This aluminum foil craft idea is perfect for kids to create and place on cards, posters, or wrapping paper. Decorate the foil to make it colorful and fun. Then fold it into simple flowers.

I received an email from another student’s parent at school, J’s teacher’s birthday was coming up. Since we were leaving I wasn’t going to go out and buy something for her, but I thought we could make a card with some ‘effort’ instead of just crayons and paper.

I had seen something on Instagram where a mom had let her daughter draw on foil with permanent markers. I was weary, permanent marker and kids can equal disaster. The effect it created was cool, was it worth the risk?

This aluminum craft idea is made by my 6-year-old son! You will see through the post that they shimmer and bounce the light so well. It is hard to capture the full effect of pictures, but they are beautiful!

Tips for making this foil art for kids.

Keep an eye on your kids. This project involves permanent markers. It’s worth it!
Make sure to give the markers a minute or two to dry completely before folding.
If, when you fold the squares into triangles, they don’t line up perfectly. Just trim the edges.
Remember that no two flowers are exactly the same.
Let your kids make a simple “vase” to keep the flowers in.

Foil flower craft for kids

Create beautiful foil flowers using permanent markers and aluminum foil. It's perfect for making cards or decorating a classroom.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Active Time 15 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

Aluminum Foil - Cut into 3"x3" squares
Permanent Markers
Quilling strips or thin strips of construction paper

Tools

Scissors
Glue

Instructions

Start by coloring the square with 2 different colors. One color will be the inside and one color with be the outside.
Fold the squares into triangles, keeping the colors on the outside. Trim away the edges if necessary.
Fold the triangle corners up. Then fold back the outside corners.
Add the quilling strip or strip of construction paper to make a stem.

Notes

We made 5 flowers to make the cards for J's teacher.

The flowers sit inside a foil vase on the front of her card.

We are so excited to share mended paper hearts with you! From broken hearts to colorful mended hearts in just a few minutes! Using the same process you can create 3 different Valentine’s Day crafts. Read on to see how we did it!

Mended Paper Hearts

There is something special when receiving handmade Valentine’s Day cards, you have to agree!

This mended paper hearts craft project is perfect to make with kids at home, to give to their favorite people. You can also use it as a quick and easy way to make classroom Valentines during art class!

We created 3 different versions using the same process:

mended heart bookmark
mended heart folded Valentine’s Day card
“Love You to Pieces” Valentine

Turn Mended Hearts into Bookmarks in a Kindness Project

Reminder: National Random Acts of Kindness Day is on February 17th and World Kindness Day is on November 13th each year.

Bookmarks can be gifted either to people in their lives who are avid readers or to their friends. Children can also turn this craft into a kindness project for Valentine’s day!

They can make many of mended heart bookmarks, write encouraging messages on the back (or their favorite quotes) and leave all those bookmarks inside books when they return them to the school library! Spread love!

Supplies for this Paper Hearts Craft

Construction Paper (any color you like!)
White Cardstock
Scissors
Glue Stick
Black Marker or Pencil

How to Make Mended Paper Hearts Valentine’s Day Cards and Bookmarks

Prepare in advance blank bookmark and cards cut from white construction paper.

Start by stacking 3 different colors of construction paper one on top of another. Use bookmark as a guide and draw freehand a heart small enough to fit inside.

Repeat drawing process with a piece of white cardstock cut in card size.

Cut the hearts, holding all three construction papers firmly. Our goal is to have 3 smaller and 3 bigger hearts, each in 3 different colors and exactly the same size.

Hold bigger hearts together and cut them in 4 pieces. Cut smaller hearts in 3 pieces, making sure to hold all 3 pieces together firmly.

Flip hearts on the other side to hide pencil (or marker) when gluing on white cardstock.

Arrange the broken hearts in such a way to have 3 different color pieces for each heart bookmark (smaller hearts).

When using bigger hearts, since we have cut 4 pieces, some of the pieces will be repeated so just try to make them as colorful as possible. These will be used for Valentine’s Day cards.

Glue each of the mended hearts using a glue stick. Make sure to leave a bit of white cardstock visible between pieces. All three mended hearts should fit inside a bookmark.

Glue pieces to form a larger mended heart on the folded piece of white cardstock to create a Valentine’s Day card. Again, make sure to leave a bit of space between heart pieces.

And also make sure pieces align in such a way to form a heart. It’s easy to glue them a bit crooked.

Another option for Valentine’s Day card: instead of folded Valentine’s Day card where you write a message to a receiver inside the card, you can make a Valentine’s Day card with a message right on the front, like this “Love You to Pieces!” card.

To make these beautiful St. Patrick’s Day cards we combined music and art. Kids will love revealing what their shamrocks look like at the end of this activity.

St. Patrick’s Day Cards

One of our favorite activities from our book, The Undeniable Power of Play, has to be Rhythm and Paint! We decided to turn it into some St Patrick’s Day crafts for kids by making it a fun Shamrock craft that we turned into St. Patrick’s day cards!

We love to paint in our house, but sometimes I don’t want to clean up all the mess that can be involved. This fun way to paint keeps the mess to a minimum!

Supplies for your Shamrock Craft:

A Container with Lid.
Non-Toxic Paint. Blue and Yellow.
Dry Beans.
Thick Paper. I used white cardstock.
Painters Tape.
Paper for your card. Printer paper or Construction paper works fine for this.`
Glue Stick.

Making your St Patrick’s Day Cards:

Check out the step by step instructions to create this musical shamrock craft. Then see how fun and easy they are to make in our video!

Cut out your shamrocks and tape them to the lid of your container. Add your beans, a squirt of blue paint, and a squirt of yellow paint. Secure your lid and start to shake! Have some musical fun and talk about what color your shamrock will be when you are done… do they know it will be green?

After shaking for a bit open your container and check out your shamrock.

Continue the process as many times as you want. Adding more paint if needed.

I just wrote out a simple message and let her glue the shamrocks in place. This shamrock craft was a perfect little afternoon activity!
