Colorful Christmas Ornaments

String painting has been around for years! It is a classic craft that always creates beautiful pieces of art, no matter what the age of the artist is. Our rainbow string art was a fun twist we did a while back and today we are showing another new way to mix it up as we create colorful Christmas ornaments! This is more a fluid style of string painting and is sure to be a memorable art project!

Supplies for your string painting project:

• Wooden Ornament.
• Acrylic Paint.
• Water.
• Craft Sticks.
• Toothpicks.
• String.
• Parchment Paper.
• Cardboard.

How to paint with string:

Here are the step by step instructions to create these colorful Christmas ornaments. Once you’ve read these, see it all in action in the video below!

Prep your area by placing down a piece of cardboard and then parchment paper. Use toothpicks to hold the paper in place. Tape doesn’t stick well to the parchment paper. Next, remove the strings from the ornaments and spread them out on your workspace. Secure each ornament in place by adding a toothpick into the string hole. Now it’s time to paint! Cover each ornament in a watered down white acrylic paint. I used an old paint bottle to mix mine. Spread it to the edges using a craft stick. Cover your string in paint, place on your ornament, and pull the string back off.

Pulling in different ways creates different effects. Add more paint to your string and repeat! If you end up with a lot of white paint on your string than remove it before adding more color. Dunk and pull the paint around until you are happy with your piece. Move the ornaments to a fresh piece of parchment and allow to dry. Once they are dry, add a string and you’re done with your colorful Christmas ornaments!

Rainbow String Painting

Painting with string is a creative painting method that has been around since before we were born. I was skimming through a few of my Mother’s old art books and it was mentioned in almost all of them! (Not going to date our mom, but let’s just say it was pre-blogger days…).

I love a good process art project to do with the kids so we decided to give this one a try. I wanted to mix it up a bit, and since we have been on a rainbow crafts kick, it only seemed natural to do rainbow string painting.

Tips for thread painting success!

• Depending on the strength of the artist, you may want to grab a heavy book to help hold the paper in place as you pull the string.
• Encourage your child to experiment with pulling one end of the string, both ends of the string, or taking turns pulling a little from each side.
• This project makes a fantastic card for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, and more!
• The possibilities are endless because, when you do string pull painting, no two lines will be alike! When you are finished you can tape the top and bottom pieces together to see your amazing works of art!

Rainbow String Painting Tutorial

Print

Kids will love this process art project. They can experiment with the technique until they get the look they want.

Prep Time 10 minutes

Active Time 10 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Difficulty Easy

Materials

• String
• Paper. We recommend card stock.
• Paint. For every color of the rainbow

Tools

• A large surface to add your paint
• A heavy book (optional)

Instructions

1. Start by adding a bead of each color, onto your large surface, so they are touching and forming a line.
2. Lay your string across the paint and slightly twist so the paint covers all sides of the string.
3. Lay the string across a piece of paper so the ends hang off the edges. 
4. Place a second piece of paper (the same size if possible) on top.
5. Press down onto the paper as you pull the string back out.
6. Note: you can use a heavy book to help hold the paper down.
7. Remove the top paper to reveal the design.
8. Repeat until you are happy with the project.

Notes

Play around with where you place the string on the paper and how you pull the string off the paper. It's amazing all the different effects that can be created!
