If you don’t have at least one fidget spinner in your home you can find one in nearly every kind of store these days. My kids have a few and I’m still looking around for more creative ways to use them. We have fun painting with our fidget spinners, but it is a bit messy so it can’t be done every day. These watercolor circles are a perfect way to use your fidget spinner in an art project.

Since my little girl is obsessed with creating flowers, she used the fidget spinners to create a fun flower shape, but you can use this technique to make any shape you want!

This project creates perfect circles, so it’s great for teaching about shapes!

Supplies for Watercolor Circles:

• Fidget Spinner. One with holes on the ends.
• Black Pen. I loved the look from the felt tip, but any will do.
• Watercolors. I use these liquid colors, they last for years!
• White Cardstock.
• Painters Tape. (optional)

Creating your fidget spinner art.

Place the spinner onto the paper. Press down on the center of the spinner and place the pen in one of the holes. Spin the pen back and forth creating a sketched circle effect. After making these a few more times we found a little roll of painter’s tape will secure your spinner. This way your little one can create these even more independently! Then move the spinner and repeat. Create any pattern or picture you want! I had to hold the center for my daughter (4), but my son (9) was able to hold it still while creating his circles.

Do what works best for you and the age of your child. Once you are happy with your creation it’s time to add a pop of color! Grab your watercolors and paint.

V created a pattern with one group of watercolor circles and then a flower with the others. I love how the felt pen bled a bit with the paint leaving some soft edges.

Every piece you do will be one of a kind. Fun process art for kids of all ages!

After some digging I found (I think) the original idea over on Skip to my Lou.  However, I wanted to get the whole family in on it… and of course, make it into a fun craft too. Getting your kids to find things they love about each other can sometimes be like pulling teeth, so this Valentine’s activity is aimed for them to see there is plenty. Our hearts tend to stay up far longer than I will admit, but you could easily add them to a key ring and save them to reference when your kids might be fighting.

What you need for your Watercolor Hearts:

• Watercolors. I love liquid watercolors. They are vibrant and last a long time.
• Paper. We used a large roll of paper, but any thicker paper will do.
• Paintbrush.
• Water (in a dish)
• White crayon.

Creating your Watercolor Hearts:

Place out your paper and draw all over it with your white crayon. Swirls, little hearts, etc. This really helps your little one paint the whole paper because they are finding the pictures. When you are done drawing your design set up your kiddo with their paint, water, and brush.  If you have younger kiddos, check out our tips for painting with toddlers. Only give them one or two colors per sheet of paper. We want pretty hearts, not brown ones. When they are done with one page give them another with different colors. Continue this until your child is “done” with it. I did this over the process of a couple of days. Let your paper dry then cut into hearts!

Valentine’s Activity for the Family:

Place all of your watercolor hearts in a bowl or on a plate accompanied by a marker and tape. Each morning everyone picks a heart to write something on for another member of the family. Like a conversation heart. Then have them place it on that family member’s door! We always start on February 1st so that we have two weeks of adding hearts. Every day as they go into their room they will see all of the nice things that their family members think of them. It is really quite endearing to see. We made some fun rosebud doily flowers earlier this year, but I didn’t think they would mail well. We had to come up with something new! So Spoiler Alert, Grandma…These are in the mail…They turned out so cute and from start to finish your kids can do most of the work!

What you need for your Mini Coffee Filter Flowers:

• Mini Coffee Filters
• Food coloring or liquid watercolors for more color options
• Water
• Medicine dropper
• Glue Stick
• Cardstock
• Green marker

Making your Mini Coffee Filter Flowers:

Create a stack of about 15 mini coffee filters. My box came in 4 sets of 15, so it worked out perfectly.
Place the coffee filters open side down and add a few drops of color to the top. Then start adding a few drops of water on top.  This will cause the colors to slowly bleed together and soak down through the stack.  Once the stack is completely saturated you can easily press it flat. Remove from plate and peel apart to dry.

Depending on your little one’s age you might need to assist in the folding of the flowers.  You can leave them totally open. Or fold them as shown below into smaller flowers.
Grab your glue stick and secure the folds.  Or you can even go one step further and create flower buds!
Let your child play around with the placement of their coffee filter flowers a bit. Then have them glue the flowers down. Give them a green marker to add stems and leaves.
