-friendly and easy to set up, but it gives you the perfect opportunity to talk to your little one about all the different colors of the rainbow!  It is fun to work on together, and with the tips below they are bound to end up with a great finished product!

Supplies for construction paper bookmarks:

• A sheet of construction paper. One of each color of the rainbow.
• A hole punch.
• Clear Contact Paper
• Tape
• Scissors
• A piece of white cardstock.

How to make bookmarks from construction paper scraps:

Start by cutting out a piece of contact paper. You want it 8 inches long and the length is one inch for every bookmark you want to make. I wanted 3 total so ours is 8″-3″.

Carefully peel off the backing and tape down to flat surface sticky side up. We like to do ours on the window. The light coming through during the project looks neat.

Fold the paper backing at the 2″ mark and start punching out Red dots for your kiddo. Let them cover the sticky space with dots. Once they are finished with the red dots. Peel the back down one more inch. Then add some orange dots in the new sticky spot.

Continue this process with Yellow, Green, Blue, and finally Purple. You should have an inch of unused contact paper at the bottom. Peel the rest of the backing off and press your cardstock onto the dots.

Remove from the window and press down well.

Use the backing to cut into inch-wide rainbow bookmarks!
