Heart resist painting

The technique we use to create our heart art project is easy and fun for kids of all ages. The twist we mentioned entails using 2 different colors of oil pastels to draw hearts. Using white and black oil pastels create a completely different final result.

A heart art project created using black oil pastel looks amazingly similar to stain glass artwork!

Another change from standard watercolor resist painting where you use watercolors to paint directly on paper, we used washable markers and transfer the paint on paper.

You can use your finished heart art to create other Valentine’s Day crafts like Valentine’s Day cards, add them to a journal, turn them into a banner to hang around your home or classroom, or even frame them as an artwork!

How to Make a Heart Resist Painting with a Fun Twist

Start by drawing or doodling your heart design with black oil pastel on white construction paper (or watercolor paper). Use another piece of white paper to doodle and draw a different heart design with white oil pastel.

Cut out a piece of an aluminum foil, a bit larger than the prepared piece of white paper you used for drawing your heart design. Use washable markers to scribble directly on the foil. Pick a color combination you like the most, we decided to use pastel colors for our heart resist paintings.

After you are satisfied with watercolor marker scribbles, take a spray bottle filled with water and lightly spray water all over the foil.

Next step is pressing the paper with your heart design facing down on foil. Go over the white paper with your fingers and palm, making sure the complete surface is pressed onto the foil.

Lift the white paper and admire your heart artwork! Here you can see how lovely the heart resist painting looks with black oil markers, giving a stain glass effect. Leave aside to dry. And move onto a second heart design!

This time, change the design of your watercolor scribbles, we used a circular drawing. Repeat the process – apply water spray and press the white paper facing down, make sure to press it firmly.

It’s amazing and magical how the white heart pops once the color is applied! 

We have to warn you: this heart resist painting process is addictive and kids could end up making tons of different heart designs! Prepare enough white paper and foil pieces in advance!

Painted Heart Paper Craft

I think it’s safe to say that Valentine’s Day is right up there with Christmas in my daughter’s eyes.

I’m not sure if it’s the pinks and purples in all of our crafts or the hearts, but we start early and celebrate all the way through the 14th.

This lovely painted heart paper craft is proudly hanging in our home already this year. We hope you enjoy this fun Valentine’s Day craft too!

We used this technique once before to create Christmas trees. That was back when V was 3 years old! She enjoyed it just as much a year later.

How to create these easy homemade Valentines

Check out the step by step instructions for the painted heart paper craft.  Then see it all in action in the video below.

To get started print off both pages of your heart template. Protect your work surface with a piece of cardboard and have an adult use an Exacto knife to remove the rectangle shapes from your template.

Use a hole punch in each of the circles on the template, you can let the little ones help with this. 

Tape the plain heart down to your work surface.

Then place the cut template on top. Line up the heart shapes and secure with a few more pieces of tape.

As we mention in our painting with toddlers tips, you should tape down your paint pallet as well. Pick out a couple of paint colors and start dabbing with a foam brush!

When the painting is finished remove your top template and allow the bottom heart to dry.

Last, cut out the heart.

Now you’re done! Each heart will be unique and completely adorable!

Christmas Striped Stones

Are your little ones painting rocks yet? Maybe you’ve got the itch? These Christmas striped rocks remind me of Christmas candy and will look great hidden outside or placed around your home for the holidays.

Supplies for striped rock painting:

• Rocks.
• Paint. White & accent colors. We are going Christmas theme today so we went with red, green, & gold.
• Foam Brush.
• Skinny Tape.
• Scissors.
• Acrylic Sealer.

How to easily paint stripes on rocks:

Check out these quick step by step instructions to create Christmas striped stones and then see it in action in the video below:

Start by giving your rocks a nice thick white coat of paint.

You may want to do this before the little ones come to help so it can get nice and dry. Next, add your skinny tape.

Place them across the entire rock.

Then smooth down as best as you can. Add a light layer of white on top of the tape. This will help give the tape a better seal since the rock isn’t completely smooth. Let that dry. (You can speed this up with a blow dryer if you need).

 Now add your colors!

Again we are going the Christmas route, but you can take these any direction you want! Use more than one color on the rock or have it fade. It just depends on how much you feel like playing! Set the rocks aside to dry a bit. Then peel up your tape!

Your edges should look pretty good, but you can always go in with a few dabs of white paint if you need.

Make sure to seal them with a good acrylic sealer if you plan on placing them outside or giving them out as gifts.

Acrylic Poured Christmas Ornaments

We are so excited to share this fun technique with you! This is just the first of many fun pour painting for kids projects, also known as fluid painting, we will be creating.

Our technique keeps kids in mind.  We use a simple and inexpensive additive to the paint so that you use less and still get amazing results.

It’s messy, but fun and kids will love this fun process art technique.

Supplies for fluid painting:

• Acrylic Paints.
• White Glue.
• Water.
• Craft Sticks.
• Measuring Spoon.
• Wooden Ornaments.
• Drying Rack.
• Canvas. Optional, but a great way to use up your extra paint!
• Hemp. Or any kind of string.
• Small Cup for Pouring.
• Toothpicks.

How to create marble painting Christmas ornaments

Check out the step by step instructions for these poured Christmas ornaments and then watch it all in action in the video below.

Start by prepping your paint. The key to keeping the colors from all blending together is having a thickening agent.

They sell some of these at the store, but we have created one that will save you some money, and maybe a trip to the store.

Just mix 2 parts white glue with 1 part water. Then prepare your paints by mixing 1 part of your thickening agent to 1 part paint.

We created 6 ornaments and an 8×8 canvas all from 4T of paint.

Once your paints are mixed it’s time to stack them in your small cup (a medicine cup works great!).

Just go back and forth between paint colors.

Lay your ornaments on a drying rack, if you’re creating a canvas, slide it underneath to catch the paint.

Now pour the paint onto the ornaments!

When you have a good amount of paint on each ornament you can tilt the whole rack to spread the paint around until the whole ornament is covered.

Use the remaining paint on the canvas.

Tilt each direction until it is covered.

 Insert a toothpick into the hole of each ornament while they dry.

Tip: Use a craft stick to move the poured Christmas ornaments around a bit so they don’t get stuck to the rack.

Once the marbled ornaments are dry, remove the toothpicks and add string.

Painted Plastic Pumpkin

How To Create Your Painted Pumpkin Idea

This teal painted plastic pumpkin is one of those projects you have to see in motion. I will give you the quick step-by-step instructions, but the make sure to watch the video below!

Start off by painting a section of your pumpkin using your foam brush. Make sure to get down in the grooves!

Next, get your cloth damp, not soaked, and wipe off your pumpkin in a vertical motion.

Continue your way around the pumpkin, don’t forget the bottom!

Fidget Spinner Rainbows

Have your kids collected a few fidget spinners? They seem to sell them everywhere and unless your child needs one they are probably collecting dust or stuck in your couch cushions. I, however, refuse to just let them go to waste. We have used them to make fireworks and some fun watercolor art and today we are creating fun fidget spinner rainbows!

Supplies for your Fidget Spinner Art:

• A Fidget Spinner. One with a hole on the ends.
• One Pipe Cleaner.
• Paint.
• Pallete.
• Paper.

Creating your Hand Spinner Art

Thread your pipe cleaner through one of the ends of your fidget spinner. Pinch it off and twist it tight. Then twist loosely the rest of the way. Fold the end up to give yourself a handle. On your palette place a dab of each color right next to each other. Place your pipe cleaner in the paint.

Hold down your spinner securely with one finger and with the other swing the pipe cleaner back and forth to create your rainbow! The more times you do it the looser your pipe cleaner might become. We found after a few we had to press it down with our hands or adjust the pipe cleaner.

There is no perfect way to do it. You don’t even have to use rainbow colors… You can do half circles or full circles. Just Create!

Dot Painting on Rocks

The obsession with rocks is still in full swing. I have to admit, I enjoy painting on rocks just as much as my little ones.

I have always loved the amazing mandala style dotted rocks you spot all over Instagram and Etsy. However, my hand isn’t quite steady enough to create these with a brush.

I’m also too cheap to buy any fancy dotting tools. So I came up with my own solution for dot painting on rocks. It worked great and the kids were able to create some really fun rocks!

Stone Painting Supplies:

• Rocks.
• Paint.
• Pencils. One pencil per dot size.
• Pencil Sharpener.
• A Paint Pallet.
• A Damp Paper Towel.
• Clear Acrylic Spray.

How to create rock dot painting, the easy way…

Here are the rock dot painting tips. Then you can watch the process of dot painting on rocks in the video below.

Start by sharpening the eraser side of your pencil. You might have to tilt your pencil at an angle to get the smaller size.

You can create as many sized dots as you want. I went with a full eraser and two smaller sizes.

Then start your dot painting on rocks! Try to keep the pencil straight up and down to dab the paint and then dab the rock.

We did a few practice dots on our piece of paper first to see how each size would look. Wipe off your eraser between colors on a damp paper towel.

You could easily use this same technique to create a fun painting! Once you get the dotting down you can try a few of these fun ideas.

Like with a little patience you can stack your circles one inside the other. (Just allow dry time!)

You can create flowers too. The age and skill level of your child will determine how detailed they may create, but even my 4-year-old created a few rocks she was beaming over.

Space Rocks

There are so many great rock painting ideas out there, they are beautiful, but not always great for kids. We fell in love with these amazing galaxy painted rocks from Color Made Happy and wanted to simplify them for the younger kids. These space rocks were an excellent process art project. Each kid took to them a bit different. If your little one doesn’t like to get messy you might want to try out one of our other stone painting ideas.

Supplies for your outer space rocks:

• Rocks. We used these black rocks and some flat rocks for our own.
• Acrylic Paint.
• Old Toothbrushes. (or cheap new ones)
• Surface Cover.
• Clear Acrylic Spray.

How to create easy galaxy rocks:

Start by covering your work space. Choose your space colors.  Purples, blues, and even black if you don’t have black rocks. Set aside a silver or white to use at the end. Give the kids some toothbrushes and let them have fun! I showed both kids how to splatter the paint using the toothbrushes. V opted to paint her rocks using the brush, but the older boys got down and dirty with the splatter. Alternate colors and then grab your white or silver and add the stars.

These galaxy rocks turned out so cool! It was messy…so we opted to do this activity outside. Once the space rocks are dry, give them a few coats of clear coat.

Then they are ready to hide!

Firework Art Project

The fidget spinner craze hit hard. Fidget spinners could be found in every corner of our house. And then the kids got over them.

Sure they still hold their purpose, for the people they were intended to help. But the craze is over, and I’m still finding spinners in random places in my house.

Fidget spinner art is a great way to re-purpose your dusty collection of fidget spinners. You can combine a fidget spinner with string to create a beautiful rainbow, or you can take them outdoors and let your kids make an amazing firework art project!

Along with amazing food, and fireworks; doing arts and crafts is one of our favorite 4th of July family traditions. This project can even be done outdoors, while people are waiting for the real fireworks to begin!

Tips for making this fidget spinner art.

• This project can get messy! We recommend creating outdoors or in a space where the mess wont be an issue.
• Before you get started, make sure you use a fidget spinner that can easily be taken apart for cleaning.
• Show your child to aim for the outside of the spinner. The force created while spinning will pull the paint away from the center.
• Let your kids experiment with dripping the paint while it’s spinning or add paint and then spin. It is all about the process! There is no “right” or “wrong” way of doing this art project.

Materials

• A Fidget Spinner. One you can easily take apart to clean.
• Water Based Paints.
• Water.
• Paint Containers. One per color.
• Pipettes. If you don’t have these medicine droppers work well too.
• Paper. You can use thicker paper if you are planning on saving a couple, but we used printer paper for a few.

Instructions

1. Start by watering down your paint. This will help them drip and splatter!I did not measure this… It was about a 2:1 ratio paint/water. Make sure you are able to squirt the paint.
2. Set your spinner on your paper and play!Your child can start with the paint on the spinner, or add paint as it spins.

Painted Christmas Trees

I love unpacking all of our homemade ornaments and handmade Christmas cards every year. I get so nostalgic looking through past Christmas crafts because it helps me remember those little moments we shared.

• 1 piece of Green Cardstock.
• 1 piece of White Cardstock.

How to make paper Christmas tree art

Here is the step by step instructions for creating this painted Christmas tree art. You can also watch the quick video below!

 Start by drawing a large tree shape on the green paper. Using an X-Acto knife, cut out wavy lines on the white piece of paper.

Punch holes up and down each side of all of your wavy lines.

Next, tape your green sheet of paper down to the work surface. Then tape your white paper flush on top.

Grab your kiddo and some paint and let them go at it!

V covered the entire piece of white paper!! Once they are done remove the white sheet.

Allow to dry and then cut out your tree! V was very impressed with her painted paper Christmas trees. (Mama was too!)

Don’t forget to add the date to the back of your painted Christmas trees!
