4th of July Deviled Eggs

The fun-crackled design of these eggs can be done for any holiday. But they remind me of fireworks, making them a fantastic 4th of July tradition.

Because you can’t have a BBQ or potluck without deviled eggs.

I love watching my kid’s little fingers peel the egg shells off.

We used an all-natural egg dye kit for this recipe. You can also use our tutorial for using foods to dye eggs.

Tips for making deviled eggs for the 4th of July

• We highly recommend using a natural food dye.
• These are perfect for any color scheme. You could even use them to teach about the colors of the rainbow!

Colorful Deviled Eggs

Use these colorful deviled eggs to make any BBQ festive. Try them in red, white, and blue for your Memorial day potluck!

Cook Time 10 minutes

Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

• 1 Dozen Hard Boiled Eggs
• 1 pkg of Natural Food Dye
• 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
• 1 teaspoon Yellow Mustard
• 1/4 teaspoon Salt
• Pinch of Sugar
• Paprika for garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the food dye according to the package directions.
2. Gently crack your eggs all around.
3. Place your cracked eggs into the food dye. I let mine sit for 5 minutes on either side.
4. After the eggs have dried, peel off all of the shells. Child participation is not required but encouraged.
5. You’re left with a fun-looking egg.
6. Cut each egg in half length-wise. When cutting your eggs, pay attention to the design. You want to cut your eggs so that the design is on the sides. This way, you can see the fun cracked look while the eggs are sitting on a plate.
7. Place the yolks into a bowl.
8. Add the mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
9. Carefully spoon the mixture back into the egg whites.
10. Sprinkle with paprika.

Natural Dyes for Eggs

I did a quick Pinterest search for Easter egg decorating using natural dyes.  I got a bunch of fantastic looking tutorials that included about 50 different vegetable dyes.  

Some were baked.  Some boiled.  All would be amazing.  But, I’m working with young children here.  I want easy.  As easy as those cheap boxes you can get at every store on the planet.

I think the part that makes all the other posts about natural dyes for eggs so difficult is they try to make every color.  I’m good with 3.  You know, the main three.  Red, Blue, and Yellow.  I wanted something with simple ingredients and minimal prep time.

Ingredients for Easter egg decorating with natural dyes:

• 2 cups of water
• 3/4 cups vinegar, divided
• 1 teaspoon beet powder
• 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
• 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• (hint, if you use organic ingredients you end up with organic Easter eggs! All the fun without all the chemicals!)

How to make your Natural Egg Dyes

Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water over the beat powder and mix until dissolved.  Next, pour the beat water into one of the glasses of vinegar.

Rinse out your measuring cup and repeat with the turmeric.  The turmeric doesn’t dissolve as well as the beet powder, but it still works really well.

Strain the blueberries into the measuring cup until you have a half-cup.  Add it to the last glass of vinegar.  You’ll get a fun little fizzle.

I know the blueberry looks red, but trust me, it makes blue.

The leading dye packs contain the following:

 

Sodium bicarbonate, maltodextrin, FD&C Yellow #5, cellulose gum, FD&C Blue #2, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red #40, FD&C Yellow #6, FD&C Red #3, magnesium stearate, zinc stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicon dioxide.

 

And now you’re thinking that you’re just dying the outside…but you’re not.

 

Let them enjoy the pink without worry.

 

 Plus, it’s so much fun to watch the blue eggs change as they dry.  And I loved the look on Little Miss’s face when she learned that when you put a yellow egg in the blue dye it turns green.

Easter egg decorating with natural dyes

Easily make naturally dyed Easter eggs!

Materials

• 2 cups water
• 3/4 cups vinegar, divided
• 1 teaspoon beet powder
• 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
• 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• (hint, if you use organic ingredients you end up with organic Easter eggs! All the fun without all the chemicals!)

Tools

• 3 glasses large enough to fit an egg into.
• Liquid measuring cup

Instructions

1. Begin boiling the water
2. While that is going, pour 1/4 cup vinegar into 3 glasses.  
3. In a liquid measuring cup, add the beet powder.  
4. Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water over the beat powder and mix until dissolved.
5. Next, pour the beat water into one of the glasses of vinegar.
6. Rinse out your measuring cup and repeat with the turmeric.  
7. Add the quarter cup blueberries to the remaining boiling water and return it to the stove. Cook until berries have burst.
8. Quickly stir in the baking soda and remove from heat.
9. Strain the blueberries into the measuring cup until you have a half cup.
10. Add it to the last glass of vinegar. You'll get a fun little fizzle.

Notes

The blueberries looks red, but trust me, it makes blue dye.
