Pour Painted Shamrock

Since we have been pour painting on everything in sight, we were not going to pass up a fun chance to do something for St. Patrick’s Day! We decided to create a fun shamrock mobile to hang around for the holiday!

Supplies for these fun shamrock decorations

• Cardboard or Wooden Shamrocks.
• Acrylic Paints. Green, Gold, & White.
• Pouring Cups.
• Medicine Cup.
• Craft Sticks.
• Pouring Medium. Or create your own DIY medium using 2 parts white glue 1 part water.
• Parchment Paper.
• Hole Punch.
• Hemp.
• A Stick.

How to make a fun St Patrick’s Day Mobile

Check out these step by step instructions for creating a pour painted shamrock.  Then see it all in action in the video below!

Start by cutting out a few shamrocks from a thick piece of cardboard.

You will want this from a packing box, not a cereal box. Or you can just buy wooden shamrocks too! Prep your paints by mixing in at a 1:1 ratio of paint and pouring medium. Now start stacking your paints in your medicine cup. Go back and forth between the colors.

Then pour the stacked paint over your shamrocks!

Tilt them from side to side to get that paint moving.

You can drip them from one to another, give them a little nudge using a craft stick, or even do a second pour if you need!

When you are happy with your shamrocks place them on a piece of parchment paper to dry. Once they are dry, punch holes in the top of your shamrocks and secure to a stick with hemp.

Pour Painted Snowflake Decorations

We are having so much fun with our pour painting projects! Every single time we try this fun art project the kids get so excited, and the results are always beautiful!  These pour painted snowflake decorations can be hung around your house, made into ornaments, or used as gift tags!  Our process is simple and inexpensive, so you can make them for any reason!

Pour painting supplies:

• Acrylic Paints.
• Wooden Snowflakes. Make sure they do not have a glossy surface on them.
• Thickening Agent. We make our own using white glue and water, or you can buy some.
• Pouring Cups.
• Crafts Sticks.
• Cheap Cooling Rack.
• Parchment Paper.

How to create snowflake art

These step by step instructions will help you create your pour painted snowflake decorations.  Then you can watch the whole process in the video below.

Start by prepping your paints. Like I said above they make a lot of thickening agents for pour painting, but since our projects are for the kids, and on a smaller scale the “cells” that you see in a lot of YouTube videos aren’t really the goal so our DIY thickening agent works. Just mix 2 parts white glue to 1 part water to create the thickening agent. Then mix 1 part paint with 1 part thickening agent. This helps the paints flow and keeps them from blending together right away! Once all of your colors are prepared, start layering the paint in a cup. Pour a small amount of each of your colors into the cup.  Repeat the process as many times as you want until you have a cup full of colorful paint layers.

Then pour the paint all over the wooden snowflakes.  To catch some of the leftover paint, we like to slide something under the cooling rack.  In these pictures, we just added more snowflakes.  Check back soon to see what we created with these pour paint drippings.To get the paint to flow over all the edges you will need to tip the snowflake in all different directions. You can encourage it with a craft stick too. When the paint has spread to each edge, you can place the snowflake on parchment paper to dry.

When you look up close, the details in these pour painted snowflake decorations is quite amazing!

Poured Rocks

Have you seen the viral Facebook video where the woman creates these amazing works of art using a cup full of all different colors of paint?

Well if your first thought was, wow that’s cool, immediately followed by, but that would make a huge mess and cost so much money to do. Then you’re in luck!

Using a more cost-efficient thickening agent and a smaller surface to cover you can have a much more controlled project. We also have a way to use almost every drop of paint!

This tutorial uses Christmas colors to create beautiful holiday-themed poured rocks. But you can do this project with any color you want!

Supplies for pour painting on rocks

• Rocks. Ones with flat surfaces work best.
• Acrylic Paint.
• White Glue.
• Water.
• Measuring Spoon.
• Craft Sticks.
• Cheap Cooling Rack.
• Paint Cups. One per color and one for the thickening agent.
• A Small Cup. I used an old medicine cup. You can also buy cheap plastic shot glasses in bulk.
• A Canvas. This is optional, but if you are doing a few rocks this it will catch your drippings and make a wonderful piece of art!

How to create fluid art rocks for Christmas

Check out these step by step instructions for poured Christmas rocks, then watch the video to see it all in action.

Start by prepping your paints. You need to make a batch of the thickening agent. Do this by mixing 2 parts white glue to 1 part water. Mix it up well with a craft stick.

Then mix your paints. 1 part paint to 1 part thickening agent. I used 1T of paint and 1T of the thickening agent for 4 colors. This was enough to cover 4 rocks and the canvas.

The measuring doesn’t have to be perfect so the kids can definitely help with these steps.

Now it’s time to stack your paint! Start pouring the colors, one at a time, into a small cup.

Stack the colors back and forth until it’s near the top.

Set up the rocks on an inexpensive cooling rack. If you have a canvas, place it underneath the rack to catch the extra paint.

There are a few different ways to pour your paint. You can place your rock on top of your cup, and then flip the whole thing,

then raise the cup.

You can pour it out of the cup in different directions.

There is no right or wrong way to do create these poured Christmas rocks! It is so fun to watch the colors swirl around.

When you are done with your fluid art rocks, dump all your leftover paint into one of your bigger cups.

Pour over the top of your canvas tilting back and forth until the paint gets to the edges.

You can use your craft sticks to encourage it to the edge.

These pour painting projects were all dry within 12 hours! If you plan to hide the rocks make sure to spray them with a clear coat when you are done.

Acrylic Poured Christmas Ornaments

We are so excited to share this fun technique with you! This is just the first of many fun pour painting for kids projects, also known as fluid painting, we will be creating.

Our technique keeps kids in mind.  We use a simple and inexpensive additive to the paint so that you use less and still get amazing results.

It’s messy, but fun and kids will love this fun process art technique.

• White Glue.
• Water.
• Craft Sticks.
• Measuring Spoon.

• Small Cup for Pouring.
• Toothpicks.

How to create marble painting Christmas ornaments

Check out the step by step instructions for these poured Christmas ornaments and then watch it all in action in the video below.

Start by prepping your paint. The key to keeping the colors from all blending together is having a thickening agent.

They sell some of these at the store, but we have created one that will save you some money, and maybe a trip to the store.

Just mix 2 parts white glue with 1 part water. Then prepare your paints by mixing 1 part of your thickening agent to 1 part paint.

We created 6 ornaments and an 8×8 canvas all from 4T of paint.

Once your paints are mixed it’s time to stack them in your small cup (a medicine cup works great!).

Just go back and forth between paint colors.

Lay your ornaments on a drying rack, if you’re creating a canvas, slide it underneath to catch the paint.

Now pour the paint onto the ornaments!

When you have a good amount of paint on each ornament you can tilt the whole rack to spread the paint around until the whole ornament is covered.

Use the remaining paint on the canvas.

Tilt each direction until it is covered.

 Insert a toothpick into the hole of each ornament while they dry.

Tip: Use a craft stick to move the poured Christmas ornaments around a bit so they don’t get stuck to the rack.

Once the marbled ornaments are dry, remove the toothpicks and add string.
