Lego Chore Chart

It seems like we are constantly updating the way that we have J help around the house. As he gets older he is getting more responsibilities and we are trying to teach him good values with his money.

We have created a Lego chore chart to help us keep track of it all. Since it is interactive and Lego he is all about getting to his chores.

There are lots of reasons to make an interactive chore chart:

• They will be learning about adding money.
• They are learning responsibility
• You can set a savings goal
• It is fun!

So far it is keeping him motivated. He is doing his part around the house, which makes my life easier. He is learning money and how to save.

How to label the Lego Bricks

Each type of Lego has its own monetary value. As an example, here is how we labeled each type of brick. You can adjust based on your family’s needs and budget.

• 2×2 = $0.25
• 2×4 = $0.50
• 2×6 = $0.75
• 2×8 = $1.00

How to pay out your chore tracker

Keep in mind, while writing out your bricks, some of this money will go to savings… at least that is our setup.

I created enough bricks that my son could do them all in one week. However, that has yet to happen. These are the guidelines that we set up. Make what works for Your family! Then be consistent.

1. If we ask him to do something on a brick he must do it right away, or he will still need to do it, and won’t get a brick.
2. He doesn’t get paid until he has completed his whole jar of bricks. This would equal $13.
3. He has to deposit $5 into a savings account.

I decided that this year I was going to try my own attempt at a chore chart.  One that is designed for the youngens.  My kids are 2 and 3 and love helping me around the house.  Hubby and I decided that we would keep things simple.  They only had to complete 2 out of the 4 tasks in order to earn a bed-time show.

So I set off to make my super cute, pin worthy chore chart.  I was inspired by the chore chart the J used last year.  It’s cute.  Involved very few supplies.  And was made in very little time.

I basically drew a chore that represented each chore onto a piece of paper.  If drawing isn’t your strong suit, you could easily find some cute clip art and print some pictures.

 Then I glued the piece of paper to an old refrigerator magnet.  

I whipped these up, put them on the fridge, took my pictures for this post and waited for the kids to wake up and learn all about their new responsibilities.

Little Miss was very excited.  She quickly moved over “Brush Teeth” and “Breakfast dishes” into the Done section.

 Then she scurried to pick up all the toys in the house.  The pass out forks would have to wait until dinner time.  It was a success!

Then came Mr Monster.  He was also very excited about the new addition to the fridge.  But he was more excited about how he could so easily peal them apart…He still does his “chores”, but he could care less about moving a magnet.

The lesson of this story….Little ones will help you with chores whether or not there is a cute chart to go with it.  They just love helping.  To them they are not chores, they are times that they can be with mommy and daddy and feel appreciated.  And while Little Miss is still using her part of the chore chart (Mr Monster has had no interest since his original destruction).  She’s more excited about the idea of helping than the idea of moving a magnet.

Chore chart for a 6-year-old

Keeping a house clean with a busy family is a non-stop job. As a family, we strive to make sure that everyone does their part to keep the house in order.

Recently, we started playing around with the idea of an allowance for our 6-year-old. I want him to understand how to save up for the things he wants to buy and I want him to have to earn his money. Having him see what he was earning would be the key to him sticking with his chores.

I don’t want to have to remind him daily of what needed to be done. I came up with a simple magnet chore chart for a 6-year-old. It has a list of 3 types of chores to do.

A chore list for 6-year-old

1. Chores he has to do. These chores need to be done without being paid. He is part of the family and is responsible for his own space. In order for him to do the “money-making” chores, these 3 chores must be done first.  This was an important part for us. He needs to know that we all do our part around the house.
   1. Make his bed
   2. Putting his clothes away
   3. Keeping his room in order (things put away etc)
2. Chores he can do multiple times a week. These are chores that can be done almost every day around our house. He only gets a quarter for these, but he is learning that it all adds up!
   1. Putting away the dishes
   2. Toys (aka picking up after his baby sister)
   3. Take out trash
   4. Swiffer
3. Chores he can do once a week. The “big bucks” items. The chores on this list range between fifty cents and a dollar each. These are things I normally take care of around the house, he has to do it before I do. I will not wait around for him to get it done. This will teach him to take the initiative and not wait to be told to do it. If he wants the money he has to step up and earn it without being asked.
   1. Pick up the sticks in the yard
   2. Clean his bathroom
   3. Clean the floors (our house is All tile)
   4. Pick up the back patio

Tips for using this responsibility chart for a 6-year-old

• Every family has different needs and amounts they would like their children to do and earn. The amounts on our chore chart work for our family and our son. Feel free to chose amounts that work for your family.
• Chose chores that are appropriate for your child’s skill level. 
• We keep our responsibility chart on the refrigerator. Chose a place that your child will see often so that they continue to be motivated.
• Use different colors to signify different types of chores. This makes it easy for you and your child to quickly glance and make sure they have done their daily chores before moving onto the high dollar chores.
• You could also mix it up by having different colors for each child. Our chart is just for one child, but it can easily be broadened to include other members of your household.
• On payday, have your child add up their total. It’s a great way for them to learn about dollars and cents.
• Don’t forget to include a lesson on giving and saving. I have my kids put $1 every week into their giving jar, $1 into a piggy bank for saving, and the rest goes into their wallet or purse for spending. It’s easier for these skills to be built while they are 6 than when they are 26.

Magnetic Chore Chart

Print

Help your child learn about responsibility and managing money with this simple magnetic chore chart.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Active Time 15 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• Thick colored paper.
• Krazy Glue
• Thin magnets. I use old magnets I have around the house.

Tools

• Scissors
• Marker or Pe

Instructions

1. Cut out the paper into the size you want your magnets to be. If you want to go fancy, you can gut additional colors, a bit larger than the first set. Then glue a smaller color onto a larger color.
2. Write 1 chore, plus the chore amount, on each piece of paper. Create some labels too, like "To Do" and "Done"
3. Use the Krazy glue to attach a piece of the magnet to the paper.
4. Once the glue is dry, place the magnets onto your refrigerator under the To Do side.
5. When your child does a chore, he can move it to the Done side.
