Do you have a pile of old t-shirts lying around your home? Some may be a bit faded. Others have been outgrown.

This craft takes those used shirts and recycles them into fantastic yarn.

You can use any color of shirt and various fabrics. In our tutorial, I took an old t-shirt of my teenage son and turned it into continuous t-shirt yarn.

You can use this upcycled craft in several ways.

• Create friendship bracelets
• Use it in a spooky web wreath.
• Make a colorful pen holder.
• Create a fun dog toy.
• Design a unique rag rug.

Tips for a successful ball of yarn

• T-shirts without vinyl are best. The texture can cause your yarn to be inconsistent.
• Experiment with different types of t-shirts. Softer versus stiff fabric will have varying results.
• Don’t worry about the side seams, you can cut right through them.
• If you are going to make a lot of yarn, you will want to invest in a quality rotary cutter.

How to Make T-Shirt Yarn

Upcycle an old t-shirt into t-shirt yarn! T-shirt yarn can be used for lots of fun crfts.

Materials

• T-Shirt

Tools

• Fabric Cutter - Scissors can be used.
• Sharp Scissors
• Cutting surface

Instructions

1. Start by placing your t-shirt down on a cutting mat. Cut a stright line along the bottom edge to remove the bottom hem of the shirt.
2. Start cutting 1" strips, but stop about .5" from the far side.
3. Continue to cut the 1" strips until you reach the armpit of the shirt. Then cut all the way through to remove the top of the shirt.
4. Arrange the shirt so the side of the shirt that remained attached is in front of you. You will have strips going to the left and to the right.
5. On the first strip, make a diagonal cut from just below the right strip to the top of the left strip.
6. Move to the next strip and cut, diagonally, from the bottom of the right side to the top of the left side.
7. Continue cutting between the strips to extend your strip of fabric.
8. Once you reach the top. The last cut should go from the strip on the right to the top.
9. Working in sections, pull the t-shirt yarn and release. This will cause it to coil a bit making it feel more like yarn.
10. Keep working in small sections until you reach the other end.
11. Then wrap it up like a ball of yarn and save it for your next t-shirt yarn craft!

I know, I know, I said that I was done with the Halloween crafts and posts, but I just can’t help myself! I am feeling extremely inspired this year and I have to share with you!

This cute spider web wreath is perfect for creating on your own but easy enough that the kiddos can help you.

Plus, you don’t have to break the bank by getting a bunch of supplies.

Your kids will love gathering the sticks needed to create this Halloween craft. Plus you can sneak in some fine motor skill building when they wrap the t-shirt yarn around them.

You can use this web craft for a variety of reasons beyond the front door.

• Hang it in your classroom or playroom.
• Be intentional about the number of times you wrap the yarn and you can use it as a counting activity.
• Let your kids play “house” with the spiders!
• Make a giant one and use it as a backdrop at a Halloween party.

This Halloween wreath is very simple. But here are some tips for making it even easier!

• The instructions call for t-shirt yarn, but you can use any yarn you have!
• Choose sticks that are the size you want your wreath to be. You’ll need 3 similar-sized sticks.
• Find smaller sticks to make smaller wreaths and larger ones for a fun statement piece.
• If you are crafting with a large group, try to make the sticks the same size, so the results are consistent.

This DIY Halloween wreath is perfect for hanging on your front door.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Materials

• 4 sticks. The 3 main sticks need to be the same size. (No longer than the width of your door.) The 4th stick can be smaller.
• A ball of t-shirt yarn made from one large white shirt (See how to make t-shirt yarn here).
• Plastic Spider

Tools

• Hot Glue Gun

Instructions

1. Start by using your hot glue to connect the 3 longer sticks together so they are visually pleasing to you.
2. Glue down your t-shirt yarn in the center of your web. Begin by wrapping it around the center a few times.
3. Next, start working your way out from the center. Wrap the yarn Over-Under-Over each stick working your way around the web.
4. Once you get to the outside, secure the end with a little more hot glue. Leave some extra string at the end for the spider to dangle from.  Attach your spider with more glue.
5. Take the 4th stick and break to fit along the top. Glue in place.  This stick will be used to hang your spider web wreath.
