Paper Easter Egg

My daughter loves to work with her scissors, so when we were writing Construction Paper Crafts for Kids we knew we wanted to have a few projects that really let them practice those scissor skills!

A favorite from the book, that can be remade in many different patterns, is our scissor practice heart! Today we are giving it a fun Easter twist and your little one will love it!

This paper Easter egg is a fun and simple craft that requires only a few simple supplies, so it’s perfect for a classroom, Easter party, or afternoon activity.

Supplies for scissor practice Easter eggs:

• Egg Template.
• Construction Paper.
• 2 Pieces Cardstock. White or Colored.
• Scissors.
• Glue Stick.

How to create paper strip eggs

Here are the step by step instructions to create a paper Easter egg. Then you can see them all in action in the video!

Print out an egg template and cut out the egg from the center. We will be using the outside of the egg so start by cutting the middle of the egg and move out to the edge. Your child might need help with this depending on their age. 

Next, start cutting strips!

These can be all different thicknesses. Use as many colors of construction paper as you like. This is a great way to use up scrap pieces of paper you might have lying around. Once you have a good pile of strips start attaching them with glue on the second piece of paper.

Cover as much of the surface as possible.

Add glue to the ink side of your egg cut out.

Then place it on top of your strips and press down. Trim the edges if needed and you’re done! 

If your little one is new to gluing remind them to press down their strips and egg well to make sure they get a good bond. Watch the whole thing created in our video!

Easter Rocks

We love a rock painting idea that kids, or rock painting beginners, can really enjoy creating. Using painter’s tape and a paint pen we are able to make these Easter rocks that even your youngest painters can help create!

Supplies for Easter Egg painted rocks:

• Rocks. (check out this amazing way to get rocks for super cheap!)
• Painters Tape.
• Paints.
• Paint Pen.
• Foam Brushes. (any brushes will do)
• Clear Acrylic Spray. Optional if you plan to keep them for a long period of time or hide them in the outdoors.

How to make this Easter rock painting idea

Using your painter’s tape, create a rough egg shape. You can use straight lines on the rock to create as good of a seal as possible. It does not have to be perfect!

We will round them out later. Next, let your little one paint the rock! They can do stripes, or dots, or just mush around some colors. As we mentioned in our painting with toddlers tips, for younger children give colors that can be completely blended and leave a pretty color behind. Brown eggs don’t really scream Easter…

Let the eggs dry a bit, then remove the tape. Make sure the paint is completely dry before the next step. If you are in a hurry, you can speed up this process with a hairdryer. Once dry, use a paint pen to outline your egg.

As you outline the edges, take the opportunity to make the shape a bit more egg-ish.

A thicker line can really fix a not so egg-shaped tape job. This was the one from the tape picture above.

See, now it looks like an egg!

If you are planning to hide your eggs outdoors, or keep them for years, spraying a clear sealer on them is suggested. Make 1, 2, or 20 and have an egg hunt this year!

Ombre Easter Egg Art

Finding new creative ways to paint with my little one is always a fun challenge for me. Sure there are plenty of times she just spreads around the paint, but this project really helps her see how you can mix paints to achieve different shades. Plus the finished product is perfect for the Easter season!

This ombre Easter egg art slowly mixes white with colors to create lighter and lighter shades. Your kids will love watching the colors change each time they add white.

Supplies for these painted paper eggs:

• Egg Template Printed on Cardstock.
• Paint. White and One color.
• Foam Brush.
• An Extra Sheet of Cardstock.
• Scissors.
• Craft Stick. Or something to mix your paints.
• Paint Pallet or Dish.

How to make this ombre art project for kids

Check out these quick step by step instructions to create your ombre Easter eggs. Then you can see it all in action in the video below!

Print our free Easter egg template here!

Start with white paint and add a little bit of your color. Stir the paint with your craft stick and explain to your child about how it is making a light shade of the color! Using your extra piece of cardstock, create a barrier to protect all but the top inch of your egg. Brush in an upward direction with your brush across the whole egg.

Add a bit more of the colored paint to the white and mix again.

Then move your cardstock down and repeat with a slightly darker stripe. If your child goes up and down with the brush this ok, but you might need to trim your top piece of cardstock in case any paint gets under.

Continue this all the way down your egg. You can do as many layers as you like. A stripe per years old is a good place to start.

When you get to the bottom you can put a dab of paint right from the bottle onto the foam brush. Allow your egg to dry then cut out!

You might have paint leftover and you can create multi-colored eggs with the same process! My daughter did this one too.

Natural Dyes for Eggs

I did a quick Pinterest search for Easter egg decorating using natural dyes.  I got a bunch of fantastic looking tutorials that included about 50 different vegetable dyes.  

Some were baked.  Some boiled.  All would be amazing.  But, I’m working with young children here.  I want easy.  As easy as those cheap boxes you can get at every store on the planet.

I think the part that makes all the other posts about natural dyes for eggs so difficult is they try to make every color.  I’m good with 3.  You know, the main three.  Red, Blue, and Yellow.  I wanted something with simple ingredients and minimal prep time.

Ingredients for Easter egg decorating with natural dyes:

• 2 cups of water
• 3/4 cups vinegar, divided
• 1 teaspoon beet powder
• 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
• 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• (hint, if you use organic ingredients you end up with organic Easter eggs! All the fun without all the chemicals!)

How to make your Natural Egg Dyes

Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water over the beat powder and mix until dissolved.  Next, pour the beat water into one of the glasses of vinegar.

Rinse out your measuring cup and repeat with the turmeric.  The turmeric doesn’t dissolve as well as the beet powder, but it still works really well.

Strain the blueberries into the measuring cup until you have a half-cup.  Add it to the last glass of vinegar.  You’ll get a fun little fizzle.

I know the blueberry looks red, but trust me, it makes blue.

Why you should use natural egg dyes

The leading dye packs contain the following:

 

Sodium bicarbonate, maltodextrin, FD&C Yellow #5, cellulose gum, FD&C Blue #2, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red #40, FD&C Yellow #6, FD&C Red #3, magnesium stearate, zinc stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicon dioxide.

 

And now you’re thinking that you’re just dying the outside…but you’re not.

 

Let them enjoy the pink without worry.

 

 Plus, it’s so much fun to watch the blue eggs change as they dry.  And I loved the look on Little Miss’s face when she learned that when you put a yellow egg in the blue dye it turns green.

 

I’m looking forward to next year when we can experiment with fun decorating ideas.

Easter egg decorating with natural dyes

Easily make naturally dyed Easter eggs!

Materials

• 2 cups water
• 3/4 cups vinegar, divided
• 1 teaspoon beet powder
• 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
• 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• (hint, if you use organic ingredients you end up with organic Easter eggs! All the fun without all the chemicals!)

Tools

• 3 glasses large enough to fit an egg into.
• Liquid measuring cup

Instructions

1. Begin boiling the water
2. While that is going, pour 1/4 cup vinegar into 3 glasses.  
3. In a liquid measuring cup, add the beet powder.  
4. Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water over the beat powder and mix until dissolved.
5. Next, pour the beat water into one of the glasses of vinegar.
6. Rinse out your measuring cup and repeat with the turmeric.  
7. Add the quarter cup blueberries to the remaining boiling water and return it to the stove. Cook until berries have burst.
8. Quickly stir in the baking soda and remove from heat.
9. Strain the blueberries into the measuring cup until you have a half cup.
10. Add it to the last glass of vinegar. You'll get a fun little fizzle.

Notes

The blueberries looks red, but trust me, it makes blue dye.
