How to make Christmas ornaments using sticks

Start by cutting or breaking your sticks. 

You will want to make them smaller and smaller to create a tree shape. 

Then cut your wet foam so your sticks hang over the edges a bit. 

If your paint is thicker thin it out will a little bit of water first. Then dip both sides of each stick and place back in the foam.

Tilt your paint a bit to get up the sides more if you need. 

Now over your paper bowl add glitter to both sides of your sticks. 

Make sure to do this when the paint is still a bit wet. 

Give your sticks plenty of time to dry. using hot glue assemble your tree. 

Add clear string for hanging with a bit of glue.

Your kids will LOVE creating these fun tree-shaped Christmas ornaments. From collecting the sticks to giving them as gifts.

Tea Light Ornaments

Christmas tree-shaped ornament

Start by trimming your pipe cleaners into 4-inch pieces. You can use 2-3 pipe cleaners depending on the final look you are going for. 

Using hot glue, attach the pipe cleaners around your tea light. Make sure not to go over the edge of the bottom. 

You can pinch the top to see how the tree will look.

Then attach a decorative ribbon around the outside. 

Place beads along each of the pipe cleaners. This is a great fine motor skill-building activity for your little ones.

Take and pinch together all of the pipe cleaners at the top of your tree. Give them a good twist. 

You can stop here if you plan to place them out for decoration. Or add on a clear string for hanging them on the tree. 

Make sure to flip the switch and watch the light shine through the beads.

Snowflake Ornaments

I have always been a fan of grabbing a bit of nature to craft with, but for some reason, we haven’t shared too many nature crafts with you yet!

These snowflake ornaments are a perfect way to bring nature to your Christmas crafting. The supplies are pretty easy, so they would be fun to create with one or ten kids!

How to make twig snowflake Christmas ornaments

Start by breaking your sticks into 3 equal pieces. You may want to score the stick first with a pair of scissors. 

Now take a piece of your foam and slice it into a smaller piece. This is very easy to do, but be careful. 

Press your sticks into the foam and make sure they are hanging over the edge on both sides. 

Next, you want to prep your paint. Use something small, like a medicine cup, to mix your paint. Add a bit of water to thin it out a bit. Thinner paint will help create a nice smooth dip. Make sure to mix it until it is all the same consistency. 

Now start dipping your sticks! Dip both sides and then place them back into the foam. 

As you work your way through your sticks you may have to turn your cup on its side to get farther up the stick. 

Time to add some glitter! Do this over a paper bowl or plate so you can save all the glitter that doesn’t stick. 

Don’t forget to flip over and do the backside! Note: the sticks should stay in place when you flip them, but you can put your fingers over them just in case! 

Set your sticks aside to dry.

Now assemble your snowflakes. I use hot glue to assemble my snowflake ornaments. Hot glue can be used with older kids and adult supervision. Just teach them to be careful. If your children are younger go ahead and assemble them for the child.

Start with a wide X shape. 

Then add the third stick to cut the X in half. 

Place them back in your foam while the glue sets. 

Last, add a dab of glue at the top of one of the sticks to attach the string.

I love how these twig ornaments sparkle on the Christmas tree.

Icicle Ornament

For these beautiful ornaments, you will have to take a deep breath and enjoy the holidays…because I use…glitter.

I don’t use it often, but for these icicle ornaments, I just had to. They really give them such a beautiful look.

How to use air-dry clay to make ornaments

Start by working a little bit of water into your air-dry clay. This will make it easier to work with.

Use a larger chunk of clay and slowly work it into an icicle shape.

Add water to smooth out any edges. Poke a hole for hanging and set aside to dry.

You will want to give it at least 24 hours of dry time. Depending on how humid it is where you live.

When they are completely dry it is time to paint. Start at the top with your blue and slowly add more and more water to it as you work your way down your icicle.

Once they are dry add a layer of Mod Podge to the tip and up the sides. Leave some areas near the top untouched so the blue shows through. 

Then holding your icicle over a bowl cover the bottom with glitter. By dumping over the bowl you should save quite a bit of mess and you can pour your glitter back when you are finished. 

Leave to dry. You can finish these off with a bit of clear acrylic spray. This will help keep most of the glitter on your icicle. 

Then add some clear string to hang them.

Angel Wine Cork Christmas Ornaments

How fun to add these beautiful singing angels to your tree decor this year! Perfect to make in batches and hand out to relatives too!

How to make an angel wine cork Christmas decoration

While some of our ornaments can be completed by kids alone, others will need some help or supervision from adults. This is one of them. Hot glue can burn so kids need to be extra careful.

Using hot glue attach the bead to the top of the cork. Make sure to do it at an angle where the mouth is tilted up. 

Next, make your wings and a halo. Use the bead to measure the circle for your halo. Twist and cut off most of the leftover pipe cleaner. Leave a bit behind to attach.

For the wings take a pipe cleaner and fold both outer ends to the center and twist. You can shape them after. 

Attach your halo in the same place you added the bead.

Next, add on a full pipe cleaner for your angel’s robe in the same place. 

Twist it around the cork until you reach the bottom. Attach on the backside with a bit of glue. Trim if necessary to have it end on the back.

Once you have shaped your wings you can add them on in the same place. 

Draw on eyes, and a nose if you like. 

Then you’re finished!

Air Dry Clay Christmas Ornaments

I have never worked with air dry clay before. But, there is always a first time for everything!

I have to admit. I’m hooked. The clay is versatile and it drys so light and airy. Perfect for making ornaments for Christmas.

• Cookie Cutter.

• Rolling Pin.  (a play dough one will do)
• Something to poke a hole.
• Paint.
• Paint Brush.

How to make unforgettable clay ornaments

First, you need to get your clay ready. Start by kneading in a little bit of water. I do this by getting my fingers wet and working it into the clay.

Once it feels nice and smooth place it down on your work surface. Put down parchment paper so your clay doesn’t stick.

Roll it out using something to help keep it even. I used 2 colored pencils. 

Then use your cookie cutter to make your shape. 

Use something, like a nail, to carefully poke a hanging hole.

Add a little bit of water so your surface is moldable and lay on your doily. 

Use your rolling pin to lightly add pressure to the top of your shape. 

It won’t leave a huge impression, but it will show up with the paint later. 

Place your ornaments in a safe place to dry completely overnight. 

Once dry pick a pretty color to paint your ornaments. Add it to your palate with a bit of water. You want the paint to be thin. 

Start brushing on your paint. Let it sink into all the design. 

Add a bit more water to your brush and swipe the top of your design. 

Add paint along the edges and let dry. 

Last, add a bit of string to hang them on your tree!

Mickey and Minnie Christmas Ornaments

While most of our Christmas ornaments crafts are aimed at younger kids we didn’t want to leave out the older ones.

So today’s tutorial is designed with the bigger kids in mind.

These Micky and Minnie Christmas ornaments are so fun to create and will look lovely on any Christmas tree!

Supplies for Disney bead ornaments:

• Glass Beads. Black, Red, & White.
• 20 Gauge Wire. I used red and black.
• Needle Nose Pliers with Wire Cutter.
• Large Bottle Cap. Size of Center Circle.
• Black Permanent Marker.

How to make Mickey ornaments

Start adding your beads to the belly side of your mouse. For Mickey, I did all red with 2 white patches (for his buttons) near the middle. For Minnie, I went red white red white for her dots. 

The best way to see how many beads you need is to use a large bottle cap. Wrap the wire to see how many beads will get you half way around your circle then finish with black beads on either side. 

Wrap around your cap again and twist off. Then twist again at the top of your wire to create a loop for hanging. Pinch tightly with your pliers and cut off any extra you might not need. 

Now to make your ears. Start by creating a loop at the end of the black wire. Add black beads until the size looks good compared to the bigger circle. 

Take the end of the wire through your loop and pull tight. 

Leave a gap with the loop for attaching to your main circle. 

Use the extra wire to wrap around your main circle and ear. Pull nice and tight each time around until it feels secure, 3 or 4 times around. Clip off the extra wire and pinch tight.

Touch up the wire with a permanent marker if you need it. Then you’re done!

Colorful Christmas Ornaments

String painting has been around for years! It is a classic craft that always creates beautiful pieces of art, no matter what the age of the artist is. Our rainbow string art was a fun twist we did a while back and today we are showing another new way to mix it up as we create colorful Christmas ornaments! This is more a fluid style of string painting and is sure to be a memorable art project!

Supplies for your string painting project:

• Wooden Ornament.
• Acrylic Paint.
• Water.
• Craft Sticks.
• Toothpicks.
• String.
• Parchment Paper.
• Cardboard.

How to paint with string:

Here are the step by step instructions to create these colorful Christmas ornaments. Once you’ve read these, see it all in action in the video below!

Prep your area by placing down a piece of cardboard and then parchment paper. Use toothpicks to hold the paper in place. Tape doesn’t stick well to the parchment paper. Next, remove the strings from the ornaments and spread them out on your workspace. Secure each ornament in place by adding a toothpick into the string hole. Now it’s time to paint! Cover each ornament in a watered down white acrylic paint. I used an old paint bottle to mix mine. Spread it to the edges using a craft stick. Cover your string in paint, place on your ornament, and pull the string back off.

Pulling in different ways creates different effects. Add more paint to your string and repeat! If you end up with a lot of white paint on your string than remove it before adding more color. Dunk and pull the paint around until you are happy with your piece. Move the ornaments to a fresh piece of parchment and allow to dry. Once they are dry, add a string and you’re done with your colorful Christmas ornaments!

Pour Painted Snowflake Decorations

We are having so much fun with our pour painting projects! Every single time we try this fun art project the kids get so excited, and the results are always beautiful!  These pour painted snowflake decorations can be hung around your house, made into ornaments, or used as gift tags!  Our process is simple and inexpensive, so you can make them for any reason!

Pour painting supplies:

• Acrylic Paints.
• Wooden Snowflakes. Make sure they do not have a glossy surface on them.
• Thickening Agent. We make our own using white glue and water, or you can buy some.
• Pouring Cups.
• Crafts Sticks.
• Cheap Cooling Rack.
• Parchment Paper.

How to create snowflake art

These step by step instructions will help you create your pour painted snowflake decorations.  Then you can watch the whole process in the video below.

Start by prepping your paints. Like I said above they make a lot of thickening agents for pour painting, but since our projects are for the kids, and on a smaller scale the “cells” that you see in a lot of YouTube videos aren’t really the goal so our DIY thickening agent works. Just mix 2 parts white glue to 1 part water to create the thickening agent. Then mix 1 part paint with 1 part thickening agent. This helps the paints flow and keeps them from blending together right away! Once all of your colors are prepared, start layering the paint in a cup. Pour a small amount of each of your colors into the cup.  Repeat the process as many times as you want until you have a cup full of colorful paint layers.

Then pour the paint all over the wooden snowflakes.  To catch some of the leftover paint, we like to slide something under the cooling rack.  In these pictures, we just added more snowflakes.  Check back soon to see what we created with these pour paint drippings.To get the paint to flow over all the edges you will need to tip the snowflake in all different directions. You can encourage it with a craft stick too. When the paint has spread to each edge, you can place the snowflake on parchment paper to dry.

When you look up close, the details in these pour painted snowflake decorations is quite amazing!

Paper Holiday Ornaments

Supplies to craft with our Christmas template:

• Template.
• Scissors.
• Glue Stick.
• Hole Punch.
• Decorative Materials:
  • Design One: Ribbon & White Glue.
  • Design Two: Yarn/String & White Glue.
  • Design 3: Tissue Paper.

How to create ornaments with paper:

Print off your templates and cut out a circle and shape for each craft. If you are creating the tissue paper ornament you will need to cut 2 template shapes that match. Use the guide in the middle of your selected shape to make a quick snip then cut out the rest. Once you have everything cut out, you’re ready to get started!

String Art Ornament:

Cover your circle with a layer of glue. Then start adding yarn or string until you cover the circle. Place to the side and allow to dry!

Ribbon Ornament:

Add a good amount of white glue onto the full circle side of your ornament. Then place your ribbons one line at a time until you cover the whole circle. Just like we did above with the yarn. It is OK for them to hang over the edges! Place to the side and let dry.

Tissue Paper Ornament:

For this ornament, you will need 2 matching shape templates. Both with the shape removed. Cut some tissue paper into thin strips. Use a glue stick around the edge of the shape. Add the tissue paper until the whole shape is covered. Allow the glue to dry.

Completing your holiday ornaments:

Attach the top half of your ornament, ink side down, with a glue stick or white glue. Then trim your edges. Next, punch a hole near the top. Last, add some yarn or string and your paper holiday ornaments are ready to hang on the tree! Don’t forget to add the date to the back!
